Ninja Turtles Snags Patrick Stewart (and Others)
Filed under: Action, Casting, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels
If you want your geek movie to do well, there are a handful of major stars it would be very much in your best interest to cast. Kevin Munroe, director of the upcoming cinematic revamp of theTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, is of course quite aware of this fact, and like all good CGI film directors, he's out to fill his flick with major Hollywood stars as voice talent -- but voice talent, it seems, with a geeked-up background. Here's the run-down on what we've learned this week:- Patrick Stewart. Geek credentials -- Living legend. Captain Picard of Trek fame, and Professor X of X-Men fame. They don't come bigger than this dude in the geek world. Stewart will be Max Winters, a "tech industrialist who is amassing an army of monsters in the city."
- Sarah Michelle Gellar. Geek credentials -- television geek queen, as the star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Gellar is the voice of April, who is a "researcher" in this film, instead of a news host. She's also the resident den mother for the turtle boys.
- Chris Evans. Geek credentials -- just building the resume, but off to a very strong start as the Human Torch from Fantastic Four. Evans is Casey Jones, the crazy guy with the hockey stick.
- Kevin Smith. Geek credentials -- creator of Jay and Silent Bob, and high-profile comic book fan. Smith's just got himself a small part as a small time chef.
- Zhang Ziyi. Geek credentials -- all sorts of wire-fu, including House of Flying Daggers and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Ziyi provides the voice for lead villain Karai, leader of an army of Foot Ninjas.

TMNT will be more of a "kid" flick than a "geek" movie.
A very poorly-written story...what a ridiculous take on some potentially interesting entertainment information.
Mark Beall. Geek credentials - writing this story.

This movie was a big subject of conversation Christmas
night at my daughter and son in-laws home.
He and his buddies are huge Ninja Turtle fans and are
looking forward to this movie. I hope it's good so
they won't be disappointed.

I agree that the original voice actors should be used as the Ninja Turtles themselves -- either from the films or the TV series. Let's not forget Brian Tochi or Cam Clark.

How is this movie a "geek movie" anyway? A handful of major stars? Where? I didn't read about any. Yes, Rose, we wouldn't want to disappoint your GROWN son-in-law and his childish friends with a stupid movie. What is the big buzz anyway...there were already 3 live-action movies. They are only making this because, like with all other toys and trends of past generations, they bring back the popular items, but they are hardly ever as popular as they once were.

RE: #8
Nunya, you're making some assumptions-that Roses' GROWN son, and his friends are child-like, that the movie will be stupid, and that it's any of your business in the first place!
As it's none of my business, it seems like it's Nunya "your" Bidness", either.
Just thought I'd return the compliment for Rose.
And as for geek-speak, how does "Byte-Me" work for you.

I think this movie is going to be really interesting.
Also, they're going to have a villain in it,who never appeared in the other movies.I've seen an online
preview and it seems to have good CGI,too.

I'm just dissapointed it's in CGI. I loved the live action turtles movies(even if the puppets got a bit cheesy after a while). They felt almost real watching them as a kid and with the the massive wave of CGI on crack movies, I think the studios are letting what could be a good comeback franchise in live action, waste away in animation. Hopefully it will turn out to be good, but with ms zero personality sarah michelle gellar playing april, god help us all.

Ummmmm I think I saw this movie when I was 12! So they are making a remake of a cartoon of a remake of a cartoon? Didn't it have 3 sequels and a Vanilla Ice rap too? Or maybe I've just made up parts of my childhood
