Borat Opens Strongly in Limited Run

UPDATE: Borat's opening day box office was a whopping $8.9 million! That's over $10,630 per screen. Holy green thongs, that's fantastic! David Poland notes on his Hot Blog that with that opener, Borat is set to hit $22 to $27 million -- not bad for a film that cost $18 million. It could even end up beating out Santa Clause 3 -- and when you consider the diff in number of screens, that's pretty darn impressive. Poland predicts that with next weekend's expansion to 2,500 screens, Borat could easily top $35 million.Sacha Baron Cohen -- or at least, his alter-ego, Borat, doesn't have to worry just yet that, "If my film not success, I will be execute." Much of the buzz around his film (say it with me, folks) Borat: Cultural Learnings on America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan over the past week or two has been around awareness of the film and who exactly this Cohen guy is being rather low outside his fan base. In response, 20th Century Fox scaled back the initial release to 837 screens, initially targeting Cohen's fan base, who would be likely to hit theaters in droves opening weekend to see the strongly reviewed, much-buzzed about film. Fandango yesterday reported very strong ticket sales for the film on its opening day.
Not that Redmond, Washington is necessarily a barometer for the nation (the Microsoft town is considered somewhat "conservative" by Seattle standards, but in Middle America, this town would be seen as a hotbed of liberal activism), but we had a hard time scoring tickets anywhere in Seattle last night for my husband and mother-in-law to catch the film. I saw it in Toronto, and have been raving about it ever since, and they simply had to see it the day it opened. At the theater where we finally tracked down tickets, every screening of the film had sold out, and they added an 11:50PM screening to accommodate the flocks of Borat fans who were dying to see the film. That screening, my husband reported, was packed nearly full as well, and the audience response sounds like it was every bit as positive as it was in Toronto.
If the film does this well over the weekend, it could easily open with $10 million on 837 screens -- maybe more. Of course, Santa Clause 3 will technically beat Borat at the box office -- but it's also opening on over 3,000 screens. The bigger question is how Borat will track over the next few weeks. Once the initial frenzy of Cohen fans sees the film, will word-of-mouth be strong enough to keep the film going strong when it expands next week?
Did you rush out to see Borat last night? Let us know what the situation was in your town: Were screenings selling out? Was the house packed when you saw it? And how was the audience response? You, Cinematical readers, are our eyes and ears out there. Tell us how Borat is doing where you live.

Umm did you write this last night? Because according to the estimates, it made about $9 million on Friday alone. Not only that, it's quite clear now that it's gonna absolutely demolish Santa Clause 3

I was laughing my ass off when I found out Fox cut back the number of screens. Fox was apparently the only group of people that thought this movie wasn't gonna be a hit. Now they're claiming they were waiting for "word of mouth." Yeah sure, they're a bunch of corporate morons, just like the rest of the dimwits that run the corporate world.
But yeah, my friend was convinced it was gonna bomb cause of Fox's tracking numbers. I bought tickets several hours in advance, knowing it would sell out early. He didn't and the movie closed out. Fortunately the theatre opened many additional screenings at the same time, so I just went to his auditorium's showing.
But a good point of reference... when people are quoting the film, for example using the term "Niiiicee" instead of "Nice," and the movie hasn't even opened yet? Yeah, its gonna be a hit.

In Latvia, Riga, Borat was sold out for opening day. Yeah, the house was pretty much packed when I saw it but you know - all hardcore are going to see it now, let's see if it could keep up the hype in couple of weeks.

Fox is being run by morons. Dropping the Halo movie and scaling back the number of theaters for such an obvious hit on their hands. All the theaters were packed last night and the cinema i saw it at decided to cancel two other movie showings and split their two prints so that they could show multiple screenings. Smart move on their part, they obviously could tell this was going to be big.

You people calling FOX morons, please stop. FOX did the best thing they possible could. Borat was tracking marvelously on the west and east coast of the US, while not good at all in the "heartland". Now they instead get to use the great WOM and the positive press surrounding it's record breaking opening weekend (for a movie opening at less than 1000 screens) across 1500+ more screens next weekend. In the future, take a minute or two for contemplation before jumping to silly conclusions.

Limiting this movie has got to be THE worst decision made by a film studio this year. There was a huge media blitz leading to this film. Sacha Cohen was everywhere...he seemed to be on every morning news show (Good Morning America, Fox News, etc...), radio shows (Opie & Anthony), talk shows, and not to mention all of the stories coming out of Khasakstan about how pissed they are at him. I CANT SEE THIS MOVIE WITHOUT HAVING TO TRAVEL TO NYC (or at least close by). I went by my local theater yesterday and there was signs and lines of people looking for the movie as I was, but sure enough I got "Oh, we have no plans of showing that here"...WHAT THE F is that all about. There are signs, placards for the movie that have been up for weeks. Totally retarded. I hope they all get fired for this. Dumb Dumb Dump. And for the previous guy who said that this would not do well in the midwest...well I disagree...once they here Borat is a major bigot and hates jews...trust me, they will flock to the theaters.

Sorry, but FOX Corp is made up of a bunch of morons for putting this movie in limited release (what were they thinking?). My wife and I tried to see the movie last night but every show was sold out (except for a show after 10pm). We did go to a matinee today (which was packed). The audience enjoyed it quite a bit and the crowd was fairly diverse.

K, Pat. Lets looks a bit at Fox's track record shall we? Aside from their penchant nature to totally destorying any franchise their hand touches (Aliens, X-men, etc.) they have made three grossly ridiculous decisions in the past month or so. 1) Cancelling the release of Idiocracy just a week before its release and then releasing it in the most limited of all releases. Yes, it might be bad. But so was White Chicks and look where it went...it made money. They didn't advertise for it and they didn't support it at all...and what I understand, it wasn't as bad as they were thinking. 2)No matter how you look at it, they dropped the ball with Halo. You don't just drop an incredibly promising franchise that would make millions regardless of how new the director is. They lost the opportunity and some other distributors will reap the benefits. 3)I live in Texas, while not immediately at the "center" of the heartland, let me tell you that the growing popularity and hype this movie has garnered is unlike anything I have ever seen. Being worried about the Santa Claus 3 was a ridiculous excuse, if I have ever heard of one. I suspect that their were some personal politics that made their way into the decision. The movie had already had many advanced screenings with several big time critics speaking of its praises. Trailers were shown more than 3 months ago and the TV spots have been very well distributed. This was set to make an incredible killing but they hesitated and settled for a lot less. And yeah, it beat the Santa Claus 3 rather easily so far...and I'd imagine the reocrds on Monday won't be any different. So yes, Fox is runned by idiots and by one particular idiot, Rothman is the worst CEO that has ever touched this company and he needs to get the hell out. They need to learn to grow a pair, take calculated risks and stop being pussies and backing out at the last second. And by the way, several "conservative" chums of mine from East Texas saw it opening night and loved it...and they are way out of the mainstream. Just thought I'd put that out their in case you thought only Liberals were going to see this movie and that people in the "Heartland" didn't know jack shit was going on. Come on! Get with it!

We live on Long Island NY in an up-scale University town. Hard core fans that we are , we and our two tween age children attempted to see Borat on opening night , but the only tickets available were after 11 PM.
Today , we were able to get tickets only for the 5:45 show , 2 hours early , and were advised to get there at 5 if we wanted good seats. The film was as good as I expected and was well recieved by the adoring audience. Their was a true cross section of veiwers ranging from teens with 40 somthing parents in tow , to the expected 18 -35 group , and an unexpected number about 1/3rd of folks over 50 , well over 50.

what else can you expect from the studio that cancelled Futurama?
We went at 6pm to the 1 theatre that was showing Borat within 40 miles of Santa Cruz, CA and the 8pm show was sold out.
At 6:30pm the 10:15pm show was sold out.
They had to add a 12:20am show just to stop the rioting!
Way to go FOX, you could have made SO MUCH MORE MONEY if you weren't run by a bunch of manatees!
Now, instead you will have to compete against Will Farrel next week... brilliant!

I saw it last night (Friday) at 12:30AM in Burbank, CA and it was PACKED and evverybody loved it. Really not sure why Fox reduced it to 800 screens, but I can only hope it was to create an even bigger buzz about it selling out and not because they don't have faith in this film because IMO it has legs.

I saw the Movie Sat. Night at The Muvico in Baltimore. You had to be there 1 hour before to get seats together! I t was showing on 4 screens all night and my friend Shana who waorks at Muvico said every show has sold out all weekend! Each theatre at Muvico holds 600. When we left the 7:25 movie the line had to be at least 150 people long.

Everyone I know who tried to see it in New York this weekend gave up rather than wait in the cold in a line around the block. So I just told them about the two funny scenes that they haven't already seen on You Tube, and that was that.

I couldn't frickin' see it Friday night because EVERY theatre (all 3 of them) in the immediate Seattle area had sold out all of their shows. I ended up making it into the Metro for a 630 Saturday showing, and believe it or not, there was actually a dude who came in costume as Borat.
The hotel room scene with Borat and Azarat made me laugh til I cried. What a great movie. I wonder how it will hold up to repeat viewings?
