James McAvoy Playing Scottie in Trek XI?
Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Casting, RumorMonger, Fandom, Remakes and Sequels
Oh, those Brits and their rumors. Apparently, the Star Trek XI script is completed and official casting announcements should be heading our way soon ... but, that's not stopping people from tossing names into the rumor pile. For months we've been talking about the roles of a young Kirk and Spock (Britain's Sunday Mail seems to think Matt Damon has already been awarded the role of Kirk, but we all know that's far from an accurate statement), and now folks are shoving James McAvoy's name into the "Who will play a young Scottie?" rumor pile.
Yes, supposedly Paramount wants a Scot in the role (which I completely understand), and who better than everyone's favorite up-and-coming Scottish actor, James McAvoy? Most folks in the US will know McAvoy as Mr. Tumnus from The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, although he's appeared in a number of other films including Penelope, Starter for Ten and, most recently, The Last King of Scotland. Personally, I dig the choice and think McAvoy would make for a great Scottie. And, even though this is just a wild rumor right now, you have to imagine Paramount would place him high up on the list -- I mean, the dude is Scottish.
On the other hand, the whole Matt Damon thing bothers me to no end. In a perfect world, Singer J.J. Abrams and Co. will cast unknowns in the main roles and sprinkle more familiar names throughout the cast in smaller parts. What do you think about McAvoy as Scottie? The right choice? The wrong choice? Feel free to throw out some other names ...

Since when does being Scottish have anything to do with playing Scottie? James Doohan was born in Canada! His parents were Irish!

The perfect Scotty: Paul McGillion, currently starring in "Stargate: Atlantis".

ACK! Sorry for the Singer typo, I'm still jet-lagged after flying home from London last night and my brain is still coming together.

I'd rather see Gerard Butler in the role. Although I think he's going to be subjected to jokes about inadvertently blurting out "THIS...IS...SPARTA!" every where he goes now.
Now, if he could only do that line with Shatner's cadence...

As the son of James Doohan, I think they should let me take on that role. After all, I do look like him.

Now watch some twit write up an article about how ridiculous that would be.
I think you deserve just as much of a shot as anyone else...more so considering you are the actual son of the great James Doohan! It would be ridiculous if you didn't at least get an audition.

Paul McGillion (http://imdb.com/name/nm0569295/) would be the perfect choice for the role. He's Scot-born himself, currently portraying the Scottish character Carson Beckett on Stargate Atlantis. Being a Scot himself, he'd bring something special to the role, including a fantastic Scot accent. McGillion has my vote all the way.

I'm hoping from some classic CAPTAIN Kirk and the crew of the USS Enterprise big screen fun. That means non-teenage stars. Paul McGillion was BORN to play the role of Scotty!!!! He's perfect! He's got the talent, the looks and the accent! Not to mention 3 years on a Scifi show on Stargate Atlantis, so he can sprout the technobabble too!!!
PAUL McG FOR SCOTTY!!!

I think Paul McGillion would be great for the role, he's a Scot, has been in a sci-fi role with Stargate Atlantis, has looks, character and charm that goes hand in hand with Scotty...ideal I would say

I'm also in favor of Paul McGillion for the role of Scotty. Born in Scotland and raised in Canada I think he would be perfect for the role and since his character of Carson Beckett was recently killed off in Stargate Atlantis I hope he definitely gets to audition for the part.

I have to admit that I love James McAvoy, but I just can't see him as Scotty in Star Trek. Someone who has the look of anxiety I always associate with Scotty down to a tee is Paul McGillion. His Scottish accent is very good, and although he was brought up in Canada, he is a Scot. He would be simply perfect.
