Though we probably should have seen this coming from a mile away -- what with the major delays in casting and the fact that Warner Bros. just bought another Wonder Woman script -- but Joss Whedon has officially stepped off the Wonder Woman project. In a statement released to Whedonesque.com, Whedon says, "I don't think any of us expected it to this time, but it did. Everybody knows how long I was taking, what a struggle that script was, and though I felt good about what I was coming up with, it was never gonna be a simple slam-dunk."
Gee, ya think? I think it's pretty safe to say that no one really wanted a Wonder Woman flick in the first place -- I mean, how could we ever take her and that lasso seriously? Probably the best part of Whedon's entire statement is when he finally puts all those Wonder Woman casting rumors to rest by saying, "But most importantly, I never have to answer THAT question again!!!! And you don't have to link to every rumor site! Finally and forever: I never had an actress picked out, or even a consistent front-runner. I didn't have time to waste on casting when I was so busy air-balling on the script." Ha! So, in the end, the joke was on this.
There were no front-runners, there were no secret casting sessions ... there was nothing. There was just some dude trying to finish a script ... and trying to finish a script ... and trying to finish a script ... and, well, it's about damn time. So, now that Joss is off, is Warners going with this different WW script set during WWII? Will there even be a Wonder Woman movie? And, if there is, who would you pick as an adequate replacement?
Personally, I vote for the garbage can.

More Firefly stuff would be great. Though a WWII WW movie sounds pretty cool. Its always fun to watch Nazis get beaten to hell.

Nobody wanted a Wonder Woman movie? Think again, pal. As long as the script is consistent with the actual character and storyline from the Golden Age DC comics, and as long as the actress chosen for the part is credible in the role, it would be worth not only seeing in the theatre, but also buying on DVD.
Okay, to answer the question of who should play the World War II era Wonder Woman, assuming Warner Bros makes the movie (which I for one would dearly love to see), here are my thoughts.
Rachel Weisz is a good choice (assuming she can fake an American accent, which shouldn't be too difficult). In those 6-inch stilleto boots, she would even be of acceptable stature.
Michelle Monaghan is tied with her for my first choice.
Anne Hathaway comes in next (though she might seem a little younger than some might want for the part).
Eliza Dushku, Charisma Carpenter, or Morena Baccarin might be a good choice.
I will also concede that, for this younger version of Wonder Woman, Katie Holmes *might* actually be a good choice (this is contingent, however, on her ability to be her own person, rather than "Mrs. Tom Cruise" or otherwise dominated by "that fruity little club ..." etc, so that she can make her own decisions about what roles to accept and so on, and so that she isn't another oddball).
Also, although I was (and still am) opposed to her doing the part of the contemporary Wonder Woman (who is more mature), Lindsay Lohan is another possibility for this younger version of Wonder Woman, if she can get her head on straight (and if she actually *wants* to free herself from whatever substance or substances resulted in her being in rehab, and succeeds in doing so).
So, is the other movie (the one Whedon was involved with) going to be made at all? If so, I'm going to have to retract my statement of opposition to Angelina Jolie doing the part; the more I see of her, the less she reminds me of Jon. So put her with Terry Farrell, Salma Hayek, and Catherine Zeta-Jones in my suggestions for the more mature Wonder Woman. I'm also going to toss Elizabeth Hurley in there, as a tentative possibility (the accent, again, is a potential challenge, but she and Rachel Weisz are talented enough that I think they could pull off an American accent with little trouble).

Oh, yeah. Catherine Bell is another good choice for the more mature Wonder Woman, as I've noted previously.

Thrilled beyond belief. Joss can do some fine things, when he has an awesome support staff to direct him in ways he needs. When he is on his own we get crap (see Serenity, Titan AE, etc) and the fact that he was "struggling with the script" for over two years? COME ON. Look at Batman Begins, look at Spiderman. Thats how you make a comic book movie. Go back to the source and translate it properly. WW should have been a slam dunk but Joss had to waive his holy ego over and think he could make it better.

CJ,
Do you honestly believe there is any story left in the 'verse after Serenity?
Let's see how Serenity basically ended the entire Firefly story.
River- We know all about her and the government will no longer be looking for her. (let alone the fact that Joss contradicted most facts about River in
Serenity. Also, what happened to the Hands of Blue?)
Wash- Dead. Without Wash, Zoe becomes just a yes man for Mal. No interesting story there.
Book- Dead. No moral anchor left for the crew.
The alliance is going to have to answer for creating the Reavers and that is just going to lead to unrest or even another civil war (ooooh that sounds a fascinating story that has never been done before)
Serenity took a great story of Firefly and destroyed any future it could have had.

There is no way it could be that hard to develop a storyline for a Wonder Woman movie, reguardless of the time period they use. I would cast Cathrine Zeta Jones as Wonder Woman, she has the look, and I would ask Meryl Streep to play her mother. Any male actor in his late 30's - early 40's could play Steve Trevor. Again, any time period could be used, and maybe with the exception of an Acadamey nod to Meryl, this would not be an Oscar contender.
I would love to see Wonder Woman on the big screen, and I am sure that we are not the only ones out there who feel the same.

****If no one wanted Wonder Woman, she would never have lasted 65 years.
Next time, say what you really mean. That you PERSONALLY did not want a Wonder Woman movie.
You dont speak for the rest of us.

I think setting Wonder Woman in World War II would be a great idea. This is what made the first season of the TV series the best of the three. When it was updated to the 70s and moved to CBS is when it started going downhill. Also, another positive is that Linda Carter was a great Wonder Woman. Like Christopher Reeve and Superman, she became Wonder Woman when she put that costume on.

I hope that silver does not use Whedon's treatment. That would be a disaster. Patching up scripts is bad news. Let Jennison and Stricland write their own script. We waited this long, we can wait longer. Just get it done right. If they patch it up, We will get a very bad movie. I don't want Whedon's treatment. Just what we need is Buffy meets Wonder Woman.Whedon is gone because he was clueless. They have a second chance too get it right.Don't screw it up. P.S Cast Nadia Bjorlin as Diana. Now there's a start.

As far as all of the actresses named that are being considered for the part,Sandra Bullock,Eliza WHOEVER,Angelina Jolie, and Kate Beckinsale to name a few...none are right for this role,As anyone who read the comics and watched the TV show can tell you,Wonder Woman is an AMAZON.The actress who plays her should be tall and athletic as well as beautiful.Lynda Carter was the epitome of the character, and I don't think any of the ladies mentoned can fill her satin tights.
