Singer Explains Khan Comment

In a give and take at San Diego's Comic Con, Bryan Singer spoke about a sequel to this summer's Superman Returns, suggesting he would get "all Wrath of Khan" on it. Geeks everywhere immediately loved the reference to the classic Trek film, and many presumed this meant Zod as a main villain. TODAY online, in a big old interview with Singer (which you can read in its entirety at the above link), asked what exactly he was suggesting with the quote back in July. Singer was a bit dodgy, as directors tend to rightfully be, refusing to admit details of Supes' next return. Instead, he simply pointed to traditional comic book movie wisdom, and said he meant the first movie had to be consumed with character introductions and relationships, the second movie -- like the old Wrath of Khan -- could jump right into the action. "Now you can raise the stakes, raise the jeopardy, and make a leaner, meaner movie."As one of those fans who was on the fence with Returns (I enjoyed it, but it was less than I hoped it would be), I am fully willing to give it a chance go should Singer put together another flick. He's right, of course, with the conventional wisdom he suggested, and a good director will learn from the complaints on his work. Your thoughts? Are we going to see Zod here, or what?

Although, Zod is a popular Supes' movie villain as well as on "Smallville" and in the comics, the best villain Superman could ever fight in a movie is the one that killed him in the comic books over a decade ago....Doomsday.

I have serious doubts about whether there's going to be a sequel, or that Singer will be allowed to direct it. The film was disappointing, both critically and financially, and while not a disaster of "Hulk"-like proportions*, I wouldn't be surprised if the studio wasn't rethinking their committment to any sequels.
* I should admit here that I, and maybe I alone, sort of liked Ang Lee's "Hulk" movie.

and I know this is beating a dead horse ... but I'm still never going to forgive Singer for ruining X-Men. as punishment he should never be allowed to touch comic films again (esp. one as bland and played out as Superman.) Harsh? please.

No, you're not alone. I also like Lee's Hulk AND I love Singer's Superman. Why do you think there won't be a sequel? It was still in the top 3 films of the summer wasn't it? (Da Vinci Code, Pirates and Superman)...

What is with Singer's (and fans) love of Superman 2? Been there done that. Forget ZOD. There is like 50 years of Superman comics and after 4 movies hollywood has to start recycling the enemies? We saw ZOD in Supes2 and he is now on Smallville, if there is a sequel to Returns, why not try something we haven't seen before!

I'd love to see the next villain in the sequel be either Doomsday, Brainiac or the best choice... Bizzaro Superman!

I have to respectfully disagree with the conventional wisdom here.
The Wrath of Khan analogy is fatally flawed and needs to be retired.

I hope they don't do a movie with Zod. If I wanted to see Zod, I can just watch Superman II. This should have been a reboot of the franchise rather than a reimagined continuation. Batman Begins did the right thing and was critically praised. There are many other Superman villains that WB can choose from... Metallo, Parasite, Doomsday, Bizarro, etc.
