Woody Allen's Next Unattainable Dream Woman: Penelope Cruz
Filed under: Comedy, Foreign Language, Romance, Casting
If Kevin Bacon connects to almost every actor or actress in history, Woody Allen must, by now, connect to every actress. Over the years he's made films with just about every big-name lady in the world of cinema. Starting with What's New, Pussycat, which had the likes of Ursula Andress, the filmmaker created the most powerful black book of female talent -- Diane Keaton, Mia Farrow, Carrie Fisher, Mary-Louise Parker, Helena Bonham Carter, Mira Sorvino, Helen Hunt and many more. Now, he's officially added Penelope Cruz to his long roster of women. As Allen continues to look off-shore for his cinematic inspiration, it's no wonder that he turned to one of the biggest internationally renowned European actresses. Shortly after buzz started to spin today about Ms. Cruz as Woody Allen's next leading lady, Variety contacted Cruz's agent/manager and confirmed it. Or rather, they've confirmed that she's been asked to keep her summer calendar free. Whether she holds to that, or not, remains to be seen. The movie, which Allen has still not finished writing, is set to film this summer in Barcelona when he temporarily moves there with his family. As of last summer, his plan was to have bi-lingual film where English-speaking actors play roles as foreigners in the city while, in typical Woody fashion, they also get entangled in love. Did anyone ever think Woody = Spanish flavour?

Word in your ear Pene:
1. Granted you've been nominated for an Oscar for Almodovar's most flimsiest movie, it doesn't necessarily mean you should get overeager. We all know that your ability to chew on the English language like you are chewing gravel is a big barrier between you, the film reel and the audience, in that regard you are no Salma Hayek and we all know how English films always end up for you and how painful you are to watch in them, stick to Italian/Spanish films, please, at least, you achieve some sort of acting feats in them.
2. The well went dry on Woody Allen eons ago, he hasn't done much for actresses with 10 times your talent. Let's see, Melinda and Melinda, Anything Else, Curse of the Jaded Scorpion, Scoop, I mean, thank God for Matchpoint but it really isn't vintage Allen, is it? I mean, apart from Scarlett Johansson in Matchpoint, can you name any actress that has done any work of note in an Allen movie in recent times? even Johansson turned out her most mediocre work in Scoop and that's saying something after seeing The Black Dahlia. So, perhaps you should think about it before you jump on the Allen ship. I mean, you are an Oscar nominee now, you want to ruin that so soon? This new would have been great some 10 years ago but now, it causes worry, I mean, let's be honest, you aren't going to be the one to bring Allen back. How many months of rehearsals did you do for Volver to achieve that performance, 3 months was it? you won't get that with Woody.
Think carefully Pene or Sahara 2 will be on offer soon.
