Tim Burton Directs a Killer Video
Filed under: Music & Musicals, Fandom, Home Entertainment
Hey, remember how I told you about the Killers video that Tim Burton was reportedly directing back in September? At the time, no one knew when and how we would ever get to see the thing, as Burton was busy building miniature sets in London. Well, guess what -- MTV has your first look at the brand spanking new video over on their site, and the thing looks sweeter than sweet ... if that's possible.
It's for a really groovy (man, I sound like my dad) song called Bones, and the music video marks Burton's first as a director. After watching it, like me, you'll probably wish the guy would direct a lot more of them. As promised, it's filled with plenty of Burton-esque material, including nods to a few B-horror movies, lots and lots of skeletons and a jazzed up drive-in movie theater. Oh, and as an added bonus, there's also a "making of" featurette which follows the actual video. If there was ever a perfect song for Tim Burton to run with, this is it. Do yourself a favor and go check this bad boy out.
Here's a question: If you could have any filmmaker direct a music video, who would it be and which song?

Why is it rubbish? I thought it was pretty cool, and the song rocks.

Well for a start, how many Killers music videos have there been with them performing in a desert in front of a large screen now? I've lost track.
Other than that, some poor skeleton effects and a shoddy
treatment amount to something Burton quite frankly could have coughed up with some cornflakes over breakfast.

I wouldn't say featuring a clip of Creature from the Black Lagoon is paying homage to B-horror films. As for the other two clips I spotted, one is appropriately some Harryhausen animation, maybe from Sinbad, and Lolita, which I don't really understand the relevance of.
Anyway, I also agree that the video is pretty weak even for Burton. It really makes the beginning of Landis' video for Thriller seem like even more of a classic. At the time it was at least camp. This is just corny.
As for the making of: Burton looks awful!

Hey it had Devon Aoki in it, that was a major plus on top of the fact it was done by Burton.

MTV's website just doesn't make it worth watching anyway. Oh well.

To answer the question about fantasy director/artist matchups for music vids:
Madonna and Quetin Tarantino - Does Madonna have pretty feet? Perhaps, but only Tarantino's brilliance will give her a chance to look as hot as Uma. This video would turn out to be everything the banned "What It Feels Like for a Girl" vid was supposed to be, but wasn't.
Eminem and Steven Spielberg - Eminem is genius and if he partnered with Spielberg they could tell an excellent story in a 4 minute and 30 seconds masterpiece. Depending on the message (and with these 2 there will be a message), Eminem may have to create a character. But don't worry, he's done some of his best work while pretending to be someone else (Slim Shady, Rabbit, etc.)
Gwen Stefani and Ang Lee - Gwen has been on a streak lately of throwing as much flash into her music and videos as possible. Rumor has it the new album loses the retro cues. With it she should lose the bling, and instead call on the master of subtle but stunning.
