Will Peter Jackson Direct The Hobbit?

In what seems like an effort to put the roar back into the lion, MGM chairman-CEO Harry Sloan is looking to turn the studio into a tentpole factory and is about to announce some of the big-budget films currently in development. Not surprisingly, since the studio is anchored by its library of franchise-available titles, most of these tentpoles will be sequels, including Terminator 4, a second installment to the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, the previously reported Pink Panther sequel, as well as a few that Erik mentioned last week.
One release to rule them all is The Hobbit, to which MGM co-owns the rights (with New Line, who made the Lord of the Rings films), and which actually may end up as two releases. There is a good chance the LOTR prequel will be a blockbuster no matter how it's produced, but Sloan is really hoping that Peter Jackson can be snagged to direct. Seeing as Jackson still has The Lovely Bones and The Dam Busters on his calendar, if he were to be interested in the project, Sloan will have to wait a few years to get it started. In the meantime, he can take another look through the library and find some more films in need of easily extended into sequels. Otherwise, he will have to find someone else ... someone that fans will trust and approve. Man, how long with that take?
Earlier this month, Mark reported on a New Line leak that claimed The Hobbit is scheduled for next summer, but the above information doesn't seem to make that possible.

If MGM is looking "to put the roar back into the lion", they'd go the smart (and obvious) way and ask Peter Jackson to direct The Hobbit - no matter how long it takes. After all, you only make a movie once (well, maybe not). Or should I say, you only make a blockbuster once?
Either way, 5 years from now, the world will have seen The Hobbit. The question is whether it will be remembered after that. Enter Peter Jackson and co...

It would be in EVERYONE'S best interest if they just leave the Hobbit on the back burner until Peter is ready to come back. And while they are at it, make sure they get Howard Shore for the score, both Ian Mckellen and Hugo Weaving to reprise their roles as Gandalf and Elrond, as well as Andy Serkis as Gollum. I don't think we need to secure Ian Holm, but his face would be a welcome addition, seeing as how Bilbo doesn't age until after he gives up the ring to Frodo.

I never thought that The Lord of the Rings could ever be made in the first place. Thanks to Peter Jackson, I was wrong!!! After reading these books once a year for over 25 years, you cannot have anyone else but Peter do The Hobbit! I am sure he would love another go at it.

I love the Lord of the Rings, Purchased all three. Can watch it over and over again. Brilliant movie. Please Make another one, where the characters whom had to leave on the ship can battle there way to be able to come back and stay. I just love it. Sad to see that it ended so soon. Please bring it back.

No one but Peter Jackson could make the Hobbit correctly or az well as he could. The movie Executives should wait for him to do it, or talk him into shelving his other projects, and do the Hobbit next.

I think it was a foregone conclusion to eventually do The Hobbitt. What I wonder about is how the screenwriting will stay as true to the tone of the book as the first three movies. Tolkien wrote the hobbitt for his children and the book has a very juvenile mentality for the most part, certainly the adult themes of LOTR are hardly there in force. I suspect the screenwriting will ignore the childish nature of the The Hobbitt and cater to adults.

I know I'm in the minority, but I didn't like everything Jackson did on LOTR. I felt that the hobbits were much too serious, and spent more time crying than the ever upbeat hobbits should. I also got the feeling that while he studied the story, Jackson didn't love the characters.
I for one wouldn't be heartbroken if another director were used for The Hobbit.

Of course Peter Jackson should do the Hobbit! He should tone down the scary aspects amplified in The LOTR trilogy and bring back as many of the fine actors as possible from the LOTR trilogy. For the Hobbit movie, I'd like to be amused, as in the beginning of Fellowship of the Ring. Also, you can never have enough of those elves and guys from Gondor!

I fell in love with Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy all over again when I experienced the characters under the direction of Peter Jackson. I was skeptical that it could be done, but he did a masterful job; the characters were well developed and I wept and laughed in turn during all three movies. And I eagerly awaited each one's release in the theater and then onto DVD. I think MGM would do well to wait until he is available to bring "The Hobbit" to the big screen. It would certainly bring the roar back, especially if Shore wrote the musical score and the actors who played the roles in the LOTR trilogy reprised them in this prequel; most notably, Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, Andy Serkis and Ian Holm as the lovable Bilbo Baggins. I'd wait in line to see it!

Peter didn't direct every scene of the LOTR series. He had other directors that he hand picked to help him, and he was the boss, and the movies are amazing. I don't care if he doesn't direct The Hobbit, as long as he's in charge, and THe Hobbit gets made with as many of the LOTR actors (the ones that are in The Hobbit, that is, and there are a few) as possible. I am dying to see Smaug on the big screen, picking his teeth with a sword of gold!

I have been a fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth stories since my mother gave me a copy of The Hobbit 28 years ago. I feel that Peter Jackson did a remarkable job of bringing LOTR to life. The trilogy is the crown jewel of my movie collection. While I'm happy to hear of plans for a Hobbit movie, I wish he would go back even further before LOTR and work his magic on The Silmarillion.

Yes, please wait for Peter Jackson to do The Hobbit. If you want it to be a believable prequel, you need to have some continuity, especially with the director and actors. I've been hoping Peter Jackson would break down and make The Hobbit ever since The Return of the King. The Lord of the Rings is the best fiction book I've ever read, and Peter Jackson did an exceptional job bringing it to the big screen. Please, leave The Hobbit in his capable hands! I'm willing to wait - in fact, I'd be glad to have it to look forward to!

I, too, have read LOTR every year since age 9. I was worried about the films, but Jackson did such a great job. I liked the fact that he said the Extended versions were for the Tolkien fans. I would like to see the Hobbit done properly, and it would be fantastic if Hugo and Ian were back. However, as to the comment that another LOTR film should be made, with a new plot, AGGGGGHH. No, no, no. NO.

OMG!! Finally what was talked about at The One Ring right from the begining may really come true! I'm getting on tinterhooks already with just the rumoring. And Michael's comment about the Silmrilian is a whopper of a hopeful also. The only sort of hicough I read over was getting Ian Holm to play Bilbo. Not that he wasn't brilliant in the role, but he is very gracefully aged now and it would seem to me to be a super trial of makeup to get him young looking enough. All this provided Peter still would want to do it.

I refuse to even look at The Hobbit unless Jackson is going to direct it. He did The Lord Of The Rings such perfect justice that there simply IS NO ONE ELSE that can take the job of The Hobbit. Perfection takes time and if they have to wait five years for Jackson to finish projects...FINE! ITS WORTH IT!!!!!!

I loved the LOTR movies. Having read all of the Hobbit books prior to the movies even being thought of being made, I thought that Peter Jackson did a remarkable job on the trilogy. I also believe that ONLY Peter Jackson can truly do The Hobbit, From Here and Back Again, justice. Please wait until he is available to give his full attention and remarkable talent to this wonderful story. Although Tolken did indeed write this story for his children, I believe that any adult will enjoy it as well just the way it is written. I, for one, read it for the first time as an adult and couldn't put it down. After my daughter reached 4 years old, I started reading it to her. I had to read at least one chapter every night until we finished it. Even at 4, she knew where we had left off each night. She also read the LOTR before the movies were released and was thrilled at how well Jackson stayed to the storyline. There were a few places where I had wished that he had brought out parts that he only skimmed over, but us true fans saw what most people didn't. Per se.....the campfire scene where the 3 trolls frozen in stone stood.....from where Bilbo and the dwarves had escaped them in the Hobbit.
Please wait until Peter Jackson is available. I know that I am certainly willing to wait for him.

When they were doing the LOTR. I had heard that Ian Mckellen agreed to play Gandalf under the condition that they would also do the Hobbit.
I could be wrong, but that will not be the first time.......

Can "The Hobbit" be made in a non-cartoon genre? I never thought so until I saw "Narnia". If they they can bring The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to the big screen, then why not the Hobbit. And Peter Jackson is the one to do it. But please do not wait until those of us in the older persuasion will not be around to see and enjoy it.

Yeah I get it, let's make another sequel. Why is it that all I see at the movies anymore are remakes and sequels. Has "Hollywood" lost it's creative edge? Or maybe it's not "Hollywood" maybe it is the money hungry Execs. that are making these mundane descisions. Whatever it is I'm tired of seeing these remakes and want to see something original. Maybe someone who has any influence in the process will see this and ponder how bland Hollywood has become. Show some courage and take a chance.

For the most part I thought Peter Jackson did a fine job. The one thing that disturbed me was that Sam never left Frodo's side in the books let alone being sent home by Frodo. I thought Sam saving Frodo from the orcs in Mordor with the help of wearing the ring himself was a very important event. I still give the Movies thumbs up and look forward to The Hobbit.
