Coming to a Screen Near You: Naked Boys Singing!
Filed under: Music & Musicals, DIY/Filmmaking, Newsstand
A movie that will be pretty much the exact same thing as the touring musical is on the way, promising an extremely thin plot that is exactly what the title suggests: Naked Boys Singing! The musical features songs like "The Bliss of a Bris" and "Gratuitous Nudity", and has been touring in cities around the world since 1998. In fact, in New York City, it's the 10th Longest Running Off-Broadway Show ever. (Whose job is it to keep a list of these things? Someone must be doing it, tirelessly.)The show has also had a fair share of controversy, having been shut down in Georgia, Massachusetts, Wisconsin and branded as "adult entertainment," although most view the shutdowns as attacks on the gay community and not against the play itself. Basically this is The Full Monty, except stripped (pun intended) of a plot, and replete with songs and nakedness. It's not like people wouldn't be informed of that fact, having most likely at least read the title of the musical, or seen what's printed on their tickets.
At any rate, this will probably be a blip on the radar when it comes out, and then move at the speed of Pauly Shore to DVD. But if you've been waiting for a movie all about male nudity and nothing else, then you can soon end your vigil and treat yourself to a trip to the movies. Hopefully you live near an arthouse theater.

Ignore the moron in the first comment. I saw this show years ago in San Francisco and it was a pretty mixed crowd (there were a bunch of sixty year old women sitting in front of us that loved the show). The show is quite charming, clever and harmless.

Call me old-fashioned, but I feel like it would really make some money if they did it just like they're doing it now, only with a different gender.

Ignorance really must be bliss. Just becaue old women show up to see the play doesn't mean it wasn't designed for gay men. If you don't understand that then you don't understand Broadway, Playgirl and a lot of other forms of entertainment that regularly play across divergent demographics. One thing I can not stand is someone commenting in ignorance, and thinking they are not. You are the moron for not knowing that a dick play is. The term "dick play" is similar to the concept of "chitterlin' circuit" which is what is used by African American to describe gospel plays that Lionsgate became fond of with movies like Diary of a Mad Black Woman. Both types of plays have been around for years. In this case, there are a whole lot of plays that are just mostly about the naked men. This isn't the only one out there. On a personal note, I don't care that you don't know this. To call someone else a moron because you don't know shit like this just comes across as ignorance.

The above is why I've stopped reading comments -- people overreacting too much.

Dear, dear akaison: Thank you for expanding on your initially pity comment. I was not reacting to your categorizing the genre of the play -- I was reacting to the "It's for us gays to oogle at the dick" portion of the comment. As you pointed out, many genres appeal to a wide variety of audiences, so why leave the uninformed with the impression that "dick" plays offer that and that only? It smacks of a level of stereotyping of gay men that I find intolerable (much like my stereotyping of you as a moron based on a two sentence comment and your attack of my response based on a three sentence comment). I wasn't very pleased with the tone of the original news post either. Oh and I know exactly who this play was designed for and was happy it had been able to break out of, what some would view, its very narrow appeal and have a wider audience. And yes, there are times when ignorance is bliss. You should try it sometime and skip posting comments. :)"
