Spike Lee Feels Good for James Brown
Filed under: Drama, Music & Musicals, Deals, Paramount, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand
Only a couple days after his death, the wheels in Hollywood were turning and Spike Lee has been brought on to direct a biopic based on the life of James Brown. Now, it's important to keep in mind that this project has been in development for quite some time -- Jezz and John Henry Butterworth recently turned in a rewrite of Steve Baigelman's original draft, and all three have either met with Brown before he passed away or spent time with his "people." I do feel, however, that they could have waited -- I don't know -- a bit longer than 48 hours to announce the decision. Ya know, that would have been the "normal" thing to do, I suppose.
Nevertheless, Lee will once again team up with Paramount and Imagine Entertainment (who have already tapped the man to direct a feature based on the L.A. Riots, as well as a sequel to Inside Man) and are looking to swing into production sometime during the latter part of 2007. Seeing as the L.A. Riots pic is the main priority, that will come first and will either be followed by Inside Man 2 (I really hope they don't call it that) or the Brown biopic. Since I assume Paramount will want to deliver the Brown biopic will a little bow around it that reads 'Oscar Potential," it's pretty safe to say it will debut in the fall or late summer of 2008.
Spike Lee directing a biopic based on a legendary performer? What do you think about that? Oh, and who do they get to play James Brown?

Unless people get the image of Eddie Murphy from SNL stuck in their heads or the James Brown-like character he plays so fabulously in 'Dream Girls', I can't think of anyone better who can do the moves and the grooves like Eddie.

As long as it's not Will Smith, I'm OK with it.

Spike Lee directed films about the real-life "Malcolm X" and the fictional performer Bleek Gilliam in "Mo' Better Blues". I think he'd be great to direct this project.
Eddie Murphy, handsdown.

I think the movie will be great, just like Malcom X, Crooklyn.... basically everything Spike Lee makes is great. I honestly think that Bobbi Brown should play James Brown. He can look the most like him,he can dance, and he can sing. Leon I dont think will fit the part. Eddie will make it more of a comedy no matter how serious the role is. So Bobbie Brown should play the role, he has acted before.

Hey Spike What's up? I am the photographger shot the cover of Jet of Spike Lee.
I believe the only one who could really play the role would be Cuba Gooding Jr. Look at his face, look at his acting skills, plus he is a great dancer. James Brown was a boxer first, did you see Cuba in Shadow Boxer? I love Usher but he can not act, and Eddie would take the drama and make it a funny movie.
Cuba's father can sing. I bet Cuba Jr. has also acquired some of those skills also.
Think about it. Valerie Goodloe Staff Photographert Jet/Ebony

I think that Eddie Murphy would be wrong for the role. I feel that Mekhi Phifer needs a chance to shine and show off his acting abilities. Murphy would be wrong for a number of reasons. I have thought long about this with my wife and we believe that Phifer, actually resemble James Brown more than any of the other candidates. Don't believe me, check out ER and some of Phifer's flicks. I'm not saying that he looks just like JB, but as far as his build and facial expressions, Mekhi could make the easiest transition into the young and older James Brown look. Plus the dude can act.
Besides Eddie Murphy is too high profile and I think that it would take away from the role. Secondly, I remember Eddie Murphy doing James Brown parodies in his stand - up act, as well as on old episodes of SNL. I think that it would be hard for movie goers to take him seriously, when they can recall the hilarious James Brown "Get in the Hot Tub" spoof. It may actually draw snickers and laughter where it shouldn't be.
Phifer worked with Spike Lee in the film "Clockers" so there may already be a previous working relationship there. From what I can remember, there was a time when Spike and Eddie didn't get along. Although they are probably cool now, I think that Lee may actually have a better relationship with Charlie Murphy, who has appeared in numerous Spike Lee Joints.
Lastly, there is the age difference. Phifer is much younger, and it may be easier to show James Brown aging with a 30 something actor, as opposed to a 40 something actor such as Murphy. I believe if Spike Lee cast Phifer as the God Father of Soul, then we might be looking at another Oscar Winning biopic.
