Superman Returns Sequel to Feature More Bad Guys and More Action?

Bryan Singer's film Superman Returns is now out there among all the other versions and incarnations of the "Man of Steel." Whatever your feelings are about the movie's quality and even though, to some, it may have underperformed at the box office, there will be a sequel ... and Singer will be directing it. In addition, it seems the writers from the first film, Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, will most likely be involved as well.Since a lot of you Supes fans were a little let down by the first film (myself included), what will the writers and Singer be doing to make sure the next Superman better lives up to fan's expectations? Well, according to a recent interview with Superman Returns co-writer Michael Dougherty over at Sci-Fi Wire, the new film might have more than one bad guy and will almost certainly be much more action-packed. Dougherty hinted that the sequel will feature at least one villain from the DC Comics franchise and maybe even more than one. "Maybe It's [Mr.] Myxyzptlk," joked Dougherty in the article.
Dougherty also indicated that it's likely he and co-writer Dan Harris will return for the sequel. He notes, "We're talking. We're bouncing ideas around with Bryan. Big ideas. Action-packed ideas." He also agrees with Singer's intentions to go all "Wrath of Kahn" with the next film. According to Dougherty, that means: "Let's take what we've already established -- we've gotten that out of the way -- and let's just make it shorter, tighter and more action-packed." Sounds good to me. I like The Wrath of Kahn movie and I like the Superman character, so the sequel could be a winner -- I just hope they can pull it off.
What villains do you guys want to see in the next Superman film?

Metallo and/or Bizzaro (sp?) would be awesome. Though I think it will be Brainiac/Luthor.

I for one would like Superman to act like a super MAN and not all emo while wearing too much makeup. Routh's got the look and seems to fit the role nicely, but they made him way too metrosexual in the last film.
As for villains, I think Luthor's run his course and they need to start from scratch...but I'm no Supes comics expert :)

The idea of having more than one villain is great I just hope its Brainiac.

That's what got me about this movie, Superman has been established for what over 40 years? What did they have to establish other than he was away and came back and Lex got out of jail, then on with the fun :)
cheers
Dave.

A comic book nerd/ geek such as myself could not help but answer this post...
I'd love to see Darkseid or maybe even Brainiac, someone really menacing. The problem with Superman is that he's the kind of superhero that doesn't really find anything difficult, with the exception of the kryptonite thing, which is just god damned boring!
I want to see Superman fighting someone who he knows he can't win against. And that the only way he could win is if he loses on purpose...

I, for one, absolutely loved the first film, though I can't really put my finger on exactly why. Everyone always complains that there wasn't enough action in it, but I didn't really notice that. But any changes that Singer and the screenwriters make between the last film and the sequel will only be positive ones, I'm sure.
As for villains, I think Brainiac will definitely be one (especially since he always came up in the other, failed incarnations of the first film), and Lex Luthor would probably be the other one. Not the main villain, though, just sort of an annoyance.

Why does every superhero movie have to increase the number of villains per sequel? It gets increasingly ridiculous and nonsensical and I'd rather them tell a GOOD story than promise action and nothing else.

Mmm. Taste that homophobia! Let it linger on your tongue!
(Seriously? That's your only complaint? There are better things to criticize, like, oh, say, the massive miscasting of Kate Bosworth as Lois Lane?)

Bizarro world would be both funny and interesting!!! It could be created (as at one point, he did) by Lex Luthor.
Also Mister Mxyztplk could be involved, like providing the idea and technology to Lex Luthor.
I agree with Lester Martinez (post #3), almost everything is too easy for Superman, but these "bad guys" (Mister Mxyztplk and Bizarro Superman) are extravagant and interesting foes for him. At least, that's what I think anyway :-)

Bizarro would be awesome. Somehow Luthor and Brainiac team up and create Bizarro. Or it could go Luthor and Brainiac in part 2 and have Bizarro in part 3 as kind of a continuation of part 2. I don't know. Heh, personally, I always thought it would be fun to have Lobo show up and have them fight it out.

In general, I'd like to see Supes have to use his brain a little bit more. I was struck by how much he relied on sheer brawn in the new movie.
Brainiac would be great for that.

Hi Chris. I follow your comments with interest. Actually the composite Superman would be an excellent choice for the next installment, alluding to the Legion of Superheroes. Considering the overlapping of the Batman mythos and the trend to bring new DC characters to the forefront this would be a wonderful challenge for a creative team. At the same time, in the golden age the Parasite was a favorite or more current the use of Doomsday might be in line with the trend to throw the book at character franchises. ex Jean Grey going Dark Phoenix in the 3rd installment of the xmen saga. I noted that my daughter felt that Brandon Routh was a wonderful choice but the addition of the cgi was weakly applied. Xmen was a convoluted mix but the special effects were fun; although they did fail to move the story forward in most cases. It almost was like they did the effects for the sake of showing that they could. In the books and graphic novels, in most cases, the images actually serve to move the ideals forward. I hope, without the time pressure from the first movie, they make the effort to take it to the next level as promised.

The first movie blew because the writer ignored that SUPERMAN and KRYPTONITE don't mix.
Fix that and any Superman movie would be better.

How about Luthor captures Supermans son and is able to somehow adapt the boys powers to his use, maybe control the boy as the bad guy. Like they did in TV move Kung-fu , where Brandon Lee play Cains son, and is control by an evil guy to kill his dad
Just a thought
Cheers

If I could have my way this how the sequel would go...
Rudy Jones, a janitor at some tech company (Star Labs, maybe?). Luthor talks Rudy into stealing some chemical, Rudy has to use some nano technology suit to steal it, during the get away chemical spills on the suit - nanos short out (nano suit somehow used to absorb the radiation from the chemical?). Rudy becomes the Parasite. (a slightly updated origin).
Parasite runs amok, absorbing the energy and knowledge of whoever he touches. Superman tries to stop Parasite, Parasite absorbs Superman's energy, Superman is in a weakened state. Parasite then hides Superman, so he can occasionally feed from his power (Like in the Batman/Superman Adventures).
Parasite also starts preying on the people of the city. Parasite can't be stopped, not by the police or national guard.
Luthor talks to the government, saying that he could build something that could stop the Parasite. Lex gets his funding for Lex Corp, and starts building kryptonite powered robots.
Somehow Superman finally breaks free, battles Parasite while Lex's robots are sent in. Battle ensues. Superman overcomes Parasite, the robots turn on Superman. Superman destroys robots and the Lex Corp part that was manufacturing the robots. Lex tells the government that Superman destroyed all the robots and plans. In the end you see an updated version of the robots and it is Metallo.
I wrote this in a hurry so it might make too much sense, but you get the general idea.
This is what i would like to see for the second movie.

Whatever they do, I hope they take the focus off of Luthor. They've made 5 Superman movies now and he's been in all but one of them. Is that really necessary? Imagine if we had received 5 Batman movies all with the Joker. It's nuts.

I think it's too soon for Doomsday, but I would love for them to make "The Death of Superman." I think that movie would bring droves of viewers.
What about General Zod and company? They were fun :)

First and foremost, no more Luthor appearances! I thought the Superman Returns was okay but it's time to stop fawning over the original Superman movies and start doing new, original things with this franchise. That said, I'd like to see Metallo, Brainiac, and Darkseid (but not all in the same movie-they should buck the trend of cramming in too many villains in the same movie). Bizarro would be a very bad idea-no one would take him seriously.

If there going dark, it would probably be Darkseid or Doomsday. Brainiac would be cool too. Just as long as it isn't Superman vs the super team of K-PAX, Kumar and an island of Kyptonite again!
