Downey Jr. to Play Iron Man!?

Wow, if this information is correct, then Paramount and Marvel have acquired a huge set of balls and are pinning the entire Iron Man franchise on -- wait for it -- Robert Downey Jr. According to AICN, some top secret scooper told Harry Knowles prior to a screening of The Fountain that Downey Jr. has landed the part of Tony Stark in Jon Favreu's upcoming Iron Man flick and, apparently, there could be a "huge trade break tomorrow."
While I'm not the biggest Iron Man fan, I'm totally pumped about this decision ... if it turns out to be true. Not only is Downey Jr. a wayyy better choice than Tom Cruise (one of the actors reportedly in the running), but the dude is just plain cool. He'll certainly bring the gritty edge needed for the role (what with all the time he's spent off set getting "healthy") and, besides all that, he's a terrific actor -- in my opinion, one of the best working in Hollywood at the present time. AICN feels pretty good about this lead, so I guess it's just a matter of hours before we find out the truth. So, Iron Man fans -- what say you?

Well he can certainly act the part of a man struggling to overcome his addictions...so I can buy it. Dunno, while he brings a gritty side to the character, I think he lacks the charisma that Stark always had in the comics. Kinda like Rhett Butler meets Donald Trump...without much Trump. But I like the idea...much better than Cruise...now I'm gonna have to imagine him with a slick mustache.

I wonder if he'll grow a mustashe or goatee? Maybe hit the booze really hard like in the comics unless they don't want to touch that in the movie which will be a disappointment.

Probably the ballsiest casting choice ever to come out of a comic film, maybe since Keaton as Batman. Downey Jr. is easily one of the most talented actors in hollywood today. Casting Downey in this film almost causes it to separate itself from the rest of these cliche comic films that have come out recently. I mean come on! Iron Man starring Tom Cruise, maybe i'll catch it when it plays on HBO, but Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr.......thats worth a trip to the theater.

Stupid just plain stupid. If this is the best they could come up with they should have stuck with Cruise.

This is perfect casting. As soon as I heard about it I could picture Downey, Jr. in Marvel's Civil War:

Not who I would have orignially cast, but neither was Michael Keaton for Batman. You are casting Tony Stark not Iron Man so he does have the chops for that. Just not sure if he's suave enough as a billionaire ladies man. (But I guess it's the billions they go for anyways.)

Anyone who thinks this was a bad choice is bat$#%! insane. I mean, to me it couldn't be a more perfect choice. I'd much rather have Downey play Stark than Cruise.

As an Iron Man fan with the long boxes to prove it, I like the idea. It seemed freaky when I first read it, but the man can act. I can see him pulling off the somewhat smarmy rich guy, and the sarcastic hero.
So far I think Marvel retaining control is really giving them the freedom to try some new stuff. I like it.

I completely agree with Chris. I too have long boxes full of Iron Man dating all the way back to the beginning and think this is a great casting choice. The more I think about it, the more excited I get to see the film.

Despite what everyone thinks I was excited about Cruise playing Stark, He can act. Now his public life turns me off, but when he is infront of a camera I don't mind shelling out $7. My only concern with Downey is the ability to play the womanizer that Stark is. I think any major studio is going to stay away from Cruise for awhile.

Worse decision ever
Robert Downey Jr. can't pull off the intellect or charm needed to play one of the smartest people on the planet who runs a billion-dollar company.
I went from looking forward to this movie to hoping it turns into vaporware. I couldnt think of anyone worse to play Tony Stark.
WTF was the director thinking? "Lets find someone with a drug addiction problem that is likely spend his paycheck on snorting more cocaine.. he'll have the insight to play an alchaholic. Everyone give me high-fives, I am sooo smart for thinking about this."

First of all Downey Jr. is good for gay or transvestite roles only. The iron man role requires someone with big balls, big brains and a style that is unique. This loser has none of these qualities. Period.

Hello, I would like to get Robert Downey Jr. email address so I can write to him about my Niece. I'm wondering if he can help out with her addiction or give us some ideas. We have tried many things and she's going the wrong direction.
Thank You and God Bless, Gail Merry Christmas!!! & a Happy Healthy New Year to Ya!!!
