Awards Watch: Critics Schmitics, Who Do You Want Nominated?
Filed under: Awards, Hold the 'Fone
But let's not forget the honorable mentions on these lists, because they're definitely award contenders as well. My personal faves are Ryan Gosling, who gives a harrowing performance in 'Half Nelson' as an inspiring junior-high teacher who just so happens to be a crack addict and Meryl Streep, who never needs a rabbit's foot to get nominated for anything. As the deliciously wicked editrix in 'The Devil Wears Prada' she is so fabulous, how could she not get a nod?
My pal Angie finally got her wish for Martin Scorsese to make a list, with both New York and Boston giving Marty the nod as best director. Of course, he's THE New York director (well, in addition to Allen and Lee) and he movie is set in Boston, so that had to help. But I echo Angie's sentiments that the man needs his Oscar gold.
In the end, I say critics, schmitics (OK, I already said that in my subject, but it bears repeating). Who do YOU think deserves a Golden Globe/Oscar nomination this year?

Michael C. Hall from "Dexter" and the whole ensemble from "Dexter" were missed and dissed!! What a travesty!! The critics and judges did an AWFUL JOB OF SELECTION! Most shows on standard television stations are "CRAP"!!

I CAN'T BELIEVE THE BIGGEST SNUB OF THE YEAR "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN DEAD MAN'S CHEST WASN'T NOMINATED FOR BEST MUSICAL OR COMEDY!!! I GUESS 1.1 BILLION DOLLARS WORLDWIDE (AND THE FACT THIS MOVIE SAVED THE MOVIE BUSINESS IN GENERAL'S REAR-END), DOESN'T MEAN JACK SPARROW SQUAT TO THE FOREIGN PRESSS!! YET, THEY DOUBLE UP ON EVERYEARS "ACTOR"? LEONARDO AND EASTWOOD--AGAIN!! THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA HOWEVER, NOMINATED IN THAT CATAGORY! JUDAS PRIEST, JUST GOES TO SHOW, THE SUITS THAT PICK THESE MOVIES AND ACTORS DON'T KNOW SQUAT! ALSO THE FACT ON 07-07-06, PEOPLE IN THE USA BROKE BOX-OFFICE RECORDS FOR THE MOST TICKETS SOLD FOR POTC2! I GUESS THE PUBLIC (WHO PAYS TO SEE THE PICS), DON'T KNOW WHAT THEIR DOING AND THE FOREIGN PRESS DOES? BULLOCKS!! THERE IS NO REASON TO HAVE DICAPRIO AND EASTWOOD NOMINATED IN THE SAME CATORGORIES TWO TIMES! JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW STUPID "THE HIGH SCHOOL PROM" AND POPULARITY CONTESTS ARE! FOREIGN PRESS, YOU STINK AND THEY GIVE PRESIDENT BUSH BAD PRESS!! I RENTED "PRADA", THE OTHER DAY, WAS AS USUAL, DISSAPOINTED! IF STREEP, (WHO'S KNOWN FOR BEING A B**** ANYWAY), IF THAT'S SUPERIOR ACTING, THEN YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN ME IN A NASTY MOOD!! I COULD HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB! HAIL TO HELEN MIRREN, SHE'LL PREVAIL AND HOPEFULLY THE BEST ACTOR EVER---- JOHNNY DEPP!! IF THERE IS A GOD? PIRATES WAS A FABULOUS MOVIE, WE DON'T CARE WHAT THE STUPID CRITICS SAID, (OBVIOUSLY)! WE CAME OUT IN TRUCKLOADS THAT WEEKEND IN JULY, FOR A DARN GOOD REASON!!

I reallydo believe that Dreamgirls is Beyonce's breakout role as a serious actress. I would be happy for her is she won for best actress in a musical or comedy based solely on her acting and not the fact that she's popular already.

I think Sean Penn should have received some consideration for his portrayl of the 'infamous' Louisiana governor even though the movie had it's shortcomings. Released too early for the memories of the Hollywood set to retain, or maybe he's not on the 'hot list' this year. Overlooked again this year will be Scosorce; that's a given.

I can't believe Dexter and Heros didn't get any kind of a nomination. What's going on, doesn't these people really watch TV?

I think Pirates, Flags of Our Fathers, or Superman should get motion picture and def Depp for Actor. Not sure yet for animated because I haven't seen Cars yet but based on accounts and Larry that should win Animated. Didn't see Dreamgirls and not many women stand out for me this year. I am exoecting to be dissapointed by the awards though. Last year was a travesty. Star Wars 3 was the end of a big finale and one of the greatest movies ever, it should have won motion picture event of the year. And Hayden Christensen serioualy grew from his stoic performance in Episode 2. Wow, it's been a year and I'm still ticked about SW getting that shaft. In fact last year none of the films in the best movie category belonged there. Oh well, I expect dissapointment from the decision makers but i wont be losing sleep over it
