Rothman on Galactus
Filed under: Action, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
With all the talk I've done lately about the Silver Surfer entering the Fantastic Four film universe, I've almost overlooked the man -- er, devourer of worlds -- who employs him. As all True Believers know, when the Surfer first encounters the Fantastic Four, it's as the Herald of Galactus. Galactus, of course, is an extremely important villain in the Marvel universe, particularly as he relates to the Four, and his entry onto the silver screen should be a very large event.
Fox Chairman Tom Rothman recently discussed the challenge of translating such an enormous being from comic book to cinema with IESB, and had this to say: "I think that Galactus, look, I don't want to give away too much, right, but I will say this, Galactus will appear and fans will not be disappointed." He also refused to confirm or deny any Puppet Master related rumors, and further promised a very "traditional" looking Surfer. He even hinted at the possibility of a Silver Surfer solo flick if the character goes over well in his Fantastic introduction. All of this sounds very, very exciting to this little geek. How about you?

On paper it certainly sounds great to have the FF encountering the Silver Surfer as herald to Galactus. Even though some cast/crew have said they are doing this film differently, I still don't have faith that the director "gets it" enough to do things a whole lot differently than in the last film.
I certainly hope I'm wrong, because like many others, I am a big fan of the Surfer and would love to see him done the right way on the big screen.

As far as I'm concerned, I could care less what Tom Rothman has to say about anything. The man is an idiot and I would rather he sit in his spoofy leather chair in his big office and do nothing but crossword puzzles. He ruined many promising franchises (ahem, X-men and Aliens) and he will turn others to shit as well. I mean come on...it wouldn't surprise me if this idiot was the one who pushed for the next Alien vs. Predator movie to take place in Texas...way to go.

i've got questions, and maybe y'all can answer them. if this is the wrong type of question for this site, i apologize. how the hell can the FF handle galactus? honestly, i don't think they have the right combination of powers or the strength to defeat someone who eats worlds. maybe the x-men could do it, if pheonix worked with them. if anyone that can answer that, i would be most appreciative.

In the Marvel Comics Universe, Galactus is not really “defeated,” but rather he is driven from Earth by the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer (with the help of the Watcher Uatu) by their acquisition of the Ultimate Nullifier, a fictional item of immense power.
So basically, the best way for the FF to beat a mega-character such as Galactus in a movie environment would be to follow the same storyline. By threat of his destruction. Because to do any actual harm to Galactus (again according to the Marvel Universe) would cause the destruction of the universe because Galactus makes up one leg of the triad of existence (along with Eternity and Death).
Now my thoughts on this...if Rothman has faith in his own movie interpretation of Galactus, then I’m afraid I’m already disappointed. The first FF was okay, but far from spectacular. His excitement in his own handiwork will be his downfall. As a Silver Surfer fan, I am excited for this cinematic installment of the Marvel Universe. But if the portray of the SS or Galactus isn’t done correctly, this flick could totally blow donkeys...
