Val Kilmer Wants To Make A Sequel To Real Genius
Filed under: Comedy, Casting, RumorMonger, Remakes and Sequels
Every once in a while you come across a bit of movie news that makes you think, "They're kidding, right"? Well, this is one of those times. According to a report on Virgin.net, Val Kilmer has signed on to make the sequel to the 1985 comedy Real Genius. If you haven't seen it, then I can't really say you are missing anything. The story follows a freewheeling genius (Kilmer) and his uptight sidekick who get duped into creating a weapon for the government by none other than '80s villainous staple, William Atherton. The whole thing plays like a time capsule, and I really don't remember the '80s as being quite that lame, but the proof is all there on film. Kilmer claimed that he signed on to revive his character from the first film in hopes of broadening his career horizons to include more comedy roles. Kilmer has a flair for comedy, as he proved in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and even Top Secret (a personal guilty pleasure), but was the world really crying out for a sequel to this particular flick?
There aren't many details on the production yet, and a shooting schedule hasn't even been announced. You have to wonder if maybe Kilmer is trying to drum up a little publicity for himself ... either that or the salad dressing idea isn't selling like he thought it would.

Careful there. Many people LOVE Real Genius. I personally find it to be one of the greatest 80s comedies. Some of the best one liners come from this film and are often quoted in my family and friends.
If the script was right, I would love to see a sequel.

Yeah...watch it indeed. REAL GENIUS is required viewing for 80's comedies! One of my all time faves without a doubt!

No joke! Real Genius is amazing with it's witty script.
Mitch: You know, um, something strange happened to me this morning...
Chris Knight: Was it a dream where you see yourself standing in sort of sun-god robes on a pyramid with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?
Mitch: No...
Chris Knight: Why am I the only one who has that dream?

I can't think of a way to make me take Jessica Barnes' opinions about movies less seriously than to trash this perfect 80's comedy.
What's next, Godfather 2 had bad direction and Empire was the worst Star Wars film?

Before seeing Kiss Kiss Bang Bang I would've balked at this, because I thought Kilmer's funny gland had been removed for good. But Val showed he can still get comedy done, so maybe it's not such a bad idea. And Real Genius IS a great movie, so there.

SWEET!
Real Genuis is my in my "Must see 80's Movies" (along with Remo Williams, Big Trouble in Little China and Buckaroo Banzai)
It would be interesting to see how they do it, maybe Chris has moved down to the steam tunnels.

'Real Genius' was right in my wheelhouse, as I was in college when the film came out. No, we didn't have a world-class science branch (my college is mostly known for its music and film schools), but in my first semester there, during dead week, in my dorms, someone had a meltdown just like "Ick" did. We reacted in the same fashion as you see on film. (Neal Isreal, you thief.)
If this sequel is anything resembling successful, it'll be because Kilmer brings the smarm again. Hardcore. Making Chris Knight humble in his older years would be disastrous.

As much as I love this movie, I would only be interested in seeing it if they can coax uber-cutie Michelle Myrinck out of retirement to reprise her role as Jordan.

Loved the movie then; Love the movie now; And best of all my teenagers think it's a classic too. Kilmer was amazingly funny and the script classicaly quotable!

Wow, trashing the wittiest comedy of the 80? The dialogue in Real Genius eclipses most films ever made.
"Because if I wear it anywhere else it chafes."
"It's a laser beam, bozo!"
"Up the voltage."
"there are a lot of really good decaffenated brands that taste jut like the real thing."
"can you hammer a six inch spike through a 2 by 4 with your penis?"
"This. this is ken. this is what happens when people become too sexually frustrated."
"Rue the day? Who talks like that?"
"Chris, I want to see more of you around the lab."
"all right, i'll gain weight."
"I'll file this under H for toy."
"How could a guy that big fit in your clothes? He's twice your size, Mitch."
honestly, if you don't like real genius, then:
A: you have zero respect for quick dialogue
B: how could you like kiss kiss, bang bang?

Wow, talk about a straight-to-video release.
Me, I'm still waiting for my promised Making the Grade sequel. When will we finally see Eddie and Palmer return in Tourista?

Anyone who doesn't find humor and/or 80's pop-culture value in "Real Genius" is obviously not a real genius. I've been quoting Real Genius for the better part of 2 decades. Who can forget "It's a moral imperative." or "Everything here is in alphabetical order, like this is under "H" for "toy."" It's a gold mine, baby. I take offense to any opinion that states differently. "Do you think that's a launch problem, or a design flaw?"

I'm in total agreement about Real Genius! I fell in love with Val in that movie and although I'm skeptical about a sequel this far out from the original, I'd probably see it anyway. And Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was a comedy?? I wasn't laughing, but boy do I when I watch Real Genius.

This 47 year old female withher Master degree thinks that "Real Genius" is the #1 Val Kilmer movie of all time. Anyone who doesn't like it, must have a problem understanding all that suttle humor. How about a ride down the water slide???

My friends and I STILL make references to things being 'a moral imperative', so I don't want to hear it. It's a fantastic movie!

Personally, I think a sequel to real genius would be a hit, there are plenty of people out there that love that movie, and there are those who are influenced by the people who say it is bogus and never give it a chance! I personally am a fan, and it seems whenever I quote a line, I get the famous blank stare. If I was to so much as hint at quoting something like Anchorman or Borat, some borderline amusing film, the room would erupt in laughter. Don't get me wrong, those are both good movies, I enjoyed them, but I just wish people would enjoy a little more original humor, rather than the fake ridiculous stuff.

Real Genius has a great following. You sould rethink your comments and restate that a sequel is in order now that we do not have any real script writers or directors who can produce comedies that would earn money. File your comment for this movie under H for toy.....

I agree with most opinions on the comedic value of Real Genius. Right in there with The Sure Thing of that decade. With all of the quotes being referenced, where's one of my favorites? "In the immortal words of Socrates, I drank what??"
