Although the rumor had been lingering around for over a year now, Brian De Palma will officially begin production on a prequel to The Untouchables (Dear God, why?) this June. The Untouchables: Capone Rising will be based off a script written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the same duo who brought us films like Rounders, Knockaround Guys and the upcoming Ocean's Thirteen. I'm not sure why De Palma would even go near his own classic 20 years later -- I mean, is the guy struggling for material or what?
Story will revolve around Al Capone's early days on the mob scene, and how his rise to power was due, in part, to the seedy, corrupt side of law enforcement. Pic will also focus on Capone's relationship with detective Jimmy Malone (played by Sean Connery in De Palma's 1987 film), a dirty cop who vows to turn his life around after exposing himself to Capone's violent, illegal and dangerous behavior. If De Palma plans to start shooting this thing in June, a cast should be announced fairly soon. Knowing De Palma, the flick will be packed with well-known names, and since Capone Rising will forever live in the shadows of its predecessor, it's definitely going to need some top-notch talent. This, finally, leads me to the big question: Who should play Al Capone and Jimmy Malone? Is De Niro too old to reprise the Capone role? I'll tell you one guy I'd like to see involved in either part -- Clive Owen. Tell me he's not perfect for this kind of material.

I think if they are going to do remakes, they should have Quentin Tarrantino redo Pulp Fiction with the Muppets.
Now THATS a remake we'd ALL wanna see!

A prequel to The Untouchable? Blasphemy!! But then again it's just bussiness in the land we call Moneywood, er, I mean Hollywood.
Depalma hasn't had a hit in years. Black Dahlia was ok, I loved the book. Femme Fatale was bad, and Mission to Mars was a failed mission.
The one thing I truly enjoy in Brian's films is his music colaboration with Ennio Marricone (from the spagetti western fame, and Sinema Paradiso)It brings a deeper human level to the movies.
Brian is smart and he will go the way of the Godfather, to make part 2 of a ganster movie a prequel. People will see this film and the following one (The Untouchable 3 with Elliot Ness' son fighting crime)The reason is this era looks great in films and people long for this simple story.
So I say: go ahead Depalma and do your prequel.
It could be worse: he may do Carry 2 starring Sissy Spaceship, or Undressed to Kill 2 with My cocaine. Or (God forbid)Blow Out 2 with John Traviatta.
So I guess this franchise is not that untouchable after all.

This is a bad, bad, bad idea. I mean, it's nothing new for bad ideas for prequels, sequels, and remakes to be floating around Hollywood, but this one has no merit whatsoever. And nobody BUT nobody can replace Sean Connery. Except for maybe George Lazeby, or Roger Moore, or... wait a minute? Haven't I said this in another post?
