No Arnie for Terminator 4

Remember when news of Terminator 3 broke? Nobody was quite sure if they should be happy for it, or worried about it ruining the franchise. As it turned out, it was a nice installment in the sci-fi franchise and pulled a more impressive box office take than many had predicted. Of course when this happened, we all knew Terminator 4 was a carved-in-stone deal -- Hollywood gets every last mile they can out of franchises these days -- and sure enough, news of another film followed quickly thereafter. The big question was "what about Arnold?" After all, the star of the series went and became Governor of the world's fifth largest economy during the downtime between movies; one would expect running such a thing would leave one with precious little down time. The Governator agreed with this assessment, saying his movie career would be all but dead (he'd be willing to do spot cameos and the like from time to time) for the duration of his service. But he continued to insist he'd do some work on Terminator 4. As of right now it looks like his other job isn't going anywhere for awhile, so just how does he plan to make another film? Well ... he doesn't, at least not according to co-writer Michael Ferris, who recently said "'Terminator 3 kind of closed the book on Schwarzenegger, as did his gubernatorial career." While I continue to be intrigued by a movie about the post-apocalyptic future of the Terminator world, something just feels wrong about a Terminator movie without ... you know, the original Terminator. What say you -- can the series survive without the man himself?

It barely survived the loss of James Cameron.
The question isn't so much *can* the series continue as *should* it?

If they don't attach some big names to the fourth installment, then I'm scared it will feel like direct-to-dvd fare.
I just wonder who they will get to replace Arnold as the main robot? The Rock? Ugh.

Considering according to Terminator mythology, or whatever you want to call it, the Arnold model terminators don't begin to show up for 20 years after the war starts, I'd say there doesn't need to be a "main robot." It definitely can survive with a good filmmaker. The movie should focus on the war, humans vs. the machines, but I'm pretty confident it won't. With Mostow at the helm, I feel like the film will be of the same thematic and story arc as T2 (and T3). There will be a main hero to protect John Conner (maybe Kyle Reese) from a main evil robot. There might be something stupid like Skynet sends another advanced terminator back to the beginning of the war...just a reworking. I'm pessimistic, but I'll see it anyway just to give it a chance. I'll probably wait to rent it on dvd for a dollar, though.

Nah, it's too big of a franchise to go straight to DVD. If it does, I will be very very surprised ... and kind of bummed out.

I didn't think T3 was that hot to be honest. It was an 'OK' action film, but it was a rubbish Terminator film.
Maybe if they got Robert Patrick in, they might be able to grab my interest. Otherwise, nope.

they could cover the period of time between skynet taking over and when they developed t-1000 series of terminators. if you do the math (based on original movie dialog) john connor is roughly 41 before the "arnold" model is created...
Reese: The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy, but these are new. They look human - sweat, bad breath, everything. Very hard to spot. I had to wait till he moved on you before I could zero him.
Sarah Connor: Look... I am not stupid, you know. They cannot make things like that yet.
Kyle Reese: Not yet. Not for about forty years.
maybe arnold could have a cameo at the end rolling off the assembly line... or they could explain why the machines modeled the one of t-1000's after a former california governor.

Whatever they do, it will tie into the upcoming TV series "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" and I would think it would be the gap between the series and the first movie. That 40 year span of development of SkyNet and the first sentience is the build up of the series. The actual swing of power and the post Skynet ruled world would make a good movie. And even if Arnold is not 'in' the movie, he could license his likeness for the first rubber skinned robots and have an impersonator do the voice.

It could survive.
I agree with some comments from above, it'll cover the skynet vs humans...
and ALL arnie has to do is his cameo as his is digitized off the assembly line... and HE sent back to kill Sarah Connor...
and there you go, SHUT OFF and END this franchise in a nice enclosed series...
(yeah right... )
I liked T3... didn't expect much, but i liked it...

Angelides should start running a new campaign ad stating voting against Arnold for Govenor is a vote for T4. shrug. but back to the movie if the recent gossip that they might digitize Bruce Lee for a new movie then it should be possible to digitize Arnold for T4.
