Ben Affleck Talks About the 'Hollowness of Fame'
Filed under: Action, Drama, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, Newsstand
If there is such a thing as a "Hollywood martyr" then Marilyn Monroe is probably the patron saint. She was the ultimate in cautionary tales about the destructive side of fame, but it doesn't always have to end so tragically. Ben Affleck's engagement to Jennifer Lopez and the gossip whirlwind that was "Bennifer" was an example of what happens when the gossip machine looks for fresh meat, and the results weren't pretty -- although, they might have been asking for it after that video. Now, that was brutal.Affleck has begun to pull himself from the wreckage and is building credibility as an actor again for his work in Hollywoodland and Smokin' Aces. He'll also be making his directing debut with Gone, Baby, Gone. Affleck is steering clear of the high profile celebrity life and seems happier because of it. A profile from The New York Times Syndicate has Affleck musing on his brush with A-list fame: "Nothing is inside doing those things. It doesn't matter. I had to learn that by having my family that's what really matters. I'm lucky I was able to see the hollowness of fame, but I got pretty dinged up over the years." It looks like Affleck might have learned his lesson about keeping his private life out of his professional life, but Lopez certainly hasn't; since she stars opposite husband Marc Anthony in the upcoming biopic of singer Hector Lavoe (El Cantante) -- some people never learn.

Research your facts, movie genius blogger. Lopez hasn't learned her lesson? Are you kidding me? Jennifer and Marc were attached to El Cantante waaay before they got together. In fact, she was with Affleck at the time. Puchi, Hector Lavoe's wife, personally asked Jen to play her in the movie, right before she passed away. Lopez asked Marc to star in this the first time she got the script, 6 or so years ago. Why the hell does she have to back out on her word to Puchi and Marc just b/c Gigli didn't work out. She's a professional. You'd never know that b/c your head is way to deep inside Affleck's ass!

I agree with comment #1, she shouldn't pull out of work commitments because some ponsy writers can't see beyond the fact they a couple work together, working together doesn't mean you are not private, what do you have to say for Jessica Lange and Sam Shepherd or directors who work with their spouses? or is the disdain for such things only leveled at those who make the weekly tabloids, entertainment shows or your weekly gossip entries on Cinematical? Lopez and Anthony successfully kept their private lives away from the spotlight since their wedding until a few months ago when they started following Tom Cruise everywhere. They've been focused on their work (as musicians and actors), there is nothing wrong with working together.

i agree with the 2 first comment i don't think it's a problem for El cantante that the 2 leading role are played by Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony because they're not an over exposed couple. And Ben Affleckhave been complaining about his Bennifer days for 3 years it's so annoying.

Jessica, you need to get some facts straight. Affleck and Jennifer Lopez signed on for "Gigli" before they even knew one another; the "private life" came later. "Gigli" had a lousy script: Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson wouldn't have turned it into a hit. Ben was equally responsible for Bennifer, but 3 years later he's still stuck in the past, looking for sympathy, bringing up Lopez, as well as answering questions about his former fiancee. She doesn't talk about him anymore, and if the press brings him up, she's learned how to handle them. Jen and Marc Anthony look very happy and clearly enjoy working together. They maintain a low profile most of the time, so the public really doesn't know what makes their relationship tick, & we don't need to. I agree with the opinions expressed in posts #1, 2, and 4.

Wow...Lot's of J-Lo/Marc Anthony fans here. I'll have to agree with Jessica that J-Lo has not learned her lesson. I don't care if Hector Lavoe himself came back from the dead and asked her to make this film because J-Lo just kills films. When was the last time she had a hit? I can name only one and that's "Out of Sight". That's it. Everything else she touched turned into a hunka shit. And that's being nice. As for Marc Anthony what fuckin movie did he ever star in that became a hit? Exactly...a big goose egg. As for keeping their life private...well poster #2 just said it all..."a few months ago when they (J-Lo/Marc Anthony) started following Tom Cruise everywhere." Yeah sounds real fuckin private to me. Look I'm not ragging on all the J-Lo/Marc Anthony fans out there because like them I also have my vices but let's get real for a moment weren't you all skeptical when you saw the trailer for El Cantante? I mean was your first thought, "Hey it's J-Lo and Marc Anthony doing a film together. What a great idea." Or were you like me and the rest of the audience who saw that trailer and thought, "Great another drinking game in the making."? Come on tell the truth.

"TIFF Update: Picturehouse Lands El Cantante"
Posted Sep 15th 2006 7:02PM - by Erik Davis
Filed under: Drama, Deals, Distribution, Focus Features, The Weinstein Co., Newsstand, Toronto International Film Festival
Calling it the "most sought-after film of the Toronto International Film Festival," the Hollywood Reporter tells us Picturehouse has snatched up all North American rights to El Cantante (aka that JLo-Marc Anthony flick). Completing the deal at 5:30am this morning (which means everyone was either drunk or just woke up way too early) and paying just under $6 million, Picturehouse beat out a slew of other distributors including Miramax, Focus Features and The Weinstein Co.
Pic, which stars the real-life husband and wife duo (who also play husband and wife in the film), tells the true story of Hector Lovoe, a man who began the salsa movement back in 1975 and subsequently brought the sexy dance to the United States. Currently, Picturehouse plans to release the film next summer on roughly 500-700 screens, before going wide with it. Word on the street says Lopez is outstanding in the pic and may even deserve an Oscar or a Golden Globe for her performance. I'm not sure I would go that far, but it does up my interest in the film.

Editor/Webmaster, Hairy Knuckles, and Jessica Barnes (author of article):
SOMEONE Re-moved Hairy Knuckles' Comments, originally labeled #6 and originally dated 1-29-07, Altered it by Deletion, then RE-dated and RE-submitted his on Jan 31, 2007 to become the #7 posting.
WHO did this ?? HOW? WHY?
I wish to correct this to reflect the TRUTH : that My First Post here was #5, Hairy K's was really #6, AND that My Second Post was #7.
HAIRY Knuckles ended his post thus: "Come on tell the truth".
I CAN'T THINK OF A BETTER PLACE TO START ! :
Is it that someone's unable to Counter my Reply, after I took the time to research and respond, or mentally lazy, or willing to "Win" at any cost?
Someone's not only dissin' this newcomer (me), they'rre not even respecting Cinematical's veteran bloggers whose Article I cited in my 1/29 reply to H.K.
I guess my side "wins" by default.

Madeline,
No one has deleted/reposted/altered the comment from Hairy Knuckles. On the backend, I can see every comment, deleted or not, from every poster to Cinematical. Hairy Knuckles has one comment attached to this post, and it's not been moved or altered at all. Occasionally, readers submit comments twice (or more) not realizing they have to approve their comment by responding to the email that they are sent, and then duplicate comments from one reader get through.
You had duplicate comments in the system twice, and the dupes were deleted, which may be why you're seeing the "#" order as changed. The timestamps of the submitted comments haven't been altered at all, and at any rate, it's against our editorial policy to delete comments unless they are duplicates, obscene, or attacking a writer or another reader.

Kim,
In writing my second post, I first addressed Hairy Knuckles : "To Whom It May Concern (including Hairy Knuckles)." The only way I knew of him was because his was the 6th posting, and then I followed.
After the sequence changed, I appeared to have two consecutive posts, and the purpose of my second one, what it was responding to, seemed pointless, unclear at best.
I'm sorry about duplicate posting. I have Parkinson's, with a tremor similar to that of Michael J. Fox. Sometimes "it" seems to be Boss and I have to wait my turn, lol.
THANKS for taking time to reply!
Sincerely,
madeline :)

Glad he has figured it all out, how to deal with fame. I admire him a lot if he really succeeds in being himself all the way. The fame thing, always being looked at, always having your picture taken, every word you say written down, that must be a strain. Suddenly earning a lot of money would make anybody go a bit crazy, buying things you don’t need just because you finally can, having a feast. But he has come over that point quickly, and is moving on. Garner seems to be a real help in that direction. She is not a silly empty minded superficial star, she is a strong woman, understanding, forgiving and happy. In that way she has ‘broad shoulders’ too. She is the best. They are the best.

I don’t know if this is the right place to post this comment, reaching Ben Affleck via the internet is like throwing a bottle message in the water… But I forgot to say that I believe that he could move even better and faster forward in his life by doing Transcendental Meditation, TM. It would really improve his quality of life, and I sense that he is a very restless man, so that alone indicates that TM could be very useful to him. I know David Lynch, whom is very successful, does TM. So, Ben keep your mind open and try it, it might just work for you too.
