Now that the Oscar nominations are out, my friends and I have been debating which film we think will win best picture. Granted, it's a tough race this year with no clear front-runner, but my early gut instincts are going with Little Miss Sunshine. While Sunshine failed to take home a Golden Globe, the PGA (Producers Guild of America) named it this year's best film last weekend and, last night, SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awarded Sunshine with its top film honor, best motion picture cast.
While the Oscars are the most popular, the SAG awards are the most personal ... especially for the actors, as it is those actors who vote for their favorite performances of the year. With Little Miss Sunshine being the exception, the rest of the film awards mimicked those handed out at the Golden Globes earlier this month. Best Actor went to Forest Whitaker for The Last King of Scotland, Best Actress went to Helen Mirren for The Queen, Best Supporting Actor went to Eddie Murphy for Dreamgirls and Jennifer Hudson rounded things out with Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Dreamgirls.
I think it's pretty safe to say we won't be too surprised when the acting awards are given out at this year's Oscar ceremony -- the only one who I don't see being a lock at this point is Eddie Murphy, though chances are pretty great that he'll win. So, that leaves best picture. Will it be Little Miss Sunshine? Or, with all its cursing and violence, will The Departed take it? The Queen? Eh. Babel? Nah. Letters from Iwo Jima? No way.
