Borat: The (kind of) Sequel
Filed under: Comedy, Deals, Box Office, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand
While the word is still out on whether Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (aka I Cannot Wait Until I No Longer Have to Type That Ridiculously Long Title) will hit or miss with audiences, Sacha Baron Cohen is already hard at work on his follow-up film. Word of the new flick came after Fox announced it would debut Borat on only 800 screens (what's up with that?) before rolling it out wider once audience awareness of the film begins to heighten.
As far as Cohen's next pic goes, he will be writing and producing it alongside Jay Roach, who also served as a producer on Borat. The currently untitled film will shoot next summer and follow the same format as Borat, however Baron Cohen will create a brand new character to send out onto the streets. Of course, the description of said character is being kept under wraps right now so that no one sees him coming. Darn. No word yet on whether Larry Charles will once again step behind the camera.
Okay, so two questions for you: How much do you think Borat will gross worldwide when it's all said and done? Also, who (or what) would you like to Sacha Baron Cohen dress up as for his next film?

When I first heard that they were making a Borat movie, I was excited but unsure on how it could be marketed.....all I have to say is that Cohen and the rest of the marketing team need to be given medals for how they were able to get this much hype for the movie. Its most likely more brilliant than the movie itself. I have heard great things and I look forward to its release. I'm guessing it will definately score the number 1 spot for a while while pulling in around 300 million worldwide...but i dunno...it could go higher...

the sequal should be about Bruno, the gay German fashion reporter from Da Ali G Show. Although this is an established character, I think it has better potential than Borat because of the fashion world. Clips from the tv show with Bruno are sometimes as funny or even better than Borat.

i agree...Bruno was hilarious...especially when he interviewed the Southern Football Coach about his team's uniform fashion. I have never laughed so hard at a homophobic southern in forever.

"around 300 million worldwide"
I highly, highly doubt that.

While Bruno is a classic character, I think I'd like to see Cohen do something new here (as the Variety article suggests). Something tells me he'll be playing either a political figure or some sort of war hero/soldier. Dunno.

The Iraqi minister of information? He went missing, maybe he escaped to America with his family.

As much as I want to see the film really hit, I can't imagine more than $40 mil domestic, especially now that I read they're doing a limited rollout. So it'll be in 800 theaters on 10/3, then roll out to 2,000+... against the new Will Ferrell movie on 10/10? Brilliant. Way to waste all the buzz, minimize curiosity dollars, and place your film in direct competition with a known box office draw in a more commercial picture, Fox!
