Quickhits: Pitt Plays with State, Berg to Helm Tonight and About Those Deathly Orlando Bloom Rumors
Filed under: Action, Drama, Casting, Deals, Disney, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand, Brad Pitt, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Odds and ends from Thursday:
- If the BBC is correct, it looks like Brad Pitt's "interest" has turned into an official casting as far as that big-screen Americanized version of the BBC miniseries State of Play goes. Jim Abbott (writer and exec producer) confirmed Pitt's involvement after receiving a surprise phone call from the actor. Pitt will play a journalist named Cal McCaffrey who finds himself wrapped up in a murder conspiracy involving his former boss. [via Dark Horizons]
- What the hell is wrong with Tonight, He Comes? After going through THREE directors (Michael Mann, Jonathan Mostow, Gabriele Muccino), a new name is surfacing and we're praying this one actually sticks. According to Production Weekly, Peter Berg is close to helming the pic which finds Will Smith playing a superhero suffering through a mid-life crisis. If this is supposedly one of the "best unproduced scripts in town," then how come no one wants to direct it? Inquiring minds definitely want to know.
- Hey, remember how we told you that Orlando Bloom's character may not survive through a fourth Pirates installment? Well, Moviehole spoke with a rep for Disney who denied everything saying, "We are working closely with Disney and want you to know that while we cannot comment on specific plot points, such rumors are completely unfounded." Even if these rumors were true, it's not like Disney is going to come out and go, "That's it, you got us!" Personally, I say they kill off everyone except Captain Jack, then bring him back for a spin-off TV series on Cartoon Network called, The Adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow Jr. Whaddya think?

I say kill Sparrow. Depp's impersonation of Keith Richards is a far cry from acting. Ruined both movies for me, rather like Jar Jar.

There's now way you can compare Captain Jack to Jar Jar. Sure, Depp's performance may get on your nerves after awhile, but you have to admit he's the perfect pirate.

Well, I think the fact that Johnny's performance stays so strong with POTC viewers means exactly what I've thought of him all along....he's so into character (& loves what he does..acting)that you can't help but be intrigued and want to see more! My niece, Hailey, will KILL me for this...but I think the rumor of Orlando getting the 'pirate's boot' in a coming sequel is something that will keep me coming back just to see THAT happen.

Orlando Bloom's death (in the third or forth movie..) is expected, but nevertheless will bring devestation to a lot of his fans, and maybe ruin the movie for some. I say keep Bloom, throw out Kiera (I never liked her; seemed to snotty to me)

Orlando Bloom is the only reason I and other young women attend the viewing of POTC. Johnny Depp has his followers too, the older women and Bloom has the attention of the younger women, that and Keira's male admirer's gives everyone something to enjoy while watching POTC. The movies success is based on equality for all.

I agree with above. If they kill off Orlando, quite a bit of fans will stop going to the movies. What is Disney thinking?

Cheryl, you must be like...12. If you only go to see a movie because one man plays in it that you find attractive, that isn't very bright. You may use the word "woman" but your actions scream "child".

I'll take Orlando Bloom over Johnny Depp any day of the week. If Disney does away with Orlando then POTC won't get any more of my money.

Eh I loved Orlando in LOTR but when I saw Troy it ruined it for me. Let's just say I don't have the same viewpoint for him anymore.

I think without Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow in POTC will be a big loss. He plays a great pirate with a sense of humor and is fun to watch. I seen both POTC movies and have the DVD's'. POTC can't get any better than that.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! I love both Orlando Bloom and the POTC series but he better not die! I have to say that I would still watch the movies because they are amazing, but I would be absolutely devastated if Will didn't make it! I disagree with the article in that he IS a necessary character, and I'm not just saying that because he's unbelievably hot (which he is), but because Dead Man's Chest simply did not reveal enough about his character. I didn't like the second installment to the series, but believe that the third one will redeem POTC. We still have so much to learn about Will, as implied in both movies, and if he doesn't survive, it will have been a pointless try at mystery, and will kill an entire branch of the story's plot. For a successful film or book, you can't just focus on the main characters (and I think Keira Knightley is a horrible actress but absolutely necessary as well), you have to have intricate minor conflicts woven in as well to make for a complete storyline.

It's so obvious that this whole story was made up to begin with by someone who is envious of Orlando and the success of the franchise. It's just common sense. Just think about it -- even if the rumor were true, Disney would not be STUPID enough to give something like that away. Studios go to extremes of keeping screenplays even from actors for films in which they are trying to protect plots from being leaked. Do you actually believe Disney would let something like that come out especially with the success of the third installment hanging in the balance? Furthermore, do you actually think Disney would be DUMB and STUPID enough to kill off a character that plays an enormous role in bringing in theater goers? Who do you think is drawing the females in? It’s both Johnny AND Orlando. Keira and the pirate-themed action adventure are bringing in the males. ALL THREE ACTORS are ESSENTIAL to the continued success of the franchise. Disney has even made statements to that effect on SEVERAL occasions. The second installment, which has a plot that largely revolves around Orlando’s and Keira’s characters, just past the billion-dollar mark in revenues. Do you actually think Disney would be foolish enough to do away with the formula that has made it so successful? Heck no! Therefore, again, this whole story is made up by someone who is very obviously suffering a severe case of just plain 'ole jealousy and that is clearly reflected in the negative, bitter undertones of the article. It would be real easy for a so-called journalist to print such a false rumor and then tell Disney and/or the Daily Star "I got it from your camp, but I can't reveal my sources," thereby hindering a lawsuit from either, then come right back and say to the public, "Sorry guys for the false report. Disney says it's not true." But the so-called journalist would have still gotten the false story out there fulfilling his sole purpose of trying to cast a negative shadow on Orlando and the franchise. But, "Erik" and “Ryan” (might even be the same person) or whoever else came up with this lie, you're not fooling anyone. And judging by the remarks, your plan seems to be backfiring. It’s so pathetic to allow yourself to be consumed by envy. Get past it and be happy that others are doing well.

Kiera, Orlando and Johnny ARE essential to the success of the movies! It didn't have that wow factor of the first and doesn't leave you feeling satisfied like the last one is sure to.Remember when people were dissapointed with LOTR 2? Because it ended without answering a lot of questions or without explaining a lot of plot. Well, the 3rd took care of all that. I think the same will be true with the future Pirate movies.
