Stephen King's The Mist Has a Start Date
I posted about the film version of Stephen King's The Mist back in October, and now, according to Fangoria.com, the film now has a production date, and teams have been chosen to handle both the practical and digital effects necessary to bring this classic King creature feature to life. On February 20 director Frank Darabont will be going to work behind the camera, with star Thomas Jane going to work in front of it. Jane will play David Drayton, a resident of a small town engulfed by an unnatural mist which conceals all manner of dangerous monsters. The film is tentatively slated for a November 21 release. It's been several years since I read the novella (and if I'm remembering this incorrectly, someone please post a comment to set me straight), but as I recall the monstrosities in The Mist were largely unseen, with King describing a tentacle or leg belonging to some fearsome creature, but rarely describing the beasts as a whole. This would seem to open up a world of possibilities for the folks of KNB FX who will be creating the film's practical effects, with KNB's Greg Nicotero also serving as the film's Second Unit Director. Nicotero worked in a similar capacity on George Romero's Land of the Dead, and he has makeup and effects credits on such diverse films as Spider-man 3, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Bubba Ho-tep and Evil Dead 2, to name but a few. Digital effects will be handled by the staff of Café FX under the supervision of Everett Burrell. Café FX's work can also be seen in Pan's Labyrinth and Sin City.

As I recall, a large portion of the story revolves around a group of townsfolk (a.k.a. potential victims) barricaded inside a grocery store, whilst the "mist" obscures all but a foot or two of the outside world. You are right on with the monsters being revealed only as the occasional tenticle, probing for weaknesses in the refugee's defences and lying in wait for those courageous (or foolhearty) enough to venture out into the open. It'll be interesting to see how such a murky, dark and mysterious environment is portrayed in film as compared to the picture Mr. King was able to draw in my mind.

I think, and I may be mistaken because I haven't read the story in a long time, but only one monsters was fully revealed. After the mist moves in and the people in the grocery store barricade themselves in, a kind of flying bug creature breaks through the front glass. That was the only seen creature as far as I know. All in all, I am extremely excited to finally see this being made into a series. I would rather see it made as a TV series (mainly to see what happens after the end of the story), but a movie will be good.

You're fairly close. Almost all the action takes place inside the grocery store. There is a giant tentacle which kills one person, and the flying bugs. But the main monsters in the story are these giant spiders that pull people into the mist. Their webs eat right through peoples' skin. At least I think they're spiders-it's been a couple years since I've read it, too.

There's also a really huge, I mean HUGE dinosaur thing they encounter at the end, after escaping the store. But they may not keep that.
