Netscape Video: More Jesus Camp Controversy

Jesus Camp, a documentary about kids attending evangelical Christian camps made by filmmakers Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady (Boys of Baraka), has already weathered one controversy about whether or not it would play at Michael Moore's Moorefest. As we reported in July, Magnolia Pictures acquired the film and wanted to pull it from Moore's festival, fearing that screening it there would mark the film as a Liberal touchstone, but Moorefest denied the request to pull the film and showed it anyhow.
Now another controversy is brewing around the film: It's not playing to the evangelical market the way Magnolia had hoped. In this video, Netscape's Karina Longworth interviews the film's directors, explores the film and why evangelicals might be turning away from it. You can watch the film right here, or download it over on Netscape.

Quite interesting... But as all the religious topics, it is on the edge.

People are shocked by the idea of children being turned into little single-minded religious robots. But how is it any worse than sticking a kid in front of a TV until they turn into a fat little zombie? Or sending them to a school that doesn't bother teaching them a damn thing about history or science or anything else going on outside their own lives, so that they grow up utterly self-absorbed? It's not only the wacko Christians who encourage their kids to be narrow.
By the way, the kid in that video who gets an "icky" feeling in his soul from being around non-Christians? He's like anyone else - either he'll learn to accept other people for what they are or he won't. People who take the words of children seriously are idiots (even if those words are obviously reflecting the sentiments of adults).

That's a joke, right?
Because if it's not, you're some kind of idiot.
While there are definite comparisons to make, and both are frightening, to say these are more out there than those... well, it makes you an idiot.

any ridiculous montheistic faith invites crazies - you have to reject science and good sense just to buy the premise! amongst a collection of crazies, there are of course SUPER CRAZIES, who will make the religion of their choice even more dangerous than it already was - for muslims, it's al-quaeda; for christians, it's evangelicals. considering the huge footprint of christianity (evangelical and otherwise) *within* the united states, i fail to see why they are not regarded as a terrorist organisation. i'm much, much more afraid of christians than i am of muslims, or any other wacky religion.

Ok, here we go with the Christian bashing. It's amazing how many people can speak so much on a subect they know nothing about. Instead of learning what Christianity is all about, they find it much easier to express bigotry towards Christians and compare them to Muslim terrorists. "She" calls them hate mongers. I think "She" is the biggest hate monger of them all for making such a remark. People who call Christians hate mongers are hate mongers themselves--especially since if these bigots knew anything about Christianity, they would know that it's about expressing God's love, not hatred towards people. I love how people who condemn Mel Gibson for his anti-semetic remarks he said while drunk (and rightly so) are the same people who find it acceptable to express bigotry towards Christians while sober. How is calling Christians fascists, hate mongers, or wackos any different from making anti-semetic remarks? Please educate yourselves on what Christianity is truly about before expressing your prejudice towards Christians.
