More Godfather On the Way?
Filed under: Drama, Paramount, RumorMonger, Fandom, DIY/Filmmaking, Remakes and Sequels
Most die hard fans of the Godfather trilogy don't consider it a trilogy per se, they like to think the third installment was more like bad salad dressing poured over a meal that was already tasty to begin with. Regardless, it is what it is and, for a long time now, folks wondered whether or not the popular Godfather saga would continue on screen. Well, thanks in part to a hit video game and Mark Winegardner's two books (The Godfather Returns and The Godfather's Revenge), Paramount wants to bring everyone's favorite dysfunctional family back to the big screen ... and fast.
You'll remember that Winegardner was chosen by the estate of the late Mario Puzo (original Godfather author) to continue the legacy, pen more books and hopefully tap into our obsession for everything Corleone. Paramount snatched up the rights to both of Winegardner's books awhile back, and now (according to Moviehole) inside studio sources say the first film could get underway within the next year. Oh, but here's the rub: The Godfather Returns takes place between The Godfather and The Godfather II. So, with the original cast way too old to reprise their roles, they will have to attach new faces to play familiar characters. As one studio spy put it, "I guess you'll notice it about as much as Brandon Routh stepping in for Christopher Reeve in Superman Returns ..." As the old clichè goes, "I have a bad feeling about this ..."
As for The Godfather's Revenge? Well, that one takes place after the first two films, but before the third, and revolves around a plot to assassinate U.S. President Jimmy Shea -- obviously inspired by those rumors floating around JFK's death. It will be interesting to see how they approach both films -- do they attach a hot young director and gear them toward a younger audience, one that might not be as familiar with the original flicks? And who will play Michael Corleone? Any suggestions?

How could anyone be cast as Michael Corleone except for Al Pacino.
It not that it is a seperate character anymore... many people see them as the same person (well not literally of course).
Imagine making a new Rocky movie with another actor playing the part of Rocky other than Stallone... not a good idea.

this sounds like the worst idea i have ever heard in the movie business. who is going to direct these blasphemic films? theres one thing for sure, they will not stack up and whoever tries is doomed to failure.
and for the record.. people that love the godfather do not automatically dislike the third film. i for one love it and feel that it successfully puts an end to the greatest film trilogy of all time.
when i first started reading this article i reacted with a "meh" sure, they keep going with new characters.. hell even andy garcia could reprise his role from the 3rd film and be an ageing corleone boss dealing with fresh new blood. but upon reading that they will be plopping these new films in between I and II and then between II and III ?!?!?! what are they thinking? sweet lord it must not take much to be a movie executive, because even an idiot should be able to realize that this idea is doomed for serious failure.

CG the entire film. If they're going make another Godfather movie might as well piss on the entire franchise and get it over with.

Firstly this is an absolutely stupid idea. Secondly it is plain dumb to have anyone besides Al Pacino as Michael. Thirdly stuart trann said, many people including myself respect the third film quite a lot. It had a perfect Shakespearean touch to it with Al giving his best performance ever. Full stop.

A cinematic version of The Godfather returns and The Godfater's Revenge are excellent ideas. According to the book Michael Corleone has aged due to his diabetes. With today's computer technology I think it could work. There will be challenges, but Al Pacino could pass for 50 ish. No other actor would work. Flahbacks will be solid with author Winegardner's excellent portrayal of the Corleone's from early Michael years to early Sonny and Tom Hagen years. I predict a hit both critically and box office.
