Not One, but Two LOTR Prequels?

At one point, we weren't even sure a feature film version of The Hobbit would ever see the light of day. Well folks, either MGM chief Rick Sands was all doped up on pipeweed or we're about to get not one, but two Lord of the Rings prequels. Sands made the comment while promoting MGM's future plans after Sylvester Stallone was presented with the ShowEast Icon Award in Orlando, Florida on Tuesday. According to Sands, MGM is currently in discussions with New Line for the rights to produce two prequels based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.
Now, tell me if I'm out of line here, but they could make five prequels -- yet, if Peter Jackson isn't involved in any of them, then why even bother? It's important to note that Jackson's name wasn't mentioned, but you'd think the dude would play a role in some capacity, right? As far as those other MGM films Sands talked up, they're "packaging" up the fourth Terminator film right now ... minus Arnold. Sands joked that it would be called, "Terminator blah blah, not Four." On making a fourth film without Arnold, he noted, "It's like the Batman or Superman franchise in that it lends itself to having different actors in the roles." I wouldn't go that far ... but OK. MGM is also preparing a sequel to The Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan already attached, as well as a remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring Ashton Kutcher and Martin Lawrence. (OK, I made up the Kutcher and Lawrence bit, but c'mon -- nothing will ever top the original.)

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is already a remake. I wish they would release the original (called Bedtime Stories) in the US on DVD (I really like the original, but love the remake as well).
I wouldn't be suprised if your prediction came true though, seems to be the way we're headed.

Well gosh - y'know how it is when you find that tiny flaw that someone else makes that makes you feel like not losing your virginity till you were 26 is just fine and had no impact on your self-esteem? But then you read that someone else has already pointed it out and so you crawl under your desk for a thumb-suck and a good cry...? That uh... that didn't just happen to me.
But yeah. Bedtime Stories was the original and apparently, it was pretty toppable. Then again, you could put Steve Martin and Michael Caine into a remake of The Bare Wench Project (never saw it - honest) and it'd probably be a hit...

Nothing to do with Lord of The Rings should be made without Peter Jackson - it is his vision that made the trilogy so great. It would be a disservice to the integrity of the film to do it without him.

First off I came to read an article about LOTR prequels and I hear the name Sylvester Stallone and I wanted to puke. Then, I realized he had nothing to do with the LOTR projects and instantly felt better. However, it is in my opinion that without Peter Jackson the prequels could very likely be way below subpar. I doubt any other director would have put the time and energy into the project that he had. The lengths he went to build The Shire, and to build a sense of kinship amongst the cast... I doubt anyone could do a better job, nor a job anywhere near as close.
That however, is only my humble opinion. Also, if they were to do a prequel... I would like it if they covered a basis of maybe... ten movies. Incorporating the tales of Middle Earth that sort of prequeled the LOTR trilogy, and also covering The Hobbit. That however would take WAAAAAAAAAAAY too long to do.
Oh well, can't hurt to hope I suppose.

1. Ring ...What ring ?!?
2. Hey Dude wheres my Pokeweed ?

I have to say that making anything LOTR without Peter Jackson would be total failure! His creativness with the movies was awsome! No one would be able to compare to him and his direction. His mind works his own personality and you can't copy that.If Jackson isn't involved, there's no way I care to see the movies. It just wouldn't make sence.

The emperor has no clothes!... Making The Hobbit with someone other than Peter Jackson is not just doable, but a very good idea. For whatever he brought to the movies, considerable as it was, I saw as many drawbacks... I thought the films only got better as they went along with the just the Return of the King being a good film (despite a superfluous opening, and five different endings). Jackson just doesn't know what to leave out... and if you think I don't know what I'm talking about, take a look at King Kong... a foolproof action film that he just made a mess of.

Producing The Hobbit without Peter Jackson would be a waste of time and money AND artistic genius. His attention to detail during the LOTR's movies was one of the reasons the series was so sensational. (Tolkiens writing was the other of course)It would be presumptious for anyone to even attempt to produce The Hobbit without Jacksons input after the incredible job he did with the LOTR.

I personally think, being a fan of LOTR, that there shouldn't be any prequels. I mean isn't Hollywood employing any new writers with new visions. I'm sorry but I am tired of seeing re-makes of good movies and come on there are so many movies being made into trilogies or having prequels. Some things are left better as they are. And besides we have the books like "The Hobbit", there's no need for a movie. Furthermore if Peter Jackson was to direct these two prequels he most likely wouldn't do them simultaneously. He stated that he would never take on that pressure again like with LOTR. It would turn out to take at least a year for each prequel. Hollywood needs to step up and give us some new stuff, things we haven't heard of or seen before.

Hold your horses Ring lovers!!! Can we just get along?? This article is only a rumor about MGM trying to convince New Line to surrender LOTR rights to them so they can make the prequal. It won't happen without getting permision from The Tolkien foundation(the family who inherited the rights)And they themselves had claimed that only if Peter Jackson is involved they will relinquish it.
Please man, do not mention Sylvester Stallone in the same breath as LOTR. You scared the $#@% out of me.
I am going to shut my mouth cause maybe Rocky 6 will win an Oscar. who knows.
I think MGM plans to get Peter to produce and use his FX house. In other words: give this new film the same look and feel of the old trilogy, without paying the 20 million Peter will demand if he directs it.
Concerning T4 without Arnold. It won't happen. Why? Because he himself said: "I'll be back" if he loses the next election.
I understand LOTR movies are Hobbit forming but we have no control what MGM and New Line will do except they just want to make lots of money. Also keep in mind New Line owes money to Peter (lawsuits still pending) which might trigger this company to go elsewhere for new direction.
My bottom line is : One director to film them all!!

Ok, the fact is Jackson screwed up the whole thing! He was apparently too *&^^ing ignorant to make The Hobbit in the first place! Don't get me wrong, I loved the LOTR movies, even if they were twisted around for no reason at all. But come on! The Hobbit is how the ENTIRE story line starts!

Are we talking Silmarillion here, or breaking The Hobbit into two movies? And not having Jackson as part of the picture? Are you kidding me?!

It would only be fitting that Peter Jackson do the ''Hobbit'' and also the "Silmarillion"... Those two alone would be awesome done by Jackson. Not someone else.
