Brittany Murphy Checks in to The White Hotel
Filed under: Drama, Casting, Newsstand
It's not the type of role you would expect to find Brittany Murphy in, but I suppose the girl is set on trying some new things. Apparently, the actress is in negotiations to star in The White Hotel, an adaptation of the D.M. Thomas novel. It's taken a whole lot of time to finally bring White Hotel to the big screen -- at one time, folks like Barbra Streisand, Meryl Streep, Isabella Rosellini and Nicole Kidman were in talks to star. Just the fact that Murphy has now entered the equation (after all those fantastic names disappeared) goes to show that either folks were desperate for a female name (any name!) or Murphy really really impressed the right people. Which one do you think is most likely true?
Story follows an opera singer (Murphy) who looks to Sigmund Freud for help in post-World War I Vienna after she's haunted by dreams of a white hotel. Together, they begin to decipher those dreams, which include premonitions of the future and the Holocaust. Simon Monjack will direct off his own script, and there's currently no other casting announcements. Since Murphy grew up in New Jersey, her Jersey/NYC accent usually cuts through her dialogue and, more often that not, it takes away from the performance -- except when it's intentional. However, I had the chance to see a different side of Murphy recently in The Dead Girl. Although she once again took on a tough-girl role, her accent was gone and thus I enjoyed her on screen presence more than I have in the past ... even if her performance was a little too much. With that said, I have a feeling the girl has something special in her -- but will we ever see that special something? That's the question.

Brittany Murphy has SOME acting abilities. I think she has chosen roles which were easier to obtain, instead of looking for an Oscar nod. But, if you have heard her sing, you might understand why they chose her to play an opera singer. She in fact, is fairly talented (more so than some Britney's who are actually paid to SING). I think it will be a great choice if the script has any edge to it. Just think about Jennifer Anniston in The Good Girl. Not a great movie, but it did earn Jennifer some respect for being able to play something other than "Rachel"

Brittany Murphy is a cutie and I will watch her in anything and everything she is in. She can sing and I believe she is in the process of putting out an album.

I think that would be an interesting role. Do not have time for many movies but that is one storyline that would get me to the theater. Like to see comebacks and she hasn't got much attention for awhile would be good to see her grab the spotlight again.

Maybe they have just decided to go for a different angle; more entertainment than artsy.

She just turned down a role as my love slave so she is free to do whatever she wants.

Brit is one of my faves, And I love all houses that are white, also blue ones.I think she is not even close to the size of a hgouse, but still am glad she got the part, maybe they plan on putting her in a fat suit? Or maybe just good computer graphics? She is white though, so they at least got that right.

I saw Ms Murphy on Broadway years ago in "A View From The Bridge" by Arthur Miller with Anthony LaPaglia. She was wonderful. She has yet to impress me as much in any movie, and I think it's due to the roles offered to her. She is a very capable actress.

Actually. I've always been pretty impressed by her. Remember "Girl, Interrupted", anyone? Daisy was a really depressing, serious, GOOD role and she performed it admirably. It'll be interesting to see her true potential.

Why would her NJ/NY accent take away from the performance?? Excuse me? WTF does THAT mean?

I love Brittany Murphy. ever since I saw her in Girl Interrupted..I have gone to see all her movies. I believe she is a mesmorizing actress. There is something about her that keeps you transfixed. To think she was chosen because none of the "big" stars wanted the role is just so sad...she should have been considered first if you ask me. Brittany if you read this...just know..I think that you are the best actress out there today!

I grew up with Brittany in NJ and am proud to say that. I haven't talked to her in about 5 years, guess she's too busy, but her accent is just as normal as everyone on TV. And she does have an amazing singing voice so rock on. Can't wait to see if this makes it all the way to the big screen.

Would like to see her spread eagled and naked. I have the feeling she's not a natural blonde.

She definitely 'plays for the other team' - that whole affair with some guy from Brooklyn was a front.
She's a carpet-cleaner.

I, too, think Brittany Murphy has good acting abilities. I coincidentally caught a movie of hers with Dakota Fanning, "Uptown Girls," and thought she was quite capable in it. I didn't notice any accent that detracted from her performance whatsoever. I believe that, as she is cast in different kinds of roles, she is an up-and-coming genuine star. Just keep plugging along, Brittany; I wish you success.

She is an o.k. actress. She isn't very good-looking without that dyed blonde hair but at least she has some talent.

I hope this will be the big role that will get her an oscar. She is the cutest and most beautiful actress since Nattile Wood. Her N.J. accident makes her even cuter. I will go to all her movies, no matter what she plays. That movie with the kid and the pig was great.

Brittany is 'my girl' when it comes to the slate of talented young acresses out there. She has shown alot of ability from playing the completely derranged to the utterly cute, but has not had overwhelming roles to display what a mature range she has. Her voice over work has been fantastic, and I've been keeping my fingers crossed for her to get meatier roles - but I think she's been put in with the "party all the time" other young peer entertainers..i.e... Tara Reid and she's gotten lost, instead of like Maggie Gyllanhall of which she could have roles similar to. I hope this role is a noticable one for Brittany, and a step up for her craft and talent. And for the love of GOD, I hope she doesn't mess up this opportunity.

JMS and JOE...real intelligent comments there. NOT!
She is a very attractive and talented actress/singer and should do well in this film. Thank goodness they never cast Barbra Streisand in this role.
