Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller Are Hardy Boys?
Filed under: Action, Comedy, Casting, Deals, RumorMonger, Newsstand, Tom Cruise
Take this with a grain of salt, but TMZ.com is reporting that Ben Stiller's next project will be a comedy with Tom Cruise called The Hardy Men, which would take the popular Hardy Boys detective novels and spin them into a 'Hardy Boys finally grow up' kind of comedy, with a lot of action, presumably. The project will be directed by Shawn Levy, helmer of the mega-successful Night at the Museum. "The Hardy Men is primed to go into production come October, and regardless of whether he takes the gig, Cruise clearly sees comedy as means to redeem both his public persona and the box office crown," says TMZ.
Somehow this makes sense to me -- the notion that Cruise would think comedy is a good next move for him. He's been raked over the coals in the press for taking himself uber-seriously with his religious beliefs and his attacks on psychiatry and what-not. This kind of thing sounds exactly like what some highly-paid consultant would recommend for him. There's nothing in the TMZ report about how this might affect the projects Cruise has already lined up for his near future.

Let's look at this, uh? Tom Cruise hangs on to Dustin Hoffman in "Rain Man" hangs on to Paul Newman in "The Color of Money" and now wants to hang on to Ben Stiller for this film! Hmmm, seems to me that "Tommy Boy" is lucky at this point if he can just "Hang On" PERIOD!! Oh yeah, let's not forget him "hanging" on to Dakota Fanning either in "War of the Worlds"!

Hey Jason, I think you're right with that but, again, like S S B said, I guess he hung onto Cuba Gooding Jr. who took the Academy Award that year. His M. I. films were O.K., at least the first one was, the others puts him in the "Sly Stallone has-been" category with the "Rocky" lifetime movies!

Hmm, I'm actually one of the most ardent Tom Cruise bashers around. However, I have to say that the movies that you all are quoting were promoted and succesful in large part because of Cruise. He wasn't the best actor in any of them (and he certainly rarely is the best actor in any film), but he was the draw. His career is defined by blockbusters, not awards, so in that respect he has been wildly succesful for over 20 years now. The only way to keep others from winning awards in movies that make tons of money with him in it is to stop going to see him. Then another actor can be the main draw in a film that has spectacular performances from established artists.

Ya know, in todays' world, with turmoil in the Middle East and all else that is wrong, history shows that Holloywood was an oasis for escape with the movies that were being shown through those rough times. If viewing a Tom Cruise movie is still considered being an oasis, I'd rather "die of thirst in the desert of depression" than use said movie for relief from todays' problems!

Was, am and ALWAYS will be a Tom Cruise fan. Society continues to like other celebrities despite them having been convicted of CRIMES (like Robert Downey Jr., Winon Ryder and Lil' Kim), but Tom Cruise believing in an unconventional religion - oh my god - that is SO much more taboo (sarcasm intended). Am a big Ben Stiller fan too. I thought Mission Improbable was hillarious. Looking forward to them doing a project together again if this is true.

I think Tom is brilliant - and can certainly funny. He was absolutely hilarious in Interview with a Vampire.
Too bad people expect actors to be nothing more than mindless celebrities - I applaud any actor who has a personality and true interests in life. Who cares whether I agree or not? At least they're "real."

Have you all forgotten "Mission Improbable" from the MTV Movie Awards with Ben Stiller as Tom Cruise's stunt double "Tom Crooze"?? AMAZING. Casting them as brothers isn't a far stretch at all, in fact it's BRILLIANT!!
You can find it on the MI: 2 DVD as a special feature, or check it out here on You Tube
Everybody LOVED Stiller with DeNiro in Meet The Parents/Meet the Fockers... Why NOT with Tom Cruise?? Especially with a Nancy Drew movie aimed at the kids coming out this year!! They can jump on the franchise and own it before someone else grabs it up.
The real question is, will we see any cameos by Shaun Cassidy, Parker Stevenson, or Pamela Sue Martin??

Lets just remember the Tom Cruise shield from War of the Worlds, I think he actually had it in MI3 too. I mean the guy didn't die, but the ENTIRE city did. Now he's going to switch over to comedy. I don't think so. We need to keep comedy funny.

First of all, nobody has the last name "Cruise". Personally, I think he is an arrogant little jerk. And if you notice, back in the days, when he did the famous "underwear dance", his teeth were not so pearly white. I don't blame him for getting caps or whatever. I do take umbrage at his lack of tolerance for other's views on religion or whatever he is spouting about.

Just watched Mission Improbable again at the link above. OMG, I haven't laughed so hard in a while! I love the Cocktail parody and the end where "Crooze" is laughing like Cruise, at the same time. Ben Stiller is a riot, and Cruise's dead pan delivery was the perfect offset.

I would prefer to see the 1970's Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew in a remake (reunion) in preference to Tommy Cruise. Bring back Shaun Cassidy, Parker Stevenson and Pamela Sue Martin. They are all still alive!!
