Fox and Universal Pull Plug on Halo Movie

Both Fox and Universal have decided to pull the plug on the Halo movie adaptation due to concerns over the rising budget and novice director Neil Blomkamp. The budget on the film has been rumored to approach $200 million, well above the original $135 million, a claim strongly denied by executive producer Peter Jackson's agent Ken Kamins. According to Kamins, "What happened was this: Universal, on behalf of both studios, asked for a meeting with the filmmakers just prior to the due date of a significant payment. Basically, they said that in order to move forward with the film, the filmmakers had to significantly reduce their deals. They waited until the last minute to have this conversation. Peter and Fran, after speaking with their producing partners and with Microsoft and Bungee (the studio that designed the original game), respectfully declined." The due date he refers to is the now past-due October 15th deadline that Microsoft set for an up-front payment of $5 million for the rights to the film and the script penned by Alex Garland, and a further payment of 10% of the gross.
While waiting until the last minute is nothing new in Hollywood or other business ventures, it is hard to argue with Universal and Fox's decision to pull out at this stage. Even though the two studios were partnered on the film, they would have both been laying out more than $100 million each in budget costs, to share only 45% of the profits, in a genre that has never performed well at the box office -- video game adaptations.
The involvement of Peter Jackson was a huge shot in the arm for the production, but there have been many concerns over the hiring of first-time director Blomkamp to the project, who only has 3D animation and short film credits to his name. Not exactly someone you'd want to trust with a $200 million dollar budget, and the reins to the crown jewel in Microsoft's gaming empire. Blomkamp's short film Alive in Joburg does have strong visual elements reminiscent of the Halo universe, but it would be an enormous leap to go from that to a mega-budget Hollywood tentpole.
Pre-production work continues on the film, and Kamins claims that they remain behind Blomkamp's vision for the film, but with two major Hollywood studios pulling out, what are the chances it will make it to theaters?

Maybe now Peter Jackson can move up work on The Hobbit. Was anyone really looking forward to Halo: The Movie anyway? Even the XBox Fanboys weren't looking forward to it.

I'm an Xbox fanboy who was looking forward to it. I admit, I wasn't interested at all at first. I'm not the kind of guy who would throw money on something just because I like the franchise. But after I saw Blomkamp's work, I realized that this guy is the only guy on Earth who could do this movie RIGHT. Who cares that he's inexperienced? That just mean's he's not gonna Hollywood the crap out of the movie. Who else would Fox want? Uwe Boll? The director of Doom? The director of Super Mario Brothers? All those movies sucked.
I really think Universal and Fox are dropping the ball here. I hope this movie gets picked up by someone else and makes a billion dollars.

I was. The Halo world was pretty expansive, and if you ever read the books, you know what we are missing out on

The only problem I would have with this movie is that it most likely wouldn't stay true to the game. Just like that super mario movie.

I am a Xbox fanboy too. Halo was going to be the best movie that would have come out this or next year. I mean honestly im dissapointed in Bungie and Peter Jackson. That wont stop me from buying their games but it really sucks for the whole industry. Will Halo 3 be cancelled also? It makes Bungies credit go down.

I've played halo. I've seen some bad movies in my life. Like Titan AE. With a 100 million + budget they could of spent a little more on the script and bad lines. That's what makes a movie flop.
Best movie for next year, hopefully will be Transformers. Original voice who does Optimus Prime is alive and he is on board. Autobots, roll out!

No way this film would have made back it's budget... it's too narrow a niche. The studios showed some intelligence and business sense.

Obviously the best players in Halo don't know how to speak English or write it correctly? Maybe it is a good thing this movie will not be made.

I think Fox, Universal, and some of the above posters are underestimating the reach of Halo appeal. I don't think it's too small a niche at all. I'm a Halo Fan GIRL and I absolutely LOVE the games. I've never seen any video-game branch off movies like Doom or Bloodrayne butI planned on seeing the Halo film with my guy friends. There are hundreds of thousands of people who play Halo 2 over xbox live ( http://www.bungie.net/Stats/ ). That number doesn't even include people who play the games offline with their friends. Also consider how many people who would see the movie just because of Peter Jackson's involvement. It's clearly going to be part action movie, part epic-drama and what American male doesn't like action movies? There's your target audience right there. If the movie has a solid plot and storyline, which I think is definitely possible, favorable reviews will spread by word of mouth and even more people would go see it. Sure it's always possible that the movie could have a terrible plot and cardboard acting but that's a risk with every movie. When the Halo movie was first announced I was really skeptic but they got Peter Jackson on board and I have faith that it'll be a quality film. At any rate if you look at what the studios have been throwing their money at lately (cough, cough) Poseidon (also known as Titanic-lite), which NOBODY was excited for, I figure the studios might as well throw money behind a venture that has a passionate base.

Im also a xbox fanboy as well and i would just like to mention that this movie was probably going to make serious money. I have friends that only played the game for a week or two before getting into another (whose name im not going to mention) and they were looking up to it. Peter Jackson and bungie should try and make thing happen since they already started with this. If this ever makes it to theaters, for sure i'll go watch.

See, to me, a Halo movie was never going to be that interesting. Who is Master Chief? What's his deal? If the most interesting thing about a character is his weapons selection, I don't care.
Now (channeling my inner 16-year old Sci-fi fan), A Ringworld movie, I'd see. ...

Are you serious? why would you want a gay, scrawny guy as master chief. If the movie gets started again, MC should be played by Bruce Willis or Jason Statham (even if he does have an english accent).

Well I've seen a preview (whether it was made by this guy or another) and it was looking great and I've read the script and it didn't seem to change the story of the game it just makes it more detailed and it really makes it look like the future of games where more things are possible it was an insparation and I'm sure it would be a breakthrough in the movie/game relationship
