Chris Nolan Says No to the Penguin
Filed under: Action, RumorMonger, Fandom, Scripts, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Games and Game Movies
Does anyone else feel like we're playing the "how many consecutive days will we hear Dark Knight news from Christopher Nolan" game? If we are, I just scored again, because I'm back for another Nolan update, this one courtesy of an interview with Esquire. Apparently not content with denying various rumors about who could possibly play the part of Oswald Cobblepot (that's the Penguin, for you non-Bat types), Nolan has decided to once-and-for-all negate every possible Penguin rumor by denying the existence of the character in his movie. If this doesn't manage to quiet those pesky Penguin rumors I don't know what will -- but you and I both know it'll only be a few days before somebody is reporting a new cast move for the nonexistent part (and if they do, you can bet I'll be here to tell you about it). Here's what Nolan told the mag: "'I'd be more excited to have Philip Seymour Hoffman in the film than to have the Penguin. There are certain characters that are easier to mesh with the more real take on Batman we're doing. The Penguin would be tricky." And while I'd love to see Nolan's vision of the Penguin, I'm glad he's not going villain overboard -- too many bad guys spoils the ... uh, broth.

I agree with Nolan's decision. It's obvious his version of the Batman saga is aimed to be more realistic and the idea of a human/penguin hybrid parading around Gotham isn't very true to life.

Okay. I'm incredibly dissappointed. The Penguin's my all-time fav Bat-baddy, and I'd rather have "The Dark Knight" hounded by Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Penguin than Heath Ledger as Joker.

heath ledger? heath ledger? the guy has no personality. he has the personality of dead wood. You're gonna make him joker? and I once again will not go see the movie. While I love Christian Bale as Batman his enemies are less than intimidating. Good luck even coming close to Jack Nicholson's Joker, Heath. U have no chance but i'll catch the movie on HBO one day and enjoy watching u struggle and fail. Spider Man 3, now thats the movie to watch. they finally got their best story in, the one of Venom. I doubt that the actors will stick around long enough to make a movie with Cletus Cassidy (a.k.a. Carnage). They have a weird sense of ego that makes them stop after like 3 or 4 films. Tobey Macguire you stay on as long as they want u to man you have nothing else to prove.

This is perfect. Harvey's story and the Joker's story is plenty to deal with for this movie as major characters. If Penguin were to show, he'd have to be a cameo...
I'm still holding out for him as the second villain in 3, or a cameo at least. Moreso than him, though, I'd love to see Roman Sionis/Black Mask show up. He parallels nicely to Bruce Wayne/Batman, and so does Harvey, each in their own ways. That duality could unify the third movie.

Good. The Penguin is an asinine character, demolishing the last of the possible plausibility that makes me so fond of Batman.

Thank God. The Penguin is easily one of the worst villains ever. Retarded. Two-Face is the way to go after the Joker.
Oh, and Sean? Venom is perhaps even more retarded a villain than the Penguin. Ledger, through the help of Nolan, and Batman II will pwn Spiderman III.

I've been reading some of the comments on the Dark Knight and i noticed that some people were bashing Heath Ledger about being Joker. Heath Ledger is one of the most amazing actors out there. From what we've seen in him in Brokeback Mountain and Candy, I'm really excited about what he is going to do with the Joker.

I have to admit that I was skeptical about Heath Ledger portraying the Joker. I just couldn't see him in the part of a comic book character. But I have seen almost all of his movies, and his acting is incredible. I believe that he will not only "pull off" his role as the Joker, he will blow you away with his performance. Give him a chance.

A)Keep the faith, kids: Ledger is going to make an amazing Joker. Just everyone watch. Seriously.
B)Sean: Carnage? CARNAGE???????? Are you serious? You want a second-rate Venom ripoff in one of these movies? Why don't you have the damn Clone Wars turned into a movie while you're at it?
C)I think comic-book-movies should really have a one-major-villian-per-movie rule. It really makes for a better movie because the director has the screen time to establish the villian as someone menacing instead of just having us sort of take the movie's word for it.

Everyone knows that the Robert DeNiro version of the Penguin in Batman Returns is nothing like the Penguin from the comic books, right?
In the comics, Penguin's essentially a high-class crime lord with a bird motif. Perhaps not the most interesting of villains, but certainly not as silly as he came across in Returns.
I actually think Batman Begins set up a potential entrance for the Penguin very well. He could have moved into Gotham's underworld to take advantage of the power vacuum left when Falconi went down.

First off, my fellow Gothamites, let us prepare to take our viewing seats at the box office with an open mind. When Jack Nicholson was first advertised as having the role of the Joker in the Tim Burton version of Batman, many people had their doubts. I am not stating that I think Ledger is an amazing actor or appropriate for the role, however I am willing to go and see The Dark Knight with an open mind. If you really go down the list of all the actors attached to the Dark Knight, you will see just how powerful of a cast you have. Ledger just might pull a rabbit out of his hat and completely redefine the role of the Joker. As far as the Penguin goes, I wouldn't mind seeing a cameo, but we all know that the Joker and the Penguin could never theatrically share the same spotlight. Harvey Dent would be an excellent edition, because he is such a strong dynamic character in the Batman stories. Ryan Phillipe isn't my first choice, but neither was Bale as Batman and look how well that worked out. I think that Nolan will not disappoint and that we should trust his judgement a little more.
