Premiere Gets Brave: Knocks 20 Classics as "Overrated"
Filed under: Classics, Fandom, Newsstand, Lists
I haven't picked up an issue of Premiere Magazine in quite some time, but a friend of mine recently recommended I visit the publication's newly refurbished website. So I did. Pretty solid content across the board, I'm happy to opine -- but one particular article caught my eye, tickled my fancy, and squatted in my brain long enough to recommend it here.Basically, a bunch of the Premiere writers were asked to come up with their picks for Most Overrated Film of All Time -- and while most of the sacred cows slaughtered here are pretty darn obvious ones, the opinions and explanations as to why each film was chosen, well, I thought they were fairly compelling. Frankly, I'm thrilled to see someone call Field of Dreams "just too on the nose," because it absolutely is.
Fully prepared for the onslaught of How Dare YE!! hate mail, the Premiere posse has wisely decided to add an equally pithy rebuttal in defense of each movie. So when someone has the audacity to impugn The Wizard of Oz, we sane people have a defender who'll say Dude, Please. I've placed the 20 titles under the jump, just to help spark discussion, but do not let that stop you from reading through the whole article. It might make you think a little differently about some of those Unquestioned Classics that everyone's afraid to admit they don't really dig. (Yep, 2001: A Space Odyssey is overrated; I said it and I'm proud.)
Premiere's Top 20 Most Overrated Films of All Time
- American Beauty
- Chicago
- Clerks.
- Fantasia
- Field of Dreams
- Chariots of Fire
- Good Will Hunting
- Forrest Gump
- Jules and Jim
- A Beautiful Mind
- Monster's Ball
- Moonstruck
- Mystic River
- Nashville
- The Wizard of Oz
- An American in Paris
- Easy Rider
- The Red Shoes
- 2001: A Space Odyssey
- Gone with the Wind
(Thoughts to contemplate while writing a Cinematical comment: How could they call MOVIE X overrated?!!?! They're retarded people! How could they NOT include MOVIE Y in this list??!?! It's, like, so completely overrated!)
[Thanks to Dentler for the Premiere tip.]

MOVIE X = A Beautiful Mind, 2001, Clerks and American Beauty
MOVIE Y = Titanic, Officer and a Gentleman, Gladiator and (I am gonna catch hell for these two) Beaches and Return of the Jedi.

Overrated? For once I agree with all but two or three. Some you have to have been there to have appreciated how groundbreaking the filmmaking was though time has moved on. I attended an editing seminar recently and everyone from college students to aging industry pros still talked about how important a film Easy Rider remains to this day.

After running this past my people, I speak for all of the Late-Night Newsmonkeys when I say that Premiere Magazine is vastly overrated.
That said, I agree with A Beautiful Mind and Field Of Dreams. 2001: A Space Odyssey, Forrest Gump and Fantasia should not be on that list.
I haven't yet seen Monster's Ball, but anything with Christina Ricci in it can not be overrated. Merely underappreciated.

So glad to see Mystic River in there, I thought it was pretty weak. And Clerks, of course.
And I guess keep in mind that 'overrated' doesn't mean 'bad'. It just means not as great as everyone says. I like quite a few of these a lot, like Good Will Hunting, but I could see where it might not be all that much better than say Maid in Manhattan, just an enjoyable movie but not great.

To be honest, I agree with almost every movie on this
list. The thing is, certain films become default masterpieces - they're mentioned as great over and over again, and it becomes almost habit; people don't even bother questioning it. 2001 is a movie that needs to be looked at again, because honestly, it's a pretty pompous pile of crap in parts (especially that long final sequence which is the hokiest load of pseudo-philosophical moviemaking perhaps in history; jivey new-age comic mysticism has seldom been so befuddlingly over-praised). And don't even get me started about American Beauty - without Spacey's brilliant performance, the movie is little more than a shrill, self-important soap opera packed with pat dualities.

Pat Dualities - didn't he star in....??
Actually I tended to side with the Premiere authors on this one. I think the key argument that was made in presenting this list is that movies that tend to define a generation also lose their meaning for subsequent generations is spot on. That said, movies that are less tied to one specific time, group or even starring actor/actress tend to transcend generations much more easily. Ditto well written films that are story driven and less effects (or message) driven live much longer too. Virtually every big budget epic on this list tends to play under that banner and is far too short on what really carries a film in the first place - a compelling story.

I love Billy Wilder, Jack Lemmon and even Tony Curtis, but "Some Like It Hot" is just insufferable!!!
Also, I'm hoping maybe I'll see what the fuss what about when I watch it in HD, so maybe it's unfair for me to rank "Lawrence of Arabia" up there.
Most of all, though, there's a certain 1977 SF/fantasy movie (and its prequels/sequels) that I've always found fantastically overrated, but I'll keep it at that.

What is LateNightNewsmonkeys?
And who rates Premiere high?
Does anyone with any credibility respect Premiere.
So it can be OVERRATED.
Oh and Christina Ricci wasn't in MONSTER BALL.
***anything with Christina Ricci in it can not be overrated. Merely underappreciated.***
The Monkeys must not have seen PUMPKIN and CURSED and PROZAC NATION, etc.
Anywhoo
This articles so lame. So inconsistent
what is OVERRATED? A film of great acclaim...?
7 of these 20 flicks Won a Best Picture Oscar
Another 7 were nominated and lost.
So there’s 14 of 20.
Then why not call it the most overrated films nominated for best Picture
I'll help em...
Say, add CRASH, BRAVEHEART, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL and SCENT OF A WOMAN and DRIVING MISS DAISY and a twentieth title you’re choice________
(how about WEST SIDE STORY)
BANG! there’s twenty, there’s your article.
But then they had those six left over.
JULES AND JIM, okay, not a fan, not a Truffut (spell?) guy.
BUT the film had an major impact on (why not put a Godard in there too).
2001. Again not my favorite, maybe not even as overrated as CLOCKWORK OPANGE, but so many people were inspired by it and many would call it the greatest Sci Fi flick ever made (do people think FOREST GUMP is the greatest retard flick ever?).
And CLERKS. Who overrates that? Other then dopey fanboys, but they probably think DOGMA was important and... well, etc.
GONE WITH THE WIND, WIZARD OF OZ, personally I think they are great, but hey, if someone doesn’t like them - fine. But OVERRATED? The impact on film they’ve had (why not CITIZEN KANE and BIRTH OF A NATION and WINGS and THE GODFATHER?). Yeah I hated A BEAUTIFUL MIND and FIELD OF DREAMS and GUMP and CHICAGO etc. But lets see how they last the test of time. Will anyone other then the Howard/Crowe family who can name some films pre STAR WARS have A BEAUTIFUL MIND in their all time top 20? I doubt it.
Why not go after some of the biggies that may merit the title...
CASABLANCA, MIDNIGHT COWBOY, STAGECOACH, THE DEER HUNTER, MULLHOLAND FALLS, REAR WINDOW, THE SEVENTH SEAL, THE SEVEN SAMURAI, how about SHORT CUTS instead of the brilliant NASHVILLE (bet they never even saw it) ADAM’S RIBS, PHILADELPHIA STORY, NETWORK and instead of CLERKS (terrible movie, who overrated it? Another chow for the geeks) SIN CITY. The Work of Bergman and Fellenni and Antonoioni and Wanders etc, go after the serious stuff.Sean

How is a great film overrated? (Gone with the Wind. Soon in a few years The Lion King, Little Mermaid, and all those classics will be "overrated".
Just because the majority like a particular film doesn't make it overrated it says there's good actors, directors, and all that. It's nice to see a good film.

Oh, I so agree. American Beauty is a snoozer. The Wizard of Oz is boring. Forrest Gump? Please. Easy Rider totally sucks, and I ride a Harley. I never listen to critics. Every time they say a movie is good...it isn't. Titanic is another one. I couldn't wait to see it. What a load.

Duck soup has to be the worst movie in the world to make a top list of great movies of any sort or kind.
While not a movie,SOUTH PARK must be the most dumb stupid and stinky show I have ever tried to see.
I have seen little kids that can draw better.
No wonder this nation is so $#%$# up.

Gone With The Wind belongs farther up the list. It's too soapy and too long.
