Evangelion Relaunched as 4 Movie Franchise

Newtype (a Japanese publication) has announced a new version of Neon Genesis Evangelion in their October edition. The new Eva will come to us in the form of four cinematic movies, and will attempt to make the franchise "more comprehensible" to average viewers. Fans of Eva know just how tricky and, well, mind-bending the show was the first time around. Before you start screaming about some knucklehead altering your beloved show, you should know the following facts:- Hideaki Anno (the man behind Eva's original run) is writing for the films, and is the general supervisor for the entire project.
- Tsurumaki Kazuya (who directed the first episodes of Eva) will be directing all four films.
- Yoshiyuki Sadamoto and Ikuto Yamashita (who designed the characters and mechas for Eva) will be designing the characters and mecha for the four movies.
With these guys involved, I'd say the movies stand more than a fighting chance of being both a.) awesome and b.) very faithful to the feel of the original series. The first of the four films is due to hit Japanese theaters next summer, although we Americans will likely have to wait eons and settle for a pitiful DVD release.

1. It will be interesting to see how they pull this off. Being an actual student of the sephiroth I was fascinated by Eva when it first came out and became a huge fan. (even arranged a trip to Japan to see End of Evangelion before it was released stateside)
2. Does this mean the live action Eva is out? dear lord I hope so. That was just a train wreck waiting to happen.

"Eons"? Not in this day and age. And not with an animated franchise this big. Chances are, we'll see the film(s) within a year or two of them debuting in Japan. There will probably even be a limited theatrical release too before the DVD.
Of course, it all depends on who snags it.

Eons is certainly possible, maybe you weren't watching while we waited two years simply for the other two movies to get released plus two or three once Mange Ent. had the rights, never mind just how long it took to see 21'-24' arrive stateside.
To bad Gainax hasn't produced a show up to their old standards since FLCL, and most of it absolutely mediocre.

They were planning a live-action Evangelion? Ye gods. Here's hoping the movies turn out stellar, so that no one has a reason to revisit the series in the flesh.

Today, just a short time since it was out in Japan Full Metal Alchemist the movie came out. So It depends on fan demand and EVA has some big fan demand on it. Also don't forget Gainax had the great parody series Abenobashi.

I thought that this was being developed stateside... I remember seeing some concept sketches from WETA a while back. Eh, oh well. Am I alone in thinking the traditionally animated battle scenes can't be topped?
