Potter Crisis: Negotiatum Stallificatum!
Filed under: Action, Casting, Warner Brothers, Family Films, Comic/Superhero/Geek
There's a pretty interesting exclusive over at Newsweek: Emma Watson's not sure if she's on board for more Potter. While Potter five is finishing filming, Emma Watson -- best known as Hermione Granger -- has been publicly stating that she's ambivalent about signing on for the last two films. "I love to perform, but there are so many things I love doing ... Maybe that sounds ungrateful. I've been given such an amazing opportunity, but I'll just have to go with the flow." There's a question if this reflects legitimate burnout on Watson's part -- by the time the projected series is done, she'll be almost 20, and will have spent a significant percentage of her years on this planet playing Hermione -- or if it's just positioning and posturing for more cash for the next go-around. Plenty of franchises have re-cast mid-stream -- I'd love to hear a phone call between Watson and Crispin Glover, who notably got shoved out of the Back to the Future films -- but there's such an association between Potter's triumvirate and the films that it's almost insane to imagine the producers letting her go. Would you accept a different Hermione? Whom do you cast? Or should Warner Brothers skimp on catering and take the financial hit to get Watson back at any cost?

Pay the price! At this point, I could not imagine another filling her shoes. I would personally be sad to see it happen.

Pay up. The series has to be making them enough money to afford it, and Emma's the strongest actor of the three, IMO. I'd almost rather she be manipulating the studio for more money than seriously thinking about leaving acting...I've been hoping to see her in other films ever since PoA.

Last movie it was Rupert, this time it's Emma. It's just a bunch of talk. None of them are going anywhere.

Harry Potter sucks anywayz! Let her go, she'd be better off. They're all going to end up as faded out child actors on VH1's "Where are they now?" episodes.

I think it very funny that some "stars" don't want to do films that are part of a set. Never mind that financially, this will keep her afloat for years, but this is making her career. You don't hear any of the Lord of the Rings actors whining about it. How about the X Men actors? Sir Ian was in BOTH sets. Christopher Lee did LOTR and Star Wars. Are they whining? Think again, little girl.

Honestly, how old is she? How much money does she really need. I think she's a little young to be getting that selfish. I say replace her. Plus, if she really wants to go, then they should just let her go. If she keeps playing in Harry Potter, it's going to be very hard for her to find something else.

What! Harry Potter without Emma it will never happen
she'll finish the last 2 movies and then move on to other things, if not the next movies will bomb.
So many people have grown up watching the adventures of Ron, Harry and Hermione. no one will want to watch some other actress take her place.

I love Emma Watson in the role of Hermione! She is a wonderful gifted actress. I hope she'll continue in the role.
My husband and I started watching the Harry Potter movies because of our children but we are HOOKED and and can hardly wait for the next one to be released. We've also been reading the books. Since we saw the movies before reading the books, we are continuing that way. I guess my feeling is I want to be totally surprised when I see ea movie rather than knowing what is going to happen because I read the books.

They should definitely attempt to keep Ms. Watson for the part. On the other hand, they need to recast Dumbledore as the current actor overacts the part playing the unflappable character with too much energy and anger. Richard Harris played him perfectly...such a loss to the franchise. I would suggest Peter O'Toole in a heartbeat!!!!

Pay up. You can't change the cast now. I think of the three she's the best, followed by Rupert, then Daniel. WB is making so much money off these movies that they should be able to pay her whatever she wants. It was hard adjusting to a new Dumbledore but we had no choice in that matter.

Maybe shes afraid of being typecast into child star hell? We can't imagine another harry or hermione or anyone, we did manage with the new dumbledore though. What will these kids do when harrys over? could the public really look at them in a new role and not see their potter characters? Or major burnout, the have been at this non stop for years, just kids really. If emma has really just burned out, no amout of $$ is going to help her, it will only pay for therapy and re hab later! But we do like our Hermione just the way she is Emma, so hang around would ya?

I think that she should keep doing it. She'll only be 20, she's got roughly 60 more years on this planet to do other things. She should be thinking of her fans- no one can fill her shoes at this point. The only reason the recast of Dumbledore worked was because the actor died. Short of that, she should stick with it and be happy with her millions.

Changing to a new Dumbledore was necessary, but painful. Michael Gambon is absolutely horrenddous as Dumbledore, and I would hate to see more majic and chemistry lost with a departure of Emma Watson.

I agree and pay emma a better wage. the producers and studio are making hand over fist in cash on these movies. I also agree to make a change in dumbledores character I would suggest patrick stewart. he is a much better actor than gambon.

I will personally not see the last 2 movies if they replace Emma.
Would they have replaced Princess Leah in Star Wars?
What about that main Hobbit guy in LOTR?
Emma Watson as Hermione is easily as recognizable and appreciated as any actress in any frnachise, period!
Pay the girl, cheap bastartds!

Depends on how much she wants. It must be reasonably proportional with the author of the book, the director, and other major cast for starters. Otherwise, recast. Exhorbitant fees to stars - huge cash plus heafty gross participations - make many projects simply too risky and thus stifle creativity and damage the feature business. Movies are one of the few enterprises where the employees i.e. the performers have so much leverage you gotta start wondering who's working for who. The argument that a star is justly entitled to a huge percentage of the profits in a single moveie in which they perform is fallacious. While the system is changing, at this point, without the existing infrastructure the studios and theatre chains provide, major features would not exist. You need a huge capital investment to produce and distribute major motion pictures and a reasonable return on capital to induce investment. In truth, return on investment in feature production is on average, woeful compared with other businesses. The majority of movies loose money, tons of it. The handful of hits each year. like the Harry Potter movies, carry the dogs and keep the doors open.

Pay the girl... At this point she is the character. My 5 year old wouldn't be able to grasp the idea that Hermione all of a sudden looked totally different. I am sure more kids in the world would be the same way. I would hate to see her go.
