Tobey Ditches Spider-Man 4?

While Sony and Marvel would love to continue the Spider-Man franchise past this May's third installment, there's a good chance they'll be doing so without Spidey himself, Tobey Maguire. We already know Kirsten Dunst probably won't return, James Franco recently threw in his own thoughts on a fourth film and Marvel exec Kevin Feige told MTV that "there will be many more Spider-Man films to come" -- but the big question remains: Are additional sequels worth it if the trilogy's main stars don't return? Would it really be a Spider-Man film without Sam Raimi or Tobey Maguire?
When presented with these questions, Maguire told Starpulse News that, unless a miracle occurs, he's done slinging webs for now. Says Maguire, "This might be a good place to stop -- I am not tied contractually to any more Spider-Man movies. I am not completely closed to the idea of another one if it made sense but I would say the odds were in favor of this being the last one". But what exactly does that mean -- "if it made sense?" If what made sense? The stories are there, the fans are certainly there -- could Maguire be alluding to, dare I say it, the money? If so, then I imagine whatever new contract is drawn up would have to, not only provide him with a gigantic paycheck, but also be for only one film. There's no way this dude is committing himself to another three, and he's probably going to see where his co-stars and director stand before any final decisions are made.
Would you support a Spider-Man 4 if the original cast doesn't return?

Well, I think I'll wait to really mull that over until after I've seen the third film. But I think a lot also depends on whether Sam Raimi returns.
If the studio planned to hand the franchise, with an all new cast, over to someone like a Brett Ratner, then no, I probably wouldn't support it.

"if it made sense" is Hollywood speak for "if they offer me enough money"

I'm ready to watch more without Raimi and the cast if another quality director is picked.
I'd prefer more practical effects too. I have not really cared for much of the CGI in the two films so far. However, the task at hand is to find another Christopher Nolan to fill the shoes of Raimi when he leaves.
Had Spidey returned years before what we were ultimately treated to, I think we could have had Dabney Coleman as JJJ, Robert Guillome (sic) as Joe "Robbie" Robertson, Savallas as The Kingpin, Charlton Heston as Uncle Ben, etc. So, with that having been said, I'm sure we can find a new and talented cast to replace the current great cast when the time comes.
Regardless, Bruce Campbell should get the nod to be Mysterio.

I hate pretty much everyone attached to the movies right now, and Tobey Maguire fails miserably at one of the most miscast roles ever.

Batman has done it. Superman has done it. 007 has done it. I can imagine new people with Spider-man. However the one glaring problem about Spider-man compared to Batman and 007 is that their are locked main characters and sub-characters aside from the hero. Yeah 007 can change and he really stands alone with whoever is cast for his Bond girl and it works ok. Same goes for Batman. He is the main character with others that can be easily replaced a la 007. Superman was obviously harder to do simply because there were more central characters to cast besides Supes like Lois Lane and Lex. So the same might happen with Spidey. Where Tobey might be replaced, it might prove a problem in casting other central characters (such as MJ, Gwen Stacey, Harry, etc...assuming they all are still living by the end of Spider-man 3). Will it work? Possibly. Will it be better?...well, we went through 2 throw away Batmans until we found Christian Bale...so, dunno.

If they took a new direction with the franchise like a series based on Marvel Knights, Ultimate Spider-man or based it upon another life changing event in Spidey's history then they could pull off more movies with a new cast. Or you could mix combine all the ideas and use Jake Gyllenhaal as Spidey falling in love with X3's Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde (Ultimate spiderman) while fighting all new villains or people who have taken up the role of a former villain (like Venom or Hobgoblin). I think a darker Spider-man movie would work well. I've recently read the Marvel Knights Spider-man arcs 'Down Among The Dead Men', 'Venomous' and 'The Last Stand' and i gotta say, seeing Spidey break down and get beaten up a load of times was good. Hey, it worked for Batman, why not Spidey.
I know Spider-man 3 is supposed to be darker but i don't think it'll be really 'dark'.
Worst case scenario, we get a clone saga movie which sets up sequals based on a spider-man from another universe.

Thats true, I forgot about Ben Reilly....but that would really be pushing it and most probably wouldn't like the switch...oh, but I forgot he was a clone of Parker....so it wouldn't really matter I guess.

How about a post-POTTER Daniel Radcliffe?

I like what Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire, and this crew have done...but movie series usually run out of steam after the third film (and in many cases, the second). But Batman was resurrected very well after a chain of big (but mostly awful) films, the Terminator came back after a decade, so I'm sure Spider-man will continue and maybe a new creative approach will be cool to see. That said, I think there is an equal chance that it could be awful if the wrong people get into it.

Spiderman would not be the same without tobey maguire and cristine dunst. It would drive me carzy! How could you even do that? How could you change the actors? It would ruind the whole series if the old cast would be replaced.
