Speak No Evil, Numero Uno: Jeffrey Sebelia
Filed under: Awards, Hold the 'Fone, Speak No Evil by Jeffrey Sebelia
[Ed. note: We're thrilled that up-and-coming designer -- and the latest 'Project Runway' winner -- Jeffrey Sebelia has agreed to guest blog for us about awards-season fashion. In his inaugural post, Jeffrey relates his first-hand experiences of Golden Globes night, with Heidi Klum (natch!) and hubby Seal, and his take on the fashion statements of the evening. If you follow 'Runway,' you won't be surprised to discover that Jeffrey wasn't impressed ... but let him tell you himself. And please welcome him to the world of blogging. -AA]
Two weeks ago I was asked to make a tuxedo suit for Seal to wear to the Golden Globes, and as excited as I was it was a little bit of a freak out. The man was nominated for an award, and wanted to represent me while he was there. What an honor. So I set to designing this beautiful suit, and really began to try and picture what the whole event would look like. What would be the trends for this season? Who was going to stand out, and what possibly was going to influence fashion? Was it going to be something like J-Lo's rear end? Was some starlet going to wear a completely backless number letting us all think that maybe we could get away with the same thing? Were we going to see pailletes, sparkles, diamonds, glitz, money, fabulousness and dreams? And was I going to help Seal stand out and be classic, push the envelope a little, and still feel comfortable in this fish-bowl environment? The most important thing I realized for each of the stars was this ... know yourself, and know yourself well. Know what doesn't look good on you and DON'T WEAR THAT THING!
An hour before the show I was at Seal (and Heidi's ) house along with a whole group of friends and co-workers ... hair stylist, assistant, nanny, the whole thing; and at one point Heidi addressed the room and said something that I know was being echoed all through Hollywood that day. She said "the last thing we want is to end up on anyone's worst dressed list ... or to end up on When bad things happen to good people" Hear, hear!!!!! And that sparked off a conversation about who might end up in that category tonite, and what that might look like. Was it going to be someone's ass just hanging all out of their dress, or was it going to be an otherwise austere leading man donning a clown-like suit for want of being a little too independent.
Well I have to say the experience before the show was a lot more fun and excitng than the actual show ... and I also have to say I think that the Golden Globes' best dressed man and woman were right there in front of me the whole time. I felt that as a couple, Heidi and Seal looked better than anyone else that evening.
The trends were boring as hell ... not just the fact that there was a lot of white (because I actually loved the idea) but because noone did anything with it. There was no accessorizing. There was very little variation in silhouette, and my summary of the general picture looks like this: A veritable sea of white, Grecian, underpinned, ruched contrivances. Cautious and self-conscious ... under-accessorised, watered down to death, no sparkle, no glitz, nothing to inspire ... a big pile of boring.
I think Chloe Sevigny and Reese Witherspoon looked the best ... that is to say they really came as themselves and looked beautiful doing so. I think Cameron Diaz BLEW IT! Sienna Miller and Heidi Klum were stunning and creative, America needs more America ... and Beyonce Knowles did a great job going dressed as (and posing as) Jessica Rabbit.
For the men? Jeremy Irons' speech was the best ... and in a sea of what looked to me like a Pink Floyd video where penguin men march cockishly in circles around one another ... Seal seemed to embody the spirit best. His was the only ensemble that looked like he thought about it for more than a minute, and figured out how to execute. And for the record? it's not the suit I made him ... that is a black deerskin tuxedo that we are still working on. A piece of art that will be unveiled at the next, hopefully more exciting and much more fashion worthy event.

Its a shame the oppurtunity you have been given and you can only focus on Heidi and Seal, the people paying you. Why did seal not wear your tux, it wasn't ready? Guess that means you can't stick to a deadline. Heidi looked awful, awful, awful. Of all the stars there you mentioned like 4, then you talk about someones speach they gave. Whats that have to do with fashion? Why don't you do something meaningful with your life instead of having your head up Heidi and Seals ass. Showing your true colors and their ugly just like Heidi.

Welcome, Jeffrey, to the world of blogging and congrats on your first post. It's very well written. I didn't know you were a writer as well. In fashion, like writing, the greatest fear and prime motivator must be: please don't let me embarass myself. Thanks for the insight and the education.

I think PRsucks is being a total asshole. You don't have to be jealous at all. Heidi is hot as hell no matter what she wears and Seal looked great. Um Jeffrey did not focus on Heidi and Seal. Can you read? And I really believe that PR SUCKS!!!!!!!!

If you think Heidi is pretty, your blind. Her make up may give an illusion she is pretty, but she not. Check it out for yourself.

Read the article, he mentioned 7 women, and didnt actually comment on them except Reese looking good in Yellow, and he mentioned 2 maile. One being Seal, and 1 woman being Heidi, and we can all see how far up Heidi and Seals ass he is. He didn't even mention anyone but Seal and Heidi until paragraph 5. Yes i read the article did you? Or are you trying to get a date with Jeffery.
Heidi is very unattractive, and her dress was hideous. As a 'designer' you should have stopped her from walking out the house in such a horrible dress. Guess money will buy you lies too. Keep selling out Jeffery

And, again, PRsucks proves to be an asshole. Listen carefully, please: He wrote about Seal and Heidi because the blog entry was about the clothes he made for SEAL AND HEIDI. Even you should be able to figure that out. Heidi got to be a world-famous supermodel by being homely. Yeah, right. One quite possibly PhotoShopped pic proves it. Get a life.

ROFL-Since when is Sebella a "celebrity designer"??? And then to rant about how his paying customers looked the best? Dude, WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING? You didnt even finish his suit on time (Shades of Jay McCarroll and Heidi's Emmy dress?)
Tell me, Mr. Sebella==Is there any rehab institute for self promoting game show winning snobs?

OK, PR, it's obvious you have no education and all you know is what you learned on the street. If you expect people to take you seriously, get a clue. Jeffrey is one of the most talented designers through his hard work and honesty, and would not sell out. Since I've know him since he was a little boy, I am qualified to say that.

I AGREE WITH PR SUCKS, THIS KID SPENT THE WHOLE TIME KISSING HEIDI AND SEALS ASS. ACTUALLY I THINK HEIDI AND SEAL PAID HIM TO WRITE THIS BLOG, ACTUALLY SEAL DID APPEAR AS SOME BLACK ADONIS LOOKING VERY FIT AND VERY GOOD LOOKING IN HIS VERSION OF A TUX. WELL ACTUALLY JUST HEIDI. BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS SHE LOOKED A HORRIBLE MESS AND HER HAIR LOOKED LIKE SOME 5 SEC BUN ID THROW IN MY HAIR AFTER TENNIS PRACTICE AND HER CHOKER DID INDEED LOOK AS THOUGH IT WAS CHOKING THE LIFE OUT OF HER, THE DISASTER OF A DRESS SHE HAD ON LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE JUST TOOK A SPOOL OF FABRIC AND DRAPED IT ON HER. IT WAS NOT A FLATTERING DRESS AT ALL. AND WHEN DOES CHLOE SEVIGN EVER!!!! LOOK GOOD???!!! IF ITS NOT HER ATROCITIES SHE CALLS DRESS, THEN ITS HER...ACTUALLY ITS HER WHOLE LOOK. SHE NEEDS A STYLIST IN THE WORST WAY BECAUSE SHE DEFINITELY NEEDS TO RETHINK HER IMAGE. I AGREE REESE WAS A VISION OF BEAUTY, THE BRIGHTNESS OF THAT YELLOW SHE WORE ACCENTUATED EVERY POSITIVE FEATURE THAT WOMAN HAS, SHE LOOKED AS IF SHE WERE KISSED BY THE SUN. ALSO, I AGREE BEYONCE WAS A BIT OVER THE TOP. IN AN EFFORT THE INVOKE OLD SCHOOL, GLAMOUR OR SULTRY SIREN IMAGE, SHE LOOKED LIKE A GLITTERY HIGH PRICE CALL GIRL. ID BE AMISS IF I DIDNT COMMENT ON JENNIFER HUDSON'S IT WAS TOO MUCH. CLOSE UP PHOTOS OF HER REMINDED ME OF DRAG QUEEN BECAUSE SHE HAD ON ENTIRELY TOO MUCH MAKEUP, TOO MUCH HAIR AND HER EYEBROWS WERE ARCHED OUT OF THIS WORLD! OVERALL THE RED CARPET WAS COMPLETE WITH A BUNCH OF HITS AND MISSES AND SOME OUT RIGHT FATALITIES (I.E. CAMERON DIAZ)!

Funny and true about Beyonce. Reese was stunning! I liked Cameron's gown! Ugly Betty was gorgeous. Vanessa Williams apparently didn't look in the mirror. Didn't like Heidi, she looked the same as always. Sandra Oh looked great. Noone hit a triple home run. I loved Jeremy Irons being different.

I thought Reese looked the best and I thought Seal was definitely one of the best dressed. I didn't care for Heidi's dress but loved Sharon Stone and JLo's and Emily Blunt, who put even JLo's butt to shame.

Jeffrey...I loved that you won PR,'cause I love your work. I agreed with what you said about Seal and Heidi; they looked classic and edgy and sexy all at once.
Oh, and btw: the Jessica Rabbit comment was so right, it made me spit coffee on my keyboard. She looked like a Vegas hooker.

Heidi looked awful first of all---her jewelry was far too large and overwhelmed her whole look....and that dress was a mess---shapeless and really unflattering. She did not look anything like the glamazon/supermodel she is! I was SO underwhelmed by her, and I adore the woman. Those hideous gloves were an atrocity and have unfortunately caused her to end up on her most feared Worst Dressed List (along with the mess that was her up-do of a hair style). Poor girl, maybe next time, she'll stick to what she, and Michael Kors know best---classic style, and not try to push the envelope in so MANY different ways all at once.

I think Jeffrey is so right on about how boring and under accesorized all the actresses were. I think Reese Witherspoon really looked like a ray of sunshine in yellow. I loved the way Seal looked also. He did'nt look like he rented a tux. He was rock and roll and the fit was great.

everyone always talks about the "famous" and "it" people instead of the people who actually looked good! did anyone notice how forest whitaker's wife keisha had the most stunning of the white dresses (http://tv.yahoo.com/the-64th-annual-golden-globe-awards/show/40075/photos/1)? so simple, elegant and understated.
another person i thought looked fabulous was jada pinkett-smith (http://tv.yahoo.com/the-64th-annual-golden-globe-awards/show/40075/photos/1). mr. and mrs. smith always look glamorous and comfortable. jada's fitted, tiered dress was very flattering on her, and the color was a dream--how many women could get away with it? that woman definitely knows what looks best on her, and her dress was a refreshing departure from the current trend of grecian concoctions. grecian dresses are *so* 2005! :)

Come on dont diss Heidi guys. You do know she just had a baby 2 months ago. Way better than I looked a year after mine, much less 2 Months. I think you were on target except for Sienna Miller. I thought her gair was disturbing and last minute. It ruined her whole look.
