Julia Roberts Set to Eat, Pray, Love
Paramount Pictures recently picked up the rights to Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir Eat, Pray, Love for Pretty Woman Julia Roberts to star. I know Pretty Woman was a long time ago but it meant a lot to me, ok? Besides, who doesn't love a "hooker with a heart of gold" story? I know I do. And remember that scene when Richard Gere showed her the box with the necklace in it and then closed the lid on her hand so she jumped and then they both laughed? Priceless.Actually, Eat, Pray, Love has almost nothing to do with Pretty Woman except Julia Roberts so let's move on, shall we? The big screen version of Eat, Pray, Love will be written and directed by Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy, who is starting to make quite a name for himself taking these types of books to the big screen. His two most recent efforts, Running with Scissors, based on the memoir by Augusten Burroughs and Dirty Tricks, adapted from the book by Martha Mitchell, wife of former Nixon White House Chief of Staff John Mitchell, seem to indicate the writer/director has a soft spot for real-life people in real-life situations.
Too bad Murphy wasn't around to direct Roberts in Erin Brockovich; that might have been a really interesting film. Although, it's hard to fault the great job done by Steven Soderberg. Actually, if you think about it, Soderberg seems to like bringing books and real-life characters to the screen just like Murphy does. This is especially apparent when you look at a film like Erin Brockovich and his more recent directing work, the film Guerrilla, which is all about real-life rebel leader Ché Guevara and stars Benecio Del Toro as Ché. Maybe these guys are on to something. Maybe real life is more interesting than I think it is.
Anyway, the story of Eat, Pray, Love is pretty simple and follows the standard arc for fare of this type. It centers around Gilbert, who thought she had the perfect husband, the perfect apartment and the perfect life. Then, as she is trying to get pregnant and fit the final piece into the puzzle that is her "American Dream" she runs into a little problem when she realizes her life isn't actually quite so perfect after all.
So, she decides to take a serious detour and try to change her life for the better. After a messy divorce she embarks on the proverbial "journey of self-discovery" to see what her life is really supposed to be. Plus, I'm sure there must be some eating, praying and loving along the way too. I hope so or that title doesn't make any sense at all.

Thank you for your synopsis of this new film. I, too, am a big Julia fan. Love her! However, I have one question for you...if Erin Brockovich could have been, in your opinion, better directed, then why did Julia get not only a Golden Globe Award but also the Academy Award? Just a thought. No need to reply.

This "synopsis" was more about the writer of the "synopsis" than about the movie. No, thank you.

I heard Elizabeth Gilbert interviewed on Terry Gross' Fresh Air. Her book "Eat, Pray, Love." is essentially an autobiography...or more specially the story of her spiritual journal after I believe was her messy divorce. It was a terrific and inspirational interview. It will be interesting to see how they translate it into a screenplay and movie.

I loved the book. I hope the movie doesn't leave out the relationship she had right after the divorce. This was really what fueled her to make her journey. The book was so inspirational and uplifting. Can't wait to see the movie.

It's about time Julia is getting back in the game. I'm a huge fan of hers as well. I understand that she wanted to take time off to be with her kids, I have two kids also and a stay at home mom, but I think as well as a lot of other people, have missed her as an actress.

#2 your comments didn't make sense. This ARTICAL was about Julia Roberts doing a new movie, directors, and the trend of movies being made out non-fiction books. Yes this article is the opinion of the author, but it was hardly a synopsis. I think this article was charmingly written. It made me smile. It was informative, but not dry about the facts. It was tongue in cheek in some parts and all together lovely. I think perhaps #2, that reading comprehension lessons would be in order, that way you "might" understand this article and even realize the difference between an article and a synopsis. Then after that maybe some classes on manners so perhaps you can learn not to be so rude, but gracious instead and learn to hold your tongue (or fingers as the case may be), before you speak, as your statement was completely unnecessary and pointless.

Uh, how old is "Pretty Woman" anyway? About sixteen, seventeen years old? Something like that? Isn't it amazing that Julia Roberts is tagged with that in every, and I mean EVERY, article written about her? Seriously, it's like she didn't even need to work after that movie because it's not like everyone's trying that hard to remember other films she's been in.
This is not necessarily a complaint about the actress or about the writers, but if your true claim to fame is a decade-and-a-half old romantic comedy, and everything since has just slipped off the radar, something's wrong here.

Chris Ulrich should have left his personal comments out on this story of Julia Roberts and 'Eat, Love & Pray'. There should have been more about E, L & P and less about 'Pretty Woman'. WE all know 'Pretty Woman' made Julia the star she is today, but come on, it's just rehashing the past! I am looking forward to 'E, L & P', just like everyone else!

it would be great to show a woman on a journey to change her life after divorce - be great - do great things - marriage detoured you from this - most women are discouraged from following their dreams after marriage - men are afraid of losing their woman

Julia Roberts is so much more than a "pretty woman!" Her face is ever-changing, so amusing, and bemusing that I enjoy just watching her, whatever the movie. And she gets better all the time. I'm sure she will be around playing terrific elderly women if she wants to do so.

Julia Roberts has been in numerous "forgetable movies" as she really ISN'T that much of an actress. Having her play a HOOKER in "Pretty Woman" wasn't any "stretch of the imagination!"

I am not a fan of Roberts. I think she relies too much on her big, toothy smile and a few eccentricities to, basically, play the same part in every movie. While I'm aware those are just the things that most Julia Roberts fans appreciate, I find them tiresome.

I cant wait for another Roberts movie. Roberts is the modern day Katherine Hepburn--not the best actress but a personality that can fill several screens at once. There's an enduring beauty about her, which, just like Katherine, is odd--because they arent raving beauties to begin with. But again its the personality. I'd see her in a muppet movie if she were in it.

#6, I agree... There is a good side to that and a bad side to that. I think maybe the reason Julia will forever be linked to Pretty Woman in every article review about her is because she made one of the most memorable performances. She was aesthetically gorgeous, her personality was out of this world and she got into the hearts of very man, woman and child. The storyline is not something you would think would do that. But it was the special appearance of Julia.
But the other thing is, even if she won awards for Erin Brokovich and whatever else her performances may never be as memorable as the one she did in Pretty Woman. She was a real character in that movie.

Julia has talent. She is a diverse actress. She can play comedy and drama, and I wouldnt be hard pressed to think that she would do well in action films. She has grace and charm. That, paired with her skills, Julia doesn't need her external attributes as her edge. Many will be looking forward to Eat, Pray, Love, especially if she is as stellar as she was in Erin Brokovich!

I think she's great no matter what part she plays. She always does her best, and it always turns out great, but my favorite is when she is in love stories.
