Hobbit Films in 07?

TheOneRing.net is a dedicated fansite for Lord of the Rings, and it seems as though they may have scooped some major news regarding the prequel everyone has been waiting for since Return left theaters. A nameless tipster emailed the site, claiming to have just departed New Line's New York studios after "discussing upcoming projects" -- and while there, he or she got an eyeful of New Line's future schedule. (Either this tipster is a relatively important person or New Line just leaves these things laying around the office.) At any rate, the tipster claims to have seen The Hobbit "clearly marked on what looked like July 2007." So are we nearing the beginning for our next (and final) hobbit film? With Peter Jackson being such a busy fellow, is it fair to assume he's going to make time for a return to Middle Earth? And who gets to be Bilbo this time? Lots of unanswered questions, but perhaps we are on the verge of having a few of them answered. As always, take the anonymous tipster lightly until we get further confirmation, and stay tuned to Cinematical for more updates as they become available.

the hobbit is the best of the bunch. a book with lightness and fun, not overwraught and full of itself like the LOTR trilogy.
Ian Holm was perfect as Bilbo but how can he be in the Hobbit? Too old.
McKellen as gandalf is ok.
Probelm with Hobbit is that it portrays the dwaffs as much more comical and blundering buffons... how will an audience accept that after LOTR?
Ditto with Elves..
ah well :)

I demand to know the leaker!
I want proof! Though the series has kinda been ruined for me when I found out that Ian McKellen is gay. Makes alot of those scenes with the hobbits getting affectionate a wee bit awkward.
They're not using Ian Holm. That would not make sense unless they can make him look 25 years younger.

Well, the Ring keeps the wearer from aging substantially, so, the Bilbo we see at the beginings of The Fellowship would be relatively the same Bilbo as in the Hobbit. So, I suppose if Ian Holmes hasn't changed too much since then, it could work. Especially if he can be made to look like he was 50 because Bilbo actually started his adventures when he was 50-ish. I think it would be a good idea, if you were going to do The Hobbit, to do it with Ian. He's been there for so many things. He did the BBC radio version (which I have on CD) and Peter Jackson was a saint when he let Ian do Bilbo. I just don't know if Ian, himself, is available to do some of the rigorus stuff that a younger person would... Of course, that's what stunt men are for.
And, no. I am not a 40-something male, balding LotR Geek steriotypical. I am 17 female who has been raised on The Hobbit since infancy and has been a Tolkien Lover for always.

they can't do the hobbit with out some serious work. they messed it up by doing the easier--and cooler--way to film the others. it wouldn't work right and everything would be messed up. but i'll wait and see. i love the movies and if this one comes out i'll see it.

Holm would be perfect. He can be both serious and absolutely, astoundingly hilarious. And he's not too old. In the books, Bilbo was in his late-50s at start, and the ring preserved his looks. "You haven't aged a day" is a serious line delivered early on screen in Fellowship.
Sadly, he's not an American Icon (or whatever), so he probably won't be chosen for the lead -- but he damn well should be (I imagine Jackson MIGHT if he bailed on the Bomb movie and returned to the little guys).

What they ought to do is visit (make movies of) some of the stories in the silmarillion; there is the real background to LOTR; and just as compelling!!!

They could make a movie out of LOTR appendices - actually a few movies. There's a lot there that was hinted at but never developed, of course. some of the most fascinating stories of many Middle-Earth creatures - not just the hobbits- are in the appendices.
