Happy Halloween (Remake Details from Rob Zombie)!
Filed under: Horror, The Weinstein Co., Remakes and Sequels
At first we couldn't get nine words out of Rob Zombie regarding his remake of John Carpenter's Halloween, but once you get finished reading this MTV interview piece, you'll know more than you probably need to about the rocker's re-do plans. (Forgive me if I express mild disdain throughout this report, as I think Rob Zombie has about as much chance of helming a quality Halloween remake as I have of sleeping with Milla Jovovich ... although obviously I'll keep my fingers crossed on both counts.)
To his credit, Mr. Zombie (acccurately) cites Cronenberg's The Fly and Carpenter's The Thing as two of the only worthwhile horror remakes ever made -- and those revisits worked because you had fresh-minded directors who were passionate about using a classic flick as a jumping-off point towards something DIFFERENT. So points for Zombie on that count, even if I wouldn't re-watch The Devil's Rejects or House of 1000 Corpses on a bet.
The rather extensive article also goes into Zombie's intentions regarding the Michael Meyers character, whom he hopes to flesh out as more than just a shadowy background character, some of the "wish list" actors for the Dr. Loomis character (Jeff Bridges and Ben Kingsley have been mentioned), and (of course) the dangers of remaking such a hardcore horror classic. Fans of the Halloween series, even those who are dreading Zombie's re-interpretation, will find a surprising amount of insight from Mr. Zombie -- so here's hoping the flick turns out great. I'm not holding my breath, but hey, it feels better to stay positive -- even when every gorehound instinct I have is screaming NoOoOoOoOooooo!!!

Halloween is my favorite movie of all time and I would probably be distressed about Zombie doing a remake of it if I weren't so burned out on so many other crappy remakes these days, Texas Chainsaw, The Omen, Amityville, etc., etc., etc.
I may see the remake just out of pure curiousity's sake, but I could care less that it's getting made. And after Halloween 5 and H2O, could this really be any worse than those flicks? Good luck to Mr. Zombie, but I'm sure his movie will be a turd. 1,000 Corpses was such a mess, I'll probably never sit through The Devil's Rejects.

I have to quickly point out that Mr. Zombie will not Rob me of my money, for i will not see another Halloween remake. Specially from the man who brought us 1000 Corpses, and Devil's Rejects.
It is too bad. There are so many good scary stories to tell, and Zombie could film something not dealing with knife-welding masked men. Aren't we all tired of that crap already? True horror goes beyond young-good-looking women being killed.
I really think movie makers are afraid to take chances, and thus rely on the safe and easy path of remakes. That's a true horror in itself. It bothers me.
Is it me or my imagination? or do you think the poster for Halloween is chock full of sexual innuendos? look at the male hand as it rock itself in pleasurable motion (for the kill I guess) What the jerking hand seems to be holding doesn't seem to be a knife handle, but a rather large phalic symbol- Clearly targeted at the (pimple-face, hormone-filled) male population who flocked to see this film.
This somehow reminds me of Darth Vader's helmet: the biggest fear in the white man's world (you do the math)
To Rob Zombie: Back off and film something else!!!
