Angry Parent Wants Gore's Inconvenient Truth Out Of Schools
Filed under: Documentary, Celebrities and Controversy, Newsstand, Cinematical Indie
Al Gore still has work to do; he has yet to convince everyone that global warming is scientific fact and not just liberal lore. An Inconvenient Truth was the cause of a recent controversy in a suburban Washington school that drew great attention in the community at large, and specifically within filmmaker and activist circles. Here's what happened, in a nutshell: a science teacher in the Federal Way School District was set to show the Oscar-nominated documentary in class, when an angry parent's email put an end to all that.
Although there hasn't been much scientific rebuttal to Gore's documentary, there's still a portion of the population that does not believe that global warming is scientific fact. Like the parent in question, Frosty E. Hardison. (Frosty? Oh, they can't be serious!?) Not only do they believe that there is no truth behind this whole global warming thing, but that it is also relatable to the second coming of Christ -- this was in the email, and due to America's constitutional principle that declares the separation of church and state, Mr. Hardison's outrage shouldn't have been given such a quick result in his favor.
Instead of the email being controversial, the film was deemed controversial, and a discussion was immediately brought before the school board. Do they or do they not show the film? What they decided -- per the parent's request -- is the following approval checklist:
- The teacher must receive written permission from all parents for their children to see the film.
- The film materials must be approved by the principal and the school board.
- Students must be shown an opposing view giving the kids "two sides." In this case, that would be the global warming argument.
Has global warming become a scientific dogma that 'non believers' render as belligerent outcries? To some like Mr. Hardison, yes, which just adds more fuel to the Al Gore flame. Al Gore will soon be training over 1,000 individuals in his presentation on global warming so that they may help spread the word throughout the world; major cities and suburbia included.

From now on, all science classes will only watch Finding Nemo.

Seriously though. Science classses have been accused of being liberal and biased for years, but I've yet to see one that didn't bend over backwards to accomadate the "views" of any backward ignoramus who took offense to hard science being taught instead of Christian mysticism that belongs in English Lit.

What pisses me off about this is that school boards are nows so gun-shy that a man like Hardison can make ludicrous claims of bias and the school boards jump into ultra-protective mode. Just once, can't a school board say "um, actually, no, our curriculum is based on, you know, SCIENCE." Seriously, grow a spine.

Seriously? Most scientists rebut his findings. In fact, Al Gore will only do "friendly" interviews where the hosts already agree with his movie.
Thank goodness there is some common sense out there where people don't surrender to this.

Global warming is a scientific fact now??? Are you kidding me??? ROFL ...talking about exposing yourself to too much propaganda from the left crowd. I guess Joseph Goebbels had it right ...If you tell a lie big enough (or in this case, something that has not proven to be true or there is no way of proving it to be true i.e. global warming) and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.

const: right on... i was just about to type a similarly dry / sarcastic response but i noticed your post and it really hit the spot.
in spite of this school controvery (and similarly exxon trying to get the film barred from classrooms) i'm glad to see the issue getting more visibility. let's force lawmakers to step up to the plate and act in the interest of life on this planet. if we can live well in an economically and ecologically sustainable way, then why not?

how apropos -- from current headlines:
Chairman: Bush officials misled public on global warming
"We know that the White House possesses documents that contain evidence of an attempt by senior administration officials to mislead the public by injecting doubt into the science of global warming and minimize the potential danger," Waxman said.

Maybe the the school can teach the kids also about Manbearpig and the Flying Spaghetti Monster as there hasn't been much scientific rebuttal about these either .
And Lane: So shocking that tin foil hat lefty loon Henry Waxman would spin a wild conspiracy about the Bush administration lying in order to further their ultimate goal of destroying our planet...just shocking.

you must be among the 30% of the population i've been so worried about. i wish i could help...

Oh wait....what was I thinking....there hasn't been much scientific rebuttal about Bush lying so he can destroy the world. It can be only be true then.

okay, I'm baffled by some of these comments. What gives you the idea, Const, that most scientists disagree with global warming? Being part of the science community, that's propostrous. The VERY few scientists that disagree that we're having an impact on global warming always get more media attention for being the black sheep, and they usually opt to not have their "research" peer reviewed for journal publication, a cornertone for giving credibility to your research. Other popular sources are people that aren't exactly qualified (Bush seeking global warming advice from fiction author Michael Crichton, or a new book gaining some attentions, "Unstoppable Global Warming Every 1500 Years" co-written by an economist. I mean come on.)
I'm not saying the proponents of one side of the issue is completely right, and the other is completely wrong, that would go against scientific evidence they've each collected (and have interpreted somewhat into their own very educated hypothesis, as addressed in their own section of scientific journals), but the ignorance of most people to this issue is appalling. I could go on, but it probably wouldn't matter.

It's just a movie! And as a student, I tell you it's way more educational than learnig about a magic school bus being swallowed or turning into a spaceship.

Here's an easy alternative: let the angry parent pull his kid out of school the day the rest of his classmates get to see it. I don't see why one fool should spoil everyone else's education.
I also think evolution-deniers should not avail themselves of antibiotics. But that's asking for more consistency and thought than heretofor demonstrated by this bunch. At least the Amish live by their religous convictions.

Our schools should be preparing our students, and future voters, to think critically. Exhibiting a movie with special sound-effects and grave voice-overs is doing nothing to teach this students of the methods of analysis that both sides of the global-warming arguement are using in making their case. If this movie was being used in a larger context in which the science teacher asks of each student to work on a proposal to solve aspects to environmental issues, or to postulate upon the economic effects of things like Kyoto, or maybe address the concerns that some people might have with the entire global warming movement, then this might be a good idea. However, I am afraid that this movie is simply being used as a poor teaching device.
I would also ask that before students are shown movies during science class whether they have a grasp of the basics, like how does the weather work, what is photosynthesis, etc. If they can't answer those questions then the teacher just wasted 90 minutes of their lives. And in a larger sense, folks, that might be what the parent is complaining about.

I think the interesting word is "valid." The implication being that there are invalid documents (or at least one). I find it curious that a follow up from the paper was deemed unnecessary.
That there is no debate is no wonder as one side calls naysayers demeaning names with a knowing nod to their fellow supporters for the insanity of doubting the "truths" of global warming. Common Sense tells us that these "truths" are true.
Here are other things that Common Sense tells us. Scientist are funded by one side or the other with the expectation of a desired result (both sides). Without said desired result, it is unlikely that they will continue to see funding.
We are unable to predict tomorrow's weather pattern, but somehow it is possible to predict a decade into the future.
As computer modelling goes, garbage in/garbage out. I'm sure we all remember how last hurricane season was predicted to be the worst ever due to global warming. No mention I saw from the media on how it ended up being one of the tamest.
