Zodiac Trailer Looks Good

My main interest in David Fincher's films is the cinematography. The director's vision is pretty stylized, and he tends to use the best of the best DP's in order to get that vision on the screen. I'd personally like to see him work with Darius Khondji again (he shot both Se7en and Panic Room), but I'm pretty excited with his choice to work with Harry Savides for his latest thriller, Zodiac. Anyway, the trailer for the new film has just gone up on Yahoo! Australia and I'm happy to say it looks really good. And I mean looks. Not just the cinematography, but also the production design, too. As for the film itself, I'm not too sure. I just can't get into Jake Gyllenhaal as a serious actor after Brokeback Mountain, even if he was amazing in his less-appreciated but better film Jarhead. Oh, and I'm not that crazy about Chlöe Sevigny these days, either.My personal, cynical opinions aside, Zodiac received a mixed reception from AICN contributors last month, and the less favorable comments have me hesitant with my anticipation. At least it has to be better than Alexander Bulkley's recent version of the story, right? Fincher's film doesn't have Rory Culkin, for instance. It has Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey, Jr. I guess, I'll just have to wait until March to see for myself.
As for Fincher's next film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, I hope the director knows what he's doing with newbie DP Claudio Miranda.

I don't know, it seemed as if every one of the actors was half alseep while delivering their dialogue. Rather boring trailer if you ask me, and the music was pretty strange too.

I haven't watched the trailer yet, so I can't really comment on that. I'm just not sure I understand why "Brokeback Mountain" is making it tough for you to get into Gyllenhaal as a serious actor. "Brokeback" wasn't exactly a madcap comedy or anything.

Brokeback may not have been intended as a comedy, but I thought Gyllenhaal was pretty ridiculous in it. Part of it had to do with that mustache, but part also had to do with his performance in some scenes. Don't get me wrong, I do think the film is good, though not as good as it is given credit for, but I didn't always buy Gyllenhaal. At least he wasn't the worst performer in the film, though. That would be Anne Hathaway.

Sorry to be a fact nazi, but Khondji didn't exactly shoot Panic Room; he was switched out with Conrad W. Hall partway through pre-production.
I liked the trailer by the way, and if the tone of it is an accurate sell then all that noise about Fincher repeating himself should by rights go away.
I guess I'm a little disappointed that it doesn't look more digital; I was hoping that, between them, Mann and Fincher would be forging this new aesthetic that makes all celluloid look as quaint as the kind of chalky poster-paint Technicolor of things like Wizard of Oz. Mann has already done it for me I guess.

Funny how no other reviewer has ever written any critique that shares your point of view. I think you better get yourself a more suitable occupation.
Jake Gyllenhaal is a very talented accomplished actor who is appreciated by all of Hollywood's elite movers and leading movie makers. Your review of Jake Gyllenhaal and of Brokeback Mountain and of Anne Hathaway just demonstrates that you don't know much about movies. Get another job, this column is a waste of space.

I totally agree with Julie. Gyllenhaal's acting skill is a cut far above many of his peers. I think maybe you really do need to get another job.
