Singer Signs for More Superman
Filed under: Action, Deals, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Just a few days ago, Superman Returns finally broke the magic $200 million domestic box office mark set by Warner Bros. as the necessary standard for a sequel. With the benchmark met, the studio sat down with director Bryan Singer this past weekend and inked out terms for a new deal. IESB did some investigating, and they report the following from "studio insider" sources:- Most, if not all, of the original Returns team will be working on the sequel, and the big deals were all finalized late last week or this past weekend, only days before the $200 million take became official.
- The much-rumored smaller budget is fact. All told, Returns cost over $250 million. The new flick will be slashed all the way down to a piddling $140-175 million. This is still a lot of money, so you need not worry about a severe deterioration of CGI or other effects.
- Much like the Fantastic Four and other superhero flicks, the sequel plans to have much, much more action. Comic book movies often struggle to find the balance between plot and action; a struggle which often damages promising flicks. Maybe as we press on, writers, directors, and studios will get better at finding said balance. We can hope, right?
What say you? Can Singer pull off a sequel that's better than his own so-called sequel?

It is really nice to hear that there is a sequel. Now I am afraid that it would not do good compared to the original since the budget was cut off already.

I just hope they bring back the genius that penned the line, "I forgot how warm you are", because that just tied the whole craptastic film together. That, and Junior Clark's storyline.
Warner Bros could film a monkey throwing it's feces against a wall for two hours and it would be more entertaining than Singer's latest foray into the comic book genre.
Just MY $.02...

Actually the Richard Donner cut of Superman II is what the storyline was founded upon, which will soon be available on DVD at the end of Nov. Also take note that even though they say the budget is smaller on this film than the first, be aware that over $50 million of the Superman Returns budget was past expenses from previous failed Superman projects which were figured into the 'Returns' budget because they were losses that needed to be covered in order to profit from the future franchise. Around 2-3 different projects were slashed in pre-production stages because of various problems (the last director was scared of flying, pushed to have the film shot in NY but due to film costs they finalized on Australia, then at the time of his departure he refused to board the plane, hence all expenses wasted) So really there isnt a big gap in budget for the two films, this one just doesn't come with a debt like the previous....

"I forgot how warm you are" was a good line, and it's logical--he's solar-powered, isn't he? I have heard that "Monkey Throwing His Feces Against A Wall" is in turnaround, because they couldn't get Rob Schneider to commit.

I just wish Singer had done to Superman what Nolan did in Batman Returns and just reboot the damn franchise. Maybe now he at least has a chance to move away from the semi-campy, cartoony feel of all the previous Superman movies and give us something with some more grit and current DC reality like the big S deserves.

I was a Bryan Singer fan until I saw Superman Returns. Is Warner hoping he can pull a rabbit out of the hat with a second film because the first one, which I had incredible high hopes for - disappointed.
Also disappointed (but not suprised) to hear that most of the original cast will return. They need to recast Lois Lane, Perry White and Jimmy Olsen. All of them in Supe Returns - sucked!

He's done it before. X2 was far superior to the first X-Men movie...

I actually liked all of the casting with the possible exception of Kate Bosworth (although I warmed up to her when she showed her own personality in a interview with Conan O'Brien, and she wasn't as nasty as her portrayal of Lois made her seem--I didn't like the way that she treated Clark); however, if they have to put a bustle and other strategic padding on, please let her not appear the anorexic looking waif that she did in the first film! Lois Lane is a woman, not a little girl playing dress-up in her mommy's big-girl clothes! Eat something, Kate! A sandwich...some Ho-Hos...a Hostess cupcake!
