Marvel Avengers Update

Marvel Comics has been making grand plans for their $700 million war chest, and news of new Marvel properties headed to the silver screen continues to grow. When rumors started becoming fact about movies such as Iron Man, Captain America, Ant-Man, Thor, a revamp of The Incredible Hulk, and possibly even a Black Panther movie, everyone familiar with the comics world said "hey, somebody is gearing up for a big ol' Avengers movie." And surprise, surprise, when Marvel announced their future slate, The Avengers was included in the plans. In a brief presentation to Wall Street analysts, Marvel confirmed their crossover plans. Essentially, what Marvel said boiled down to releasing several individual movies first to establish firm characters (and presumably get intro stories out of the way for everyone) and create familiarity with the non-Marvel crowd, and then following up with a big Avengers movie. All of the above mentioned heroes were Avengers at one point -- many of them originals. This sounds like a great way for Marvel to utilize one of their final tent-pole properties. What do you think?

Sounds like the only way one could do it. It will be pricey to have so many major characters, but at least with their individual origin stories and powers explained elsewhere and out of the way, it could work. The Avengers lack the outsider allure of the X-Men and don't have the same level of familial closeness, but I think the audience would be there. It has taken years to get audiences used to taking comic characters seriously, so if it's to be done 'twere well done quickly.
Having developed some knowledge and sophistication with the superhero universe, let's hope this paves the way for the more mature graphic novels like Watchmen, the Invisibles or Top Ten. I'd love to see a film version of Gaiman's run on 1602.

I wonder if this means that the introduction movies for the heroes they plan to use in Avengers will be the only solo movies for these characters or will they get their own franchises in addition to an Avengers franchise?
I figure they could use the solo franchises to focus more on harder edge stories (Cap being sent by Nick Fury and SHIELD to fight terrorists, Tony's alcoholism, etc..) and Avengers franchise to focus more on the superhero side of things. (Skrulls, Ultron, etc...)

After the "introductory" movies, the Avengers could assemble to capture the X-men, who no doubt are to blame (at least, in the eyes of the government) for the destruction of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. Now THERE's an epic!

I hope this means they can get a little more crossover action in the individual movies. Now that Marvel is controlling the franchise's in house its easier to do. Maybe not a full blown Avengers vs. X-Men, but at least an occasional guest flyby by the other characters.

It's a great idea - but all it needs is one of those individual movies to tank, and it could come crashing down.
But I'm looking forward to seeing how this goes.
