Disney Insider: Orlando Bloom Won't Survive Pirates 4

Orlando Bloom's character in the now-juggernaut Pirates of the Caribbean series will not survive through the inevitable fourth installment -- so says a Disney insider who spoke to the British paper Daily Star. According to the source, the script for the fourth film is currently being written, and Disney bean counters are already examining ways to cut its massive costs. They have concluded that although both Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley are essential to the continued success of the series, Orlando's character is human NyQuil and "not necessary" to maintain the gravy train (I could have told them that). Whether or not he will be killed in the third movie, due next summer, or be bumped off early in the fourth is not specified.
The report also states that the films' minor characters, who were faithfully brought back for the first sequel, are also on the chopping block. Given that both Kingdom of Heaven and Elizabethtown -- the only films you could credibly call "Bloom vehicles" -- underperformed at the box office, this report sounds credible to me. There's almost certainly a parity clause in Bloom's contract that assures him a salary in the same league as the other two leads, which will make him cost-prohibitive the longer the series goes on.
I enjoyed the first Pirates film, but thought the second one stunk of doubloons. I doubt I'll be standing in line for the third, let alone the fourth.

Amen- but then again would Depp still look like Han Solo without the geeky Luke Skywalker Bloom brings(barely) to the table?

This is almost certainly nonsense. Terry Rossio has stated very recently on the message board he runs with Ted Elliot that they haven't given any thought to a fourth Pirates movie at all.
So the claim that "The script for the fourth Pirates movie is being worked on" can only be true if Disney has hired different writers for it without telling Ted and Terry. And the likelihood of that is very close to zero indeed.

Totally agree with Elrond. Bloom's Luke is needed but then I don't Pirates to become High Seas Jedi. I loved the second movie, way more fun than the first one and darker too. I hope to see more of the safe in number 3. Not sure they should even make a fourth.

It seems highly doubtful that Orlando would be killed off in one of the movies... he is, afterall, one of the main characters... probably more so, if not equally, than Kiera Knightly. What plot for a fourth movie would exist if Orlando was killed off? I also think three movies would be find, why would there be need of a fourth?

The fourth in a series of movies based on a amusement park ride: is hollywood so devoid of original ideas?

Your logic is impeccable, but be warned - the Daily Star is pretty much the bottom of the barrel for UK newspapers. It wouldn't be the first time they've just made stuff up, especially concerning film news.
And I agree with you. Pirates 1 was fab, but the sequel was horrid. Johnny Depp's character turned from dashing to camp, and not in a good way.

I like the Character of Will Turner and find Elixabeth Swann to be very annoying personally. So IF the rumors are true and they make a 4th film without Bloom's character I won't be going to the theaters to see it. I'm a Depp fan though so I'd probably buy the dvd. It will be interesting to see what Disney does if they even do anything.

I doubt any of this is true.
For budget cuts? Yeah right. For as much money as DMC racked in in just a few weeks, i wouldnt be supprised if they were willing to give them a budget of 500 million. Its the 3rd biggest movie in the entire world. So budget cuts? Dont believe it. None of this is true.

An "Disney insider" says something to the Daily Star? Wow. I hope you're just observing, because if you actually believe this, you're almost impressively gulible. I highly doubt there's even a 4th film, much less that they'd kill off the character this series focuses nearly a third of its attention on. If you don't like Bloom, fine, but if you don't think he matters to the series, then I'm suprised you even liked the first film of the franchise, as you obviously don't connect with all its elements.

They should have killed Bloom's character in the first movie. The guy cannot act for toffee, he is the male equivalent of Jessica Alba. If the moviegoing public has any luck at all, Pirates 3 will be the last movie he makes.

I can see how they can cut his character, easy enough to transition Ms. Swan to Sparrow as the love interest, but cutting Bloom might be bad for the movie because it wasn't just Bloom who had bad lines, but everyone in the second one. Actually I thought as Turner as the bigger BA in this movie then Sparrow, who seemed only to be running away the entire time.

Kill Will Turner? Are the execs at Disney mad??
First they think they can add Pirateland before the POTC3 premiere only 8 months away. Now they think they can kill off an important character?
The reason given that the bean counters want to cut costs makes no sense. The movie made one billion plus in ticket sales. They can't spare a few million for Mr. Bloom?
I suspect different motives. Mr. Bloom may be asking too much script-wise. Personality conflicts may have emerged. Odd that the announcement comes after OB's appearance on Extras that made fun of Depp. Also, odd that the story appears as Bloom has jetted off to the U.K. and France.
This announcement may only be a ploy to bring the young actor into line. No matter.
Directors know what the young actor can do and will give him roles as appropriate. He wants to do smaller films or theater and needs a rest after years of steady work.
I'm fascinated to see how this all sorts out.

Interesting how the most vociferous supporters of OB are female. I too thought PotC-2 was offal, and I will not contribute to the opening day receipts for PotC-3.
Sam Greyling brought up an interesting addition with Jessica Alba. For PotC-4 have Knightley and Depp go off together, leaving a jealous Bloom to hook-up with pirate "hottie" Alba. The two couples then engage in a race to the treasure competition, with plenty of "Indiana Jones"-like traps around the treasure. They end up working together, opening up the treasure box and sharing the loot: the DVD profits from the mega-deluxe collector's edition PotC 4 film set.

I'm male. And well as much as I can recognize that Bloom is not an A+ actor, he still brings a sense of fun as Will Turner that I can't really sense in Knightley's Elizabeth. Plus his chemistry with Depp is that much more believable than what Depp has with Knightley. Just my opinion, obviously.

It sounds like those Disney bean counters are going to whittle this supposed 4th installment down to worthlessness...
Considering this is the only film from Disney in recent years to be profitable that will not be received well...

For one, his character is needed. It balances Depp's character. Less screen time for Depp makes him better, honestly, which is part of the reason the first was stronger than the second.
Getting rid of smaller characters would be worse, though, as they're part of what made the movie rise above the rest.

I believe Will Turner is an important character. If they want to kill off someone why not Elizabeth. That character isn't an important one at all. I didn't even notice her in the first or the second. It was Jack and Will that I noticed. Those two make a good team. Honestly, though they're all expendable, even Jack. A so called fourth film could easily be made in such a way that Jack dies and that pushes Will's character into piracy. Hopefully, this is just rubbish and no one is cut, even so called minor characters. They're important too.

The Pirates film series is admirably done,
however, some of the 'emaciated imagery' could
be too frightening not only for young children.
I sincerely wish that the PIRATES film series
doesn't support or defend deportation as in the name of someone called ARAR because that is the onomatopoeic sound that a PIRATE CAN DISPLAY BY VOICE, or any other falsed politically motivated functioned moves of persons to where
they don't want to be sent.
And there are some real mobsters who think it is
funnny to bark upon law enforcement with a
ridiculing 'AR-AR' REMARK before they run away.
They use invasive radios NOT ALUMINUM WRAP
MARTIAN ANTENNAS!

What a crock! No matter who is your favorite, the combination of the main actors in POTC, is what helped make the 1st 2 movies a huge success. This movie is just plain fun. To delete any of the 4 main characters would be really stupid and I think would really hurt #4 (if there is such a thing). Come on people, as much money that has been made, there is no need for such stupid actions that will dismay way too many of the fan base.
