Stop Press: Tom Cruise Goes Trek?
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Tom Cruise, Remakes and Sequels
Oh man, I'd love to know how you Trekkies feel about this one. Keep in mind these are only rumors, but apparently Tom Cruise is eager to make a cameo appearance in the next Trek film. Of course, like with most stuff circulating the net, some top secret insider told Canada's TV Guide magazine that Cruise "didn't even need to be begged to appear in it." That's right, Mr. Scientology himself is, not surprisingly, a huge fan of the sci-fi franchise. Imagine that.
As you already know, J.J. Abrams (who's currently tapped to produce and direct Star Trek XI) and Cruise are buddies, having partnered together on the latest installment in the Mission Impossible franchise. Whether or not Cruise will actually make an appearance remains to be seen -- no one else has been cast in the film yet -- though some Trekkies feel he would make a good Starfleet Academy instructor. Hmm, maybe he could tap into the role he would've played in the non-existent Top Gun sequel?
Now, I have to ask: Is this something you Trek fans would get behind? Or, in your opinion, would Cruise's casting just totally destroy the franchise?

It would be cool- if only a cameo. Cruise sells tickets bigtime. And Trek can use all the help it can get. Though of course Trekkies will be appalled. But they pretty much hate everything so who cares?

I'm not even a Trekkie, and I hate to hear this...ugh. The last thing this world needs is more Tom Cruise.

I find this rumor, illogical and interesting at the same time.
I'm not at all endorsing a Tom Cruise appearance (maybe with some heavy makeup)but didn't Cruise just get canned by Paramount? The same Paramount that owns the Star Trek franchise??

I have watched Star Trek almost my whole life growing up. I think that adding a cameo from Cruise would be wicked! As for those who bag on Scientology as a Sci-fi cult, you have no idea what a Sci-Fi cult is. If TC does make a Star Trek cameo appearance, I have only one thing to say: TC, you have a sense of humor after all!
We proudly welcome you to the "cult"!

That's awesome I'm not a Star Trek fan,but I'll probably go see it just because Tom Cruise is in it, if it is true!

I'm a pretty devoted Trek fan, and I'd have no problem with a Cruise cameo. It wouldn't be unlike Christian Slater's 30 seconds in Star Trek VI. Anything more than that would be distracting, to say the least.

I'm not sure I would go and see it with TC -- all attention would be on his "cameo" rather than on the story and characters that JJ dreams up. Would it get better box office with TC? Who knows. Ugh. The end of the ST world as we know it.

They should just CGI a younger William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy. To have the guy from "Cocktail" and "Risky Biness" play Capt. Kirk....EWWWWWWWWW

I'm a huge Old Series fan and I would be ok with it as long as he is an alien. Otherwise, It would lose the believability factor. Frankly, I'm not looking forward to Matt Damon as Kirk. Not that he's not a good actor, I just don't see it. Please, please don't put any actors in there that are blandly good-looking. We need people with real charisma and talent. Please, please don't make Trek as slick as Lost and Alias. It's just too teflon for me. Need something with more grit and passion.

I'd love Tom Cruise to have a came on the next Star Treck movie. I wouldn't miss it, no matter what role he plays. But it is my policy not to believe any rumour about Tom Cruise in the media because 99% of those have proven to be false during the last year. So I only believe it if it is offitially announced by his reps or himself. Else see to believe.

It's the logical thing to do. First thing is Tom needs to lighten up a bit. Second he's a friend of JJ (MI3 director) third, he loves Star Trek. Forth, If he did a large cameo for Austin Powers why not Trek.
Paramount and Tom no longer do large deals, but they are not stupid to forbid him to be in a cameo that could bring the women into a Trek movie (something lacking in the past)
I welcome his star power to the series but only in a cameo. I fear geeks will be intimidated by such good looking guy. That's why we love nerds like Austin, Shaggy, Peewee, Peter Parker.
If Tom does it, it will be his first time in space. I also have this feeling because he loves Spock so much he might play a Vulcan.
Live long and prosper.

Well, nice to see the boardspamming Scienos are so alert to any mention of TC. I have been a Trek fan for many years, but will not spend any money to support any film with Tom Cruise in it.

Oh my god Gio! That's brilliant. He'd make an excellent Vulcan - he's got the perfect features for it. He could come in as a relative of Spock or something.
I think Sci-Fi is one of Tom's strong points, and I would like to see him do more in that genre. It's one of the best things to go see at the theatre. But it'd have to be quality Sci-fi like Minority Report, or the last episode of ST Voyager.

Thank you Dragonfly. Tom can defenetly play Spock's nephew.(if you recall Spock had a brother who met God in Star Trek 5: The curse of the odd numbers) Anyway I strongly believe Tom will most likely produce this film, as he's done on many of his movies.
The need of the many....

tom cruise in star trek? - ewwwwww! - don't say it - don't consider it! - eeeeew! - the beauty of Trek is that it has cast people who aren't overexposed superstars - it wouldn't be oh, look at the character, it would be oh, look, it's Tom Cruise - Star Trek is such a cool world on it's own and if you put Tom Cruise in it, it just whips you right out into the real world
