Monday Morning Poll: Who Should Play Kirk and Spock?
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels
Though we're still not sure which direction writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are going to take Star Trek XI, we're pretty sure the boys will go retro and focus on a young Kirk and Spock as they begin their training at the Starfleet Academy. While you Trek fans argued continuously over whether Kirk and Spock meeting at the Academy was even plausible in the first place, the names Matt Damon and Ben Affleck immediately began circling the rumor mill.
After the Damon buzz lingered for a few months, the man, his publicist and agency finally debunked the entire thing, saying something along the lines of, "we've never even heard of Star Trek -- is that some sort of eating utensil?" (Okay, that's not an exact quote, but it's close.) Forget about asking whether William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy will have any involvement -- those two flip-flop more than your local congressman. So, if Damon and Affleck will not be playing a young Kirk and Spock, who is? Ya know, if that's the route they're actually going.
So, I ask you: You're in charge of putting two actors in the roles of a young Kirk and Spock -- who do you cast?

My vote is for Shatner, Nimoy and the special effects crew behind the rejuvination of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan in X-Men:The Last Stand! Kirk would be no fun to see without Shatner sillyness.

I don't know about Kirk and Spock. Any actors you get will recieve universal Trekkie scorn for daring to portray these icons. Thing is, do you get actors that reinvent the characters and make them their own? Or do you get Kirk and Spock impersonators who look and act like Shatner and Nimoy?
As long as I don't hear "The ROCK as KIRK," I will be happy.
I will say that Mary Lynn Rajskub from "24" would make a great Yeoman Rand. LOL!

One other thought. Since it's J.J. Abrahms directing I'd expect he'd be more likely to pick actors he's worked with before on hiws TV shows.
So choosing actors based on that seems highly logical.
Terry O'Quinn (John Locke) as Scotty maybe?

My wife and I had this discussion recently. If Abrams is going the Starfleet Academy route, we decided Shane West for Kirk and Colin Hanks for Spock.

NO ONE. Not to get all "trekkie" on you but I think the idea of a "Star Trek: The Early Years" is a seriously bad idea. After so many years of truly crappy Trek, I'd really take no Trek over more bad Trek and anyone who thinks this will be good hasn't seen MI3 (which was ridiculous).
Let's be mature about this and let dead-and-buried franchises stay that way... Seriously--why even give them this kind of publicity????

Complete unknowns should play both parts.
Actors who not only resemble Spock and Kirk but can 'be' them. ie manorisms, voices.
There are millions of people in this world to choose from - why limit the candidates to the top 50 young actors in Hollywood?

rebooting the original trek is not the way to go. I wish they understood this.
Enterprise proved one thing to us, going back in time is only good for an episode, not a whole series or movie.
If this new film is supposed to go into the timeline already established by the original series you have a problem. A little small detail that KIRK AND SPOCK WERE NEVER IN THE ACADEMY TOGETHER

I just don't get it. How would time in the academy be more impressive than the 'real' world adventures Kirk and Spock had on the original TV series. And on top of that, this is going to be a new movie so how will an 'Enterprise House' movie compare to the likes of 'The Wrath of Kahn'.
This must be one of those funny remakes like 'Starsky and Hutch', so get Jerry Seinfeld and that Kramer guy for the roles!

One of the Nerd City writers wrote an article with his ideas for the cast about a week ago. (http://www.nerdcityusa.com/wordpress/?p=189)
He had Martin Starr (Bill from Freaks and Geeks) as Spock.

Grab Tim Allen as Kirk and Allen Rickman as Spock. Actually if your serious the only way to go is up and coming nobodies. . Why would a top 50 actor want to take a step down? They wouldn’t and there for it’s a fact that they would want to bring just one more attitude to the characters. Go with unknowns. The Trek franchise is your draw not actors in this case. Not preconceived notions. Look at how the Batman comic fans reacted to Micheal Keaton as Batman. He did a great job but everyone was ready to boycott it {not to mention life threats on Tim Burton} prior to it’s release.
