Diseases of Centuries Past
Not content with rumors of romantic entanglement with Lindsay Lohan, Jared Leto managed to get gout while effectuating what all the sources are calling a "dramatic weight loss," from his fattified role in the movie about the killing of John Lennon, Chapter 27.
Gout is an incredibly painful form of arthritis where crystals (crystals?!) form inside a joint, and crunch up against each other everytime the joint is moved. This then causes further nastiness like swelling in the surrounding tissues and, probably, incredible grouchiness in the victim. Leto, frontman for the, um, totally awesome band 30 Seconds to Mars, is not the only important historical figure to suffer from the disease. He joins the ranks of other eminent men like Ben Franklin, Karl Marx, Benjamin Disraeli, Pablo Neruda and Alexander Hamilton in coping with his crystally joints.
To be fair, and to add context, Mr. Leto was quite excellent (and extremely skinny) in Requiem for a Dream. And we do actually quite love him in roles like his in American Psycho and Fight Club (where he was the "something beautiful" Ed Norton destroyed). But he will perpetually hold a little heart-throb place in my heart as Jordan Catalano.
Of course, he didn't look all that gouty last night, when he rolled up in a biodiesel powered army vehicle (all the bling of a hummer, with less environmental guilt) ...

Um, no one is saying Jared Leto is an "important historical figure", they're just listing off some people who had it in history to point out the fact that they're all OLD. DUH.

Hi. Author of the post, here. If I may refer 'Doesn't Matter' to 2 important definitions -
(1) http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=irony IRONY = the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning;
(2) http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=sarcasm
SARCASM = a sharply ironical taunt; sneering or cutting remark.
For clarification - 30 Seconds to Mars is anything BUT a totally awesome band.
Thank you for providing me the opportunity to get reacquainted with the two words. Your commentary is always appreciated.

Don't care about Jared, but will point out that while gout is normally associated with overweight men, even young people, men and women, can develop gout, which is a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joint - usually the big toe or your thumb. They describe it as shards of broken glass rubbing inside your joint, and I can attest that it is horribly painful but thankfully now easily curable. I developed it in my wrist and became convinced I had somehow broken it because the pain was so severe.

I don't particularly care about Jared Leto or 30 Seconds to Mars but this is a good opportunity to educate the uninformed about gout. Uric Acid builds up & forms crystals in joints. Tissue becomes inflamed, irritating nerve endings, causing extreme pain. Skin is likely to be red, shiny & dry. If crystals also accumulate in kidneys, may cause kidney failure, high blood pressure, stroke. Drink lots of water, avoid alcohol, don't take aspirin. See a Dr. for proper med's. Several people in my family have it & it's pain in the extreme.

That's a tough disease for such a young guy. Who, by the way, really is an excellent actor. Requiem is one of my all-time favorite films thanks to him.

My confusion comes in where all of you are taking more than two seconds out of your day to type something about a non- A-List actor who has the gout. Come on people, tighten up!!!!!!!!!!!

For #2. It clearly states "Leto, frontman for the, um, totally awesome band 30 Seconds to Mars, is not the only important historical figure to suffer from the disease." It says HE is not the only important historical figure to get gout. Can't you read?! No wonder SAT scores are so low.

Hello, again, Doesn't Matter. I am applying a highly clever ironical context to BOTH 'totally awesome' and 'historical figure.'
It has been approximately 10 years since my last SAT, btw.
And I'm telling you I would never kick Leto out of bed (unless, like, Daniel Craig told me to, or something). And I loved Leto in Requiem and as Jordan Catalano... I'm thinking I'm probably going to like him in the John Lennon movie, unless Linsay Lohan farts it all up with her Ann Margaret-styled coy-cuteness.

This is what the world has come to, instead of just enjoying the article for a few minutes out of a hard work day, and with all that is wrong in the world, i.e., plane crashes, 9-11, people being killed to protect our freedom wish this man back to good health and call it a day--stop the hatred!
Good luck to all your health (s)

What fascinates me is the fact that what I am sure are quasi-intelligent, human beings wasting their time in a heated debate over a human being who, in the grand scheme of things, is nothing more than a drop in the bucket of the gene pool. What makes it all the more entertaining is that it is based on sheer opinion. Who is really to say who is right and who is wrong?

Gout is indeed the build up of uric acid in the tissue of the joints caused from the consumption of too much broccoli or shrimp or the like. Foods that are good for your waistline are not always so good for you if you eat too much of them. It is quite painful but the swelling can be reduced with elevation and ice.
