Spider-Man 3 Trailer! Woo!
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Exhibition, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
Well folks, the time is upon us: Spider-Man 3 is looming large and we're going to be under a whole mess of Spidey merchandising and advertising. I don't know about you, but I can't wait. Spider-Man has been the torch-bearer for all Marvel films, and the third flick in the franchise will certainly be one of this summer's biggest box office takes. With that in mind, here are my thoughts from the freshly released Spider-Man 3 trailer (yay!):
- Love seeing Spider-Man fans on the streets. The relationship between Spider-Man and the public is one of the most interesting in Marvel, and it's cool seeing kids in Spidey costumes cheering him on.
- Haha, there is a great moneyshot of Spidey posing in front of a flag. Feel the patriotism swell!
- If you ever thought the Sandman was a cheesy villain, and wondered why they chose him for the movie, wonder no more. Wow, does he look like a fun villain, and the CGI is performing marvelously for him. But seriously ... Sandman killing Uncle Ben?
- I've gone on record as being worried about the Venom suit. Move me officially into the excited column after watching the darkness creep over Peter. Stan Lee would be proud. I still want the giant white spider on the front, but I'm willing to give.
- As expected, it is flashy, full of pretty CGI, and lots of camera cuts. Thematically we're probably looking at a much darker film, but if you liked the first two (and who didn't) this trailer is certainly sure to excite. More of the same, but better.
P.S. I still don't like adding in Gwen.

Still no Venom shot... They are probably holding on to that one pretty tight.

I have problems with this trailer.
1. The dialogue is...bad. Not just bad--really bad. "Everybody needs help sometimes, Peter; even Spider-man."
"The suit...where'd it come from? The power...it feels good."
"What does it matter to you, anyway?" "Everything!"
That kind of stuff.
2. The CGI. Is terrible. I know they have a new effects guy on this one, and the effects probably aren't done yet, but I saw better CG in the Ghost Rider trailer. Honestly.
3. Spider-Man looks far too cartoony--even in the live-action shots. This film looks 90'sish in the worst possible sense.
4. Some of the shots are pitifully bad; especially the last shot. It's just hokey...and not in the "Sam Raimi is rocking the campy hokeyness" way. Hokey in the inexcusably-bad way.
I really hope this is attributable to bad editing, etc. because I was rather hyped to see this film. Now, notsomuch.

"The power. It feels so good, to let it take you away.", or something along those lines. Not cheesy really. Not to me at least. But your mileage may vary.
As for the CGI and whatnot, it looked solid to me. Same with the cuts. Looked completely solid for a film that still several months off.
I guess if you're looking for reasons to be dissapointed, you'll find them. Or maybe it's just that I'm not an CGI expert, nor have I ever been to film school. I just know what I like, and I liked what I saw in the trailer.

Good job getting the trailer up so quickly, MB. Me, I thought the clip was pretty damn awesome.

Count me in as one of those who cannot wait to see this film. My kids watched it with me, and my 7YO son shouted out "Cool! It's Sandman!" and "Wow, it looks just like my Ultimate Spider-Man game!"
Of course, they want it in theaters NOW.
I thought the CGI looked good. The film seems dark thematically, which is cool by me. I'll be there.

This does indeed look awesome, although I still think it's a lot of plot threads to tie up in a single film.
Still, I'll be there. Any Brits wanna geek out with me on May 4, let me know!

Incredible trailer! Tells you everything but gives away nothing. The series gets more and more complicated and the effects don't get appear to get in the way of a great story. Spiderman's vunerability has always been his greatest gift as a character.

If you visit the link I'm about to give you, you will be priby to a VERY LARGE collection of Spider-Man 3 spoilers - and the information on how they fit in with what you see in the trailer. They were published months ago, and now, they are corroborated by what we al see on screen... Makes for a great read. I know you all want to read this...

Stan Lee had nothing to do with Venom. Would Steve Ditko be proud? He had as much to do with Venom as Lee did, which is to say zilch. But somehow names like Ditko and Kirby don't pop up as much in your posts.
There are in-depth interviews with Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Gil Kane and others that all corroborate a very different image of Lee than the one apologists like you & Kevin Smith are always touting. Lee himself sometimes slips and admits to things that have been on the record for years (like having nothing to do with the creation of Galactus or the Silver Surfer--see below). Every time you champion the guy in one of your posts, you're misguiding readers and rewriting comics history. Apply some of the basic tenets of journalism to Stan Lee's claims of creatorship to these characters. Check sources. The actual FF pencil pages exist, you can compare Kirby's pre-Lee pages with the published versions. In many cases, Lee just inserted hipster jargon and Willie Lumpkin references to Kirby's complete stories. Is that "creating"? In the case of Galactus & his herald, Stan's suggestion to Kirby pre-story was this: "The FF battle a fantastic new villain from outer space!" Kirby then crafted a two-issue story arc with the characters he created that went on to become classics. Stan himself admits to looking at the pages and saying "Who's this guy on the surfboard?"
It's worth noting that Stan Lee never created a single memorable character once Kirby & Ditko left Marvel 36 years ago. His last batch of characters for his own enterprise (in which he was partnered with a convicted felon) included such cringe-inducing characters as "Ninja-Man" and a Wolverine ripoff whose name I've mercifully forgotten. And even those characters were co-created by artists who then saw their names erased from the project! (Lee recruited some of them by saying "I'll make you the next Jack Kirby!"--a claim he followed through with, as they subsequently saw their credits removed and their profits minimized.)
The guy wrote some very funny (but very dated) hipster jargon 40 years ago. His greatest character creation--and the only one to which he can lay legitimate claim--is "Stan Lee", public figure.

As for a Venom shot if you go to Google.com and go to Image and type in Venom is Spiderman 3 there is a picture of him. You will know it when you see it. I don't know if it's offical but it looks like it could be what he looks like. Check it out.

To the second poster: The dialogue is just fine. Quit stretching for something to complain about.
To the third poster: For a movie that is still many many months from being released, the CGI looks great.

Is it a possibility that Venom's going to appear at the end of Spidey-3 so that we have something to look forward in Spidey-4 (plus possibly Misterio? and where the heck is Lizard??)

I think the trailer gives away too much.
Most trailers do.
Its way more rad to go to the cinema and be shocked by extra stuff you didn't know was even in the film.
Or to finally have the answer to questions you had.
What does venom look like? Wait till the film reveals it.
Its a good trailer but i think the teaser is better because it just builds anticipation.
I can understand CGI concerns, only really the shot with the flag... it looks kind of odd.
I am so stoked to see it.
they better not back out of making more after this like they did with x-men. Anyone else remember talks of up to 6 x-men films?
Anyone have any idea how many spider-man films still to come?

Yeah, I am a little disappointed with this trailer...the obvious one...no Venom. But like other mentioned, the CGI is pretty sub par compared to the others and the dialogue is oddly placed. This is actually a pretty crappily editted trailer...but...one should keep in mind that the CGI is most likely not finished yet. CGI goes through many stages and its likely, not everything has been smoothed over yet.
As far as a no show for Venom, I'm hoping they deliver on the final trailer and not pull a Godzilla mistake. Do these guys fail to realize people will be able to see him in Toy aisles before the theater much like Godzilla was revealed? And the way I see it...this could be a major reason why Godzilla wasn't taken as greatly as he should have...
They need to show some Venom in his own cinematic atmosphere to pump people up more about this film...if only for a glimpse.

First of all, the CGI is WAY under par. Obviously it's not finished yet though, I mean we are talking about MAY of next year.
But more importantly, "Still don't like adding Gwen"? Why on earth not! She's a great character, even if some of her best story arcs already got jacked by MJ. And you should at LEAST be excited about her addition because Bryce Dallas Howard > Kirsten Dunst... in like every way imaginable.

I never post things but I just wanted to tell you all something. You are not going to see VENOM in ANY tailer. There is no reason to. Everyone knows he is in the movie so from a marketing standpoint why show anything. Rami aint stupid, he will keep everyone on pins and needles dieing to see him and wait for the revealing until the movie. No point or reason to do it before hand. As for just seeing him at the very end, nope. Look at the trailer and toward the end you will see spidey on a taxi....in red suit and taxi supported by black webbing and his left arm has claw/rip marks....so they got a beat on each other in this movie.

Wow,
I was freeze framing to point out various characters to my gf and her kid, and one of the shots near the end has the black costume with a white spider on the chest. All of the images of Peter in the suit has a dark spider on the chest.
Either, I am seeing things or that was a flash of Vemon. If it was Venom, then it looks exactly like Spidey. :( No big mouth. No big teeth. No big slobbering tongue.

I was underwhelmed by this trailer and my feelings about it run concurrently with Corey's.
In fact, I have always had problems with the Spider-Man movies basically because the dialogue isn't great, the acting isn't great, the story (or perhaps the way it has been told so far) is average, and the only thing that was truly amazing about 1 and 2 was the action. So good in fact I am still willing to rate 2 as one of the best action flicks around.
However, this trailer hasn't gotten me excited with the same kind of balls out action 2 had. And if anything, the poorer aspects of the franchise seem to be getting worse. Going by how much I was cringing at what I just saw I'm not going to raise my hopes.
Note this is my OPINION. Please don't feel you have to defend the movie or trailer as it may be. I'll quite happily eat my hat if things turn out.
