Another Peek at New Look Transformers
Filed under: Action, Fandom, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Images
Well guys, it has become a semi-weekly ritual these days, but today provides us with one of the more interesting installments. Yes, it is time to drag out some new images of the "updated" Transformers look courtesy of Michael Bay and company. Today's images come to us from the ever-present IESB, and are, in fact, the covers of a Transformers sticker book and a Transformers movie novel. They feature two of the characters we've seen the most of -- Bumblebee and Optimus Prime -- in full glory, striking action poses like champions. The shots are a bit grainy and color-weak, but they certainly convey the style of the new Transformers look.I need your help, fans. I continue to be particularly unimpressed with the look I've seen from the new flick, and I find myself entirely unable to divorce any notions of the film from my already pre-disposed negative opinions of Michael Bay. I'm certain this has tainted any objectivity I should have towards the film, and I find myself unable to think about it objectively. But I want to look forward to this film -- I desperately want to get behind the idea of a renovated Transformers. So if you've got any positive angles, pitch them to me. I'm all ears.

I think I stand with you in regards to this movie, each new piece of information regarding 'The Transformers' is disheartening, to say the least. They're 'refreshed' appearance says volumes to the thousands of dedicated fans of this 20 year old property - "screw your two dimensional 80's afternoon nerd fantasy, Hollywood will show you how it's really done!" Studios have yet to figure out that if your going to mine for content in pop culture's past, serve it to us raw and unfiltered. Authentic and just the way we remembered it (or envisioned it), not filtered through some fresh-from-college-photoshop-jockey willing to do anything for a cheap seat at VFX company. Peter Jackson (LOTR) and Mel Gibson (POTC) seem to get that 'authenticity' sells! (and don't try the Peter Cullen excuse, cause he wasn't in the running until fans got word). Why bother? Just call it 'Morpho-Bots' or 'Techno-cars' and dodge a few expectation bullets.
Now for the only positive spin I can think of regarding this movie. I think Transformers may suck so hard, that scorned 3D artists might re-animate and re-edit the movie just to prove Michael Bay wrong. Even better, create a open source DIY movie just to fulfill fan expectation. Some of the fake test shots prove that people are capable of such tasks. Let's hope this will be a landmark moment for empowered DIY filmmaking and hardcore fans.
Soundwave as a Zune? You betcha!

I'm with you, Mark. I just can't get my head around this movie.
I know what they were GOING FOR was extra-terrestrial self-aware transforming robots that could really exist in the real world. After all, they're going for the MI:III popcorn crowd (note that the TF teaser trailer was the first one in the MI:III DVD.) The majority of the grown-up movie-goers don't go to animated films, no matter how great they are.
The problem is that extra-terrestrial self-aware transforming robots don't really WORK in the real world. The TF concept really belongs in an animated world, where the robots can look a little less "realistic". The old-school TFs were better because of their simple, easy-to-digest character designs. I don't see myself (or anyone else) making an emotional connection with a character, when I can't find their HEAD in a photo (see Bumblebee on today's book cover).
You know what this movie reminds me of? Stealth.
Did anyone care about that movie? Any emotional connection at all with the characters? I haven't found anyone yet.

Unfortunately, I'm with you guys....I don't want to be, I want the NEW Transformers to be as spectacular to me as the old-school transformers. Heck, I even watch the current(Transformers:Cybertron) transformers on TV and it is one of my best shows. I look at the new design transformers and hope that this movie is not another X:3 failure. Where they got most of the names right, they didn't really do a good job of allowing each character(besides Wolverine) to be as brillant as they are in the comic books. The magic of our imaginations or animated cartoons will probably not be transferable to screen till these Michael Bay's and what's-his-name that made X-Men 3 get away from making these types of pictures, and some new blood with more respect for authenticity are allowed to make future movies. It's not all bad though, I thought Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Spawn and Daredevil were more true to their roots and showed that this kind of movie can be made. I feel that each bad movie brings us closer(before I die please) to movies as spectacular as the comic books we read when we were kids.
