Box Office Prediction: The Impossible 'Dream'?
Filed under: Box Office, Hold the 'Fone, Box Office Predictions
Hey all. Quickie prediction today, because there's really only one movie opening wide this weekend. But what a movie it is!
'Dreamgirls': "I'm your dreeaaaamgirl, dreamgirls will never leave you ..." Oh, sorry. I love musicals. I am not ashamed. And if you share that love, you know that these days, movie musicals only come along once in a blue moon. Unbelievably, it took 25 years to bring the Tony-winning Broadway show to the big screen -- but sometimes, things are worth the wait. Directed by Bill Condon, who wrote the film adaptation of 'Chicago' (he also directed 'Gods and Monsters' and 'Kinsey'), this version of 'Dreamgirls' stars Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose (who won a Tony award for the play 'Caroline, or Change') as the Dreams; Jamie Foxx as the group's manager, Curtis; and Eddie Murphy as fading R&B singer James "Thunder" Early.
OK, so much for the formalities. I'm not going to delve into the politics of why Beyoncé was nominated for a best actresss Golden Globe and Jennifer Hudson was nominated for supporting actress, when Hudson is the one who truly dominates the screen. Let's focus on the facts. The fact is, as Effie, the original lead singer of the Dreams who's shunted aside in favor of the more telegenic Deena (Beyoncé), Hudson makes one of the most spectacular film debuts in recent history. Every moment she's on the screen is riveting. Her passionate version of 'And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going,' already made legendary by Jennifer Holliday in the original stage show, deserves all the kudos it's getting; even if you don't like musicals, the number will have your jaw on the floor. Murphy, too, reminds us that he can actually act -- and sing -- giving his best performance in years (yes, better than 'Shrek'). And Beyoncé? Not too shabby herself, especially when she sings the original song 'Listen,' which she co-wrote.
And now on to the important question: Will it be No. 1 at the box office this weekend? Obviously, DreamWorks is counting on people other than musical-lovers to make 'Dreamgirls' a hit. It happened with 'Chicago,' and it can certainly happen here, seeing as how the movie's gotten more buzz than almost any other film this holiday season. As of yesterday it had already earned more than $19 million, which is astonishing considering it only expanded -- from three theaters to 852 -- on Christmas Day. (It doesn't truly go wide until later in January.) Still, that's ... only 852 theaters, whereas 'Night at the Museum,' which had boffo returns last weekend, is playing on 3,685 screens. And let's not forget that 'Pursuit of Happyness' is still going strong. Well, 'Borat' made it to No. 1 in a small number of theaters. Can 'Dreamgirls' do the same?
That's for the box office to decide, and for us to guess. To read about last week's top five, click here. Now go ahead, take a whack at it, folks; should be an interesting weekend.
NEW DEADLINE: Saturday at noon Eastern. You heard right. So get those picks in, pronto. And Happy New Year, everybody!
1. Night at the Museum
2. Dreamgirls
3. The Pursuit of Happyness
4. Rocky Balboa
5. The Good Shepherd

Dreamgirls is the best movie I have ever seen!!!!!!! It takes the cake beyond any movie. I reccomend this movie for everyone to see. Jennifer Hudson's performance is outstanding. She deserves an oscar for sure. The movie leaves you wanting for more, and actually wanting to be a dreamgirl yourself. Its a shame that in my city you can only see it in 3 movie theatre's. But its worth the drive and the money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw it twice this week and I would go a third time. The audience both days was as diverse as you could possibly have and Both times there was standing and applauding at different points in the movie.
Jennifer Hudson steals the movie with both her performance and singing.

I saw Dreamgirls on opening night and it was just incredible. The theater was packed from one end to the other. I went to the movies around 7pm and the earliest show I could catch was the 11:15 pm show. After almost every signing segments people would applaud. Jennifer Hudson was GREAT! Plus she can sing her butt off. Sorry Beyonce you my girl and all, but, Jennifer can sing and sounds better than u. I also think Jennifer should get the Golden Globe for best actress.

I saw "Dream Girls" on Saturday. I totally agree with the reviews. If if were not for the role of "Effie", I don't think the movie would have been as good. Not to take away from the other performances, it does take all to make it successful. But, Jennifer's role was excelent. Why is she nominated for "Best Supporting" I'm going again his weekend.

I had the pleasure of seeing Dreamgirls tonight and I am still breathless. I simply can not wait to see it again. Jennifer Hudson was absolutely remarkable as Effie and Beyonce did a fine job as Deena. All in all, I would say this is the best movie I've seen in a number of years. Jennifer's rendition of And I'm telling you I'm not going - will leave you in tears. It brings the house down - literally. Not since the Color Purple have I heard applause of this type in the theater. Go ahead Jennifer get your Golden Globe and Oscar shouldn't be far behind!

Greetings David:
I'm assuming this is David Dorsey, the multi-talented baritone and gifted actor. Your comments on the film were quite passionate. In addition to Ms. Hudson's performance, your generous kudos wouldn't have anything to do with a love for things "Motown" would they?

i loved this movie I like the fact that effie was so natrual. there was no forced acting the music was 4 stars all the way. I also liked how deena was not the main focal ponit of the movie , everyone had the time to shine a must see.I give it a 9 on a 1-10 scale!

Dreamgirls was well produced and riveting. I was truly impressed with the talent that was displayed by Jennifer Hudson. Jennifer's rendition of the song, "And I'm Tellin' You" literally had me in tears. She put so much emotion and power in the delivery of the song. Dreamgirls is truly #1 at the box office this week.. I was shocked and pleasantly pleased to see and hear a new/different side of Eddie Murphy. Again, there is no way that you can leave that movie and not have tears and rejoice in the outcome for Effie and her "family". It was interesting to see Curtis wake up to the reality of Effie's "weight gain".

I originally saw "Dreamgirls" on Broadway in 1983 w/Jennifer Holliday, Loretta Devine (who, by the way, was in this movie as well) and Sheryl Lee Ralph. There is nothing like the live version on Broadway. But, I do have to say, that this movie version was just as good as the play. I give this movie a 10 on a scale of 1-10. I also agree with others, Jennifer Hudson needs to win Best Actress. Beyonce was ok but does not deserve best actress. And the singing!!!! I have to say that Jennifer Hudson outdid Jennifer Holiday on this one. I am planning to go and see it again next week.

My predictions:
1) Night at the Museum
2) Dreamgirls
3) The Pursuit of Happyness
4) Rocky Balboa
5) The Good Shepherd
Give Night at the Museum time to cool off and then in the first weekend of the new year, I'm predicting a Dreamgirls win. Night at the Museum should attract kiddies for one more weekend due to winter break, so it should easily take the top. Dreamgirls, in only 852 theaters, should still draw a big crowd, but maybe even bigger when those who see it know tell those about the film during New Year's Eve or New Year's Day parties or gatherings! The Pursuit of Happyness will still be strong along with Rocky Balboa, while The Good Shepherd could be the only film to take a dip in the top 5 this weekend.

I love this move! the only thing i dont like is how the public is so focused on jennifer hudon's performance and overlook anika noni rose. she is clearly very undersated. her role is my favorite and the passion between her and eddie murphy steals the movie in my opinion. I think that Night in the museum may reamian number one beacuse it is in almost 4 times the theaters that Dreamgrils is in. However I am going to see Dreamgirls again tonight for a second time and I suggest that everybody else see it too.

dreamgirls was the most sensational movie since titanic. i have a six sence about movies even before i go to see them. i don't even go to the movies unless i have a good feeling about it. jennifer deserves an oscar. to be a new actress, she's unbeleivable. this is what happens when you fight for what you want. the best black talent since color purple. whoever disagrees is crazy.
