Daniel Radcliffe's Equus Poster
Filed under: Casting, Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand
It's old news by now that Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe will be appearing nude on stage in London during a production of Equus. However, we've recently come across this poster for the upcoming play, and it's hard not to find it just a little bit disturbing. They've even made Radcliffe's nipples into the horse's eyes, and it'll be hard to look at Harry Potter the same way again. The play is about a boy who really loves his horse, and Radcliffe decided to take the role to prove that he could play other parts besides the boy wizard. There is no doubt that Radcliffe has been offered plenty of other acting roles that would show off his debatable acting skills, but this just really seems off the charts. I recently saw the film Driving Lessons with Rupert Grint who plays Ron Weasley, and he does a great job in the film without dropping a stitch. Plus, with Equus being only a London stage play, won't that limit the amount of people who are going to see what Radcliffe's range is? I guess his parents are supportive of this move, which seems hard to believe, but to each his own. It will be very interesting to see what the public reaction will be to this play. Our prediction: Either shock and empty theater seats, or Potter fans come to see Harry in a whole new light.

Anyone who doesn't think Radcliffe can act should see his episode of the Ricky Gervais comedy, Extras. He is hilarious playing against type as a sex crazed young adult. It gave me new found respect for him.

There are ways to show your range other than doing nasty things like this. I wish we had more Cary Grants and Clark Gables and the like around today :(

Equuus is good play. I'm not sure what you mean by a boy who "loves" his horse, there's no beastiality involved, although there is horse-blinding and girl-on-boy sexuality that gets mixed with a lot of horse/god imagery. Maybe Daniel just wants to have a career in the legitimate theater after his child star days have passed, a part like this seems to be like a good way to transition into drama, provided he's any good.

Has anyone commenting even read about the play? It's not that "nasty", though it does deal with disturbing subject matter. It's considered to be a modern classic play...

I find it both interesting and saddening to find there are actually people out there that consider taking your clothes off in front of other people "sick". As an actor it's obvious to me that Daniel Radcliffe is attempting to elongate his career in much the same way that Ann Hathaway is attempting. Going from the Princess Diaries to a topless brokeback mountaineer. People are sooo sadly close minded. All this judgement and I'm willing to bet that those casting stones, most likely have no idea what the play is about or what acting as an art even is. Perhaps those people are spending to much time thinking of those black & white movie actors who might not be shedding any clothing on stage in a "sick" manor, but that didn't keep them from doing lots of other things behind closed doors deemed "sick" by the public. Things like LOADS of gay sex?!?! Why does everyone get all bent out of shape about a little dick on stage. No pun intended.

When I heard that Dan was going to be performing in Equus, I bought the play and read it completely with Dan in mind. I have to tell you, though I found it disturbing (especially the last scenes), I found it to be quite a fantastic piece of work. I kept comparing certain scenes with how he has acted in the HP films and it helped my mind adjust to A: Dan playing the character and B: He's not a boy anymore but a young man with a strong sense of what he wants his profession to be. We've seen such a range of emotion from him in the films (and OotP hasn't even come out yet), I think of him in Equus as more emotion times 10. I wish I was able to go to London to see this play and watch Dan prove to everyone that he can transition from playing Harry Potter to much more dramatic adult characters. Bravo, Dan!

I don't know about anyone else but I think he will do an amazing job in this play. Plus after we saw that bath scene in HP 4 we knew that a full on nude scene wouldn't be far behind. I am looking forward to seeing this play on youtube once it starts preduction because you know it's going to be there. And comparativley speaking I wonder how big he really is.

I live in the US and I am traveling to London to see Daniel in Equus. I've watched him grow up as Harry Potter. I can't wait to watch his movie December's Boys(where he plays an orphin)and I am really looking forward to seeing him do something completely different. No, children should not see Equus, it is very disturbing (watch the original movie), but I want to see Daniel do something edgy. As for the nudity, it only seems that people in America find this disturbing. Grow-up please. If you are a true fan of Daniel you will support him on this. And yes, his parents do support him on everything he does. So if it isn't a problem for them, why should it be a problem for you?

That is one creepy looking poster (above)
The one with the horse is very artsy looking.
Smart kid moving on to new adventures. Hopefully he won't get stuck in the lost child star pile.

I just heard about the play yesterday afternoon, and i will admit i was a little shocked to hear that Harry Potter was going to be preforming nude on stage for a Broadway play even though he did a partial in the goblet of fire i still didn't see it coming for a while!!!! But i look at it this way, he has been portrade as a child star since he was 13 yrs old and he will also play Harry Potter till he is 21!!!! So why is is such a big deal to people that he has done some rearranging in his acting career to do some nude photos!!!???? What actor hasn't????? I think Daniel is tired of being treated as a child because of his role as Harry Potter and if this is his way of making people see that he is not a child anymore than so be it!!!!!He is a great actor and will go far in his acting career and i hopefully will go and see the play or watch it on youtube because you know something this (in the words of closed minded people all over the world)"NASTY" will be on there!!!!

i respect that daniel wants to do the play, although i think the dramatic change is unnecessary. he could have started a little slower, he is only 17. but if that is what he wants to do, then im glad hes sure about it. i believe the hardest part about accepting it is that we have had the harry potter image drilled into us. we ahve seen him get older on film and its different to see him do something so out of that element, i have been watching him in the movies and i beleive he is a great actor, so- good luck dan.
