An A-Team Movie Update
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Drama, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking
After sorting through a half-dozen writers (including one who never even watched the original TV show), a big-screen version of The A-Team is slowly taking shape. Series creator Stephen J. Cannell spoke with Empire and provided us A-Team fanatics with a brief update on the film, which probably will not arrive in theaters until at least 2008.
While Bruce Feristein was brought on to pen a draft back in 2004, he has since been replaced by an unnamed writer in the hopes that someone will finally get the damn thing right. Regarding plot, Cannell noted the film will be updated for the new millennium and may focus on recent conflicts in the Middle East. He says, ""I want to create it as taking place today. So the Gulf War could be a great angle. In the original, the A-Team were on the run after robbing a bank under orders just as the war ended. In this, maybe the four would raid Saddam Hussein's bank or whatever."
As far as cast goes, Cannell admitted he would like the original TV cast to play a role in the pic, whether that be behind the scenes or in some sort of brief cameo appearance. Also, he feels Bruce Willis would play a wonderful Hannibal ... and I totally agree. However, how in the world do you replace Mr. T as BA Baracus? Are there any actors out there worthy of taking on the role?

Well, obviously, the new BA Baracus should be Ving Rhames.

Usually I'm not a big fan of remakes, but this is one of those shows that had such a high concept it deserves an update.
There have been plenty of shows that did the "helping out the little guy" thing, but the "crack team of commandos" adds so much more. You get a charismatic leader, a handsome con artist, a crazy guy, and a intimidating muscle man with a heart of gold. How can you go wrong?
As for casting? I love the Bruce Willis idea. Grab any young, handsome, TV star trying to get a little screen time for Face, grab one of the also rans from the part of "The Joker" in the upcoming Dark Knight for Howling Mad Murdoch, and get your self a Pro Wrestler looking for a break in Hollywood (that would be any of them) to play the plane fearing, milk drinking, van driving heart of the show.

For B.A. why not Samuel L Jackson, what he lacks in muscle he makes up for with attitude....

Someone in the comments of the Empire thread mentioned Will Ferrel as Murdock. I like that. We could get the whole Frat pack involved. Vince Vaughn as Hannibal? Luke Wilson as Faceman? Artie Lang as B.A.? OK, maybe we would have to go outside the group for a good Mr. T replacement.

I love the Ving Rhames idea for BA Baracus. I also think the Rock would be a good choice. The man does know how to be funny and he's pretty good with the action stuff too.

I think Michael Clarke Duncan would be perfect, albeit a different style of BA. No one who takes on the role should try to mimic the voice or expressions. It would drag the film down.

I was hoping for Clooney as Hannibal.
He's got that smoothe arrogance thing.
For The Face Man, I'd go with Damon.
For Murdock, I'd go for Depp or Pitt.
BA? There is only T. Though The Rock was great in The Rundown.

Some great choices for hannibal. I'd love to see Jay Mohr as Murdock, personally, but he might be a bit too cheesey. In which case, it can only be David Cross. Face is easy - Andy Garcia, Benicio del Toro, or Billy Zane. And B.A. - While Mos Def could do it, and Ice T could possibly do it, I'd go with roger R. Cross, 24's Curtis. His funny-factor hasn't been adequately tested in roles to date, but I see a lot of potential. And if he can't/won't do it, get Carlos Bernard into a gym.

Come on! Who else but Mr. T could play BA Baracus? In my opinion, Mr. T owns that role. No one else could even come close to playing BA.

Djimon Honsou for BA. I've only seen him in serious roles, but he's a fantastic actor that could probably have a lot of fun with a role like that.

So, this is going to be a serious film, instead of the dumb comedy it was back in the day? If so, NO one should play BA--they should just throw out all the characters and replace them with new characters that fit structurally but will be different enough so we won't compare them only to be invariably disappointed. You know, like how the first Mission Impossible movie had no original characters in it except for Jim (and he turned out to be a bad guy--which invariably disappointed me).
I mean, come on, do we really want to see these characters replaced with unreasonable facsimiles? I don't and I never missed an episode of that big dumb show when it was first on.
Of course, the most important question is--what about Amy? To include or not to include?

The replacement character for BA should be M.A. Maracus, because an M.A. is better than a B.A.
Just as The Doctor always defeats The Master.
